G.A.T.S. and universities: implications for research.

The likely impact of applying the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) to higher education are examined. GATS aims to "open up" services to competition: no preference can be shown to national or government providers. The consequences for teaching are likely to be that private companies, with degree-awarding powers, would be eligible for the same subsidies as public providers. Appealing to the inadequate recently introduced "benchmark" statements as proof of quality, they would provide a "bare bones" service at lower cost. Public subsidies would go: education being reduced to that mini

Medical Student Enrolment in Canadian Universities.

Statistical returns from the 12 Canadian medical schools revealed in 1962, for the fourth consecutive year, a larger first-year enrolment (946, 970, 1006 and 1057). This is attributed to an increase in qualified applicants and expansion in size of the first-year class in the face of a physician shortage. The proportion of women graduates increased from 5.2% in 1958 to 10.1% in 1962 (U.S.A., 5.6%). The academic calibre of entering students showed little change over five years, 1957-61. Recent impressions indicate an upward swing. Loss from withdrawals and dismissals was chiefly in first year (9

Mumps Outbreaks at Four Universities - Indiana, 2016.

From February to April 2016, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) confirmed mumps outbreaks at four universities (three public and one private). All universities were located within 65 miles of Indianapolis; however, epidemiologic links among outbreaks were limited. ISDH and local health departments investigated the outbreaks and initiated control measures at all universities. A protocol describing recommended testing for mumps, testing priorities during the outbreak, and a preauthorization process for submitting specimens to the ISDH Laboratory (ISDHL) was developed and disseminated …

Driving sustainability in universities through carbon footprint analysis.

This research addresses the critical need to reduce carbon footprints in higher education institutions (HEIs). While many HEIs have adopted sustainability practices and embedded sustainability-related content into their curricula, assessing and mitigating their carbon emissions is equally essential. This study evaluates the sustainability of UCSI University Kuala Lumpur by measuring its total carbon footprint using the GHG Protocol as the framework. Four primary sources of emissions were examined: electricity consumption, water usage, diesel for university-owned transportation, and waste dispo

Prematriculation immunization requirements of American colleges and universities.

The authors surveyed a stratified sample of 880 colleges and universities in the United States to assess the status and characteristics of their prematriculation immunization requirements (PIRs). On the basis of a 90% return (796 responses), they estimated that 55% of US colleges and universities had implemented a PIR at the time of the survey. Among schools with PIRs, measles vaccine was almost universally required, with 74% requiring two doses, mumps vaccine was required by 70%, and rubella vaccine by 92%. Hepatitis B vaccine was rarely required and was usually recommended only for students …

The alcohol problem in universities and the professions.

Over the past few decades the belief has grown that the drinking habits of medical students and doctors are abnormal. The literature on the subject is, however, equivocal. Some studies suggest that medical drinking is not particularly excessive. Others indicate that it is when compared with the general population but not when compared with the drinking rates and patterns of comparable professional groups. Medical student drinking is often analysed without reference to that of other young adult groups and university students. However, the growing concern about medical drinking has stimulated a

Affirmative Action in Brazilian Universities: Evidence From Longitudinal Data.

This paper evaluates the impact of racial and low-income quotas on the academic performance of senior students in Brazilian colleges and universities. Using longitudinal data from Brazil's Higher Education Census and the National Examination of Student Performance (ENADE), and employing a fixed effects approach, the study examines the influence of these quotas on student outcomes. The results show that neither racial nor low-income quotas significantly impact the academic performance of either quota or non-quota students. This finding holds across different groups of majors, indicating that th…

Identifying violence against the LGTBI+ community in Catalan universities.

Social struggles have led to the legal recognition of the rights of LGTBI+ people in some countries. Even so, violence against LGTBI+ people is a social problem throughout the world, and has resulted in the vulnerability and victimization of the members of this group. In Spain, no research has been published to date that analyzes this problem in the university context. Considering the scarcity of studies on the identification of this type of violence in Spain, the main objective of this study was to identify violence against LGBTI+ people in Catalan universities. We administered a battery of q…

Evolutionary game model for public health emergency management in universities.

Public health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, demand effective emergency management within universities, involving collaboration among university departments, students, and Public opinion channel. This study aims to construct and simulate a tripartite evolutionary game model capturing the dynamic strategic interactions of these stakeholders during crises. Utilizing an evolutionary game theory model, the study examines their decision-making behaviors under bounded rationality and incomplete information. Vensim software simulations reveal key findings: (1) moderate government penalties ef…

Drinking at European universities? A review of students' alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: High volumes of alcohol consumption and risky single occasion drinking (RSOD) among university students have been shown to be associated with considerable harm to both those who consume alcohol and their fellow students.
