A worker on a trout farm died from serologically confirmed leptospirosis. Four other workers at the trout farm had recently had an influenza-like illness; one had had jaundice. Initial numbers of bacteria associated with wild (brown trout and pike) and cultured (rainbow trout) freshwater fish as well as with the water in which they were caught were determined. Six triploid individuals were found in a full-sib family of 11 adult rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) from a domesticated hatchery stock. The triploid individuals were normal in size and external appearance, had underdeveloped gonads, and showed no evidence of 3n/2n chimerism or mosaicism. XXY triploids were males, suggesting that the Y chromosome is male determining in trout. Because they may avoid production losses associated with sexual maturation in normal fish, triploid trout and salmon could potentially be useful in fish culture.

For freshwater fish the motile period of sperm is extremely brief, even after a dilution in isotonic media. This result is in contrast to most other animals (ranging from invertebrates to mammals), in which sperm are generally motile for at least several hours. The aims of this experimental study were to develop a practical method of controlling the number of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum procercoids delivered to a fish host; to examine the effect of different procercoid doses (3, 7 and 15) on the plerocercoid level in fish; and to examine the potential mortality caused by plerocercoids. The experiment was terminated after 2 months. The prevalence of infection at the lowest dose level, 17.2%, was statistically significantly lower than at medium and high levels, 63.3% and 56.7%, respectively.
