Hydrosoluble vitamins.

The hydrosoluble vitamins are a group of organic substances that are required by humans in small amounts to prevent disorders of metabolism. Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the biochemical, physiologic and nutritional aspects of the water-soluble vitamins. Deficiency of these particular vitamins, most commonly due to inadequate nutrition, can result in disorders of the nervous system. Many of these disorders have been successfully prevented in developed countries; however, they are still common in developing countries. Of the hydrosoluble vitamins, the nervous system…

Photobiology of vitamins.

This review explores contemporary ideas about the relationship between light exposure and vitamin biology. Nutritional biochemistry has long recognized the relationship between vitamins A and D and light exposure, but in recent years other vitamins have also been implicated in photoresponsive biological mechanisms that influence health, well-being, and even evolutionary processes. Interactions between light and vitamins can modify genotype-phenotype relationships across the life cycle, providing a basis for interesting new explanations relevant to wide aspects of human biology. This review exa…

Vitamins - wrong approaches.

Deficiencies of essential nutrients have been responsible for many epidemic outbreaks of deficiency diseases in the past. Large observational studies point at possible links between nutrition and chronic diseases. Low intake of antioxidant vitamins e. g. have been correlated to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases or cancer. The main results of these studies are indications that an intake below the recommendation could be one of the risk factors for chronic diseases. There was hardly any evidence that amounts above the RDA could be of additional benefit. Since observational studies cannot…

Vitamins as hormones.

Vitamins A and D are the first group of substances that have been reported to exhibit properties of skin hormones, such as organized metabolism, activation, inactivation, and elimination in specialized cells of the tissue, exertion of biological activity, and release in the circulation. Vitamin A and its two important metabolites, retinaldehyde and retinoic acids, are fat-soluble unsaturated isoprenoids necessary for growth, differentiation and maintenance of epithelial tissues, and also for reproduction. In a reversible process, vitamin A is oxidized IN VIVO to give retinaldehyde, which is im…

[Vitamins in pregnancy].

Vitamins are essential for the growth and normal function of human body. There are very few reports on vitamin A deficiency in pregnant women and newborn. Vitamin B complex includes various fractions essential to proper nutrition. The absence of vitamin C results Barlow disease in newborn. Vitamin D, the antirachitic Vitamin, is of great importance in safeguarding the mother and fetus from its relation to calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Vitamin E is also useful for the treatment of toxemia of pregnancy, intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), and neonatal jaundice. Vitamin K is well known …

[History of vitamins].

The history of the discovery of vitamins was initiated by the observation that beriberi is caused by qualitatively poor nutrition rather than by microorganisms. An early theory suggested the formation of toxins by improper cooking, preservation, or storage; however, research soon took another turn. Feeding experiments with standardized food pointed at the existence of 'accessory factors', present in food in small amounts. These factors seemed to be essential for the maintenance of metabolic processes, yet could not be synthesized by the organism. This was the initial spark for a worldwide rese…

[Vitamins and immunity].

Nutritional status conditions immunity in man whom malnutrition is often associated with diminished immunocompetence and increased susceptibility to infection. Among micronutrients, vitamins A, C, E and carotenoids notably have special influence: they provide good cellular and tissular physiological behaviour; they also protect tissues against reactive oxygen species, and enhance immune response.

Vitamins and minerals 4: overview of folate and the B vitamins.

Many studies have suggested that elevated homocysteine levels are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Lower levels of the three water-soluble vitamins--folate (folic acid), vitamin B6 and vitamin B12--are primary determinants of high blood homocysteine levels. In the fourth of an occasional series on vitamins, minerals and supplements, June Thompson looks at the role folate, in particular, may play in reducing homocysteine in the body and in protecting the body from some other diseases.

[Vitamins and skin].

Mucocutaneous changes occur in vitamin deficiency states and may be helpful in clinical diagnosis of the underlying disease. Substitution and therapy with vitamins can also cause skin problems, which may be of allergic of nonallergic origin. The skin and mucosal changes in pellagra and scurvy can be diagnostic; however, in other vitamin deficiencies, skin signs are rather unspecific. In most cases combined vitamin deficiencies occur that result in polymorphic and nonspecific mucocutaneous signs. Vitamin deficiencies are due to malnutrition, malabsorption or genetic defects. In industrialized c…

Vitamins and immunity.

The effects of vitamin deficiencies on increased morbidity and mortality from infectious disease were noted very soon after the discoveries of the vitamins. Repletion and, in numerous instances, supplementation with the deficient vitamin resulted in clinically relevant immunoenhancement. However, communication of the importance of vitamin status, especially in children with measles complications, has not progressed to the point that micronutrient assessment and intervention, when appropriate, occurs on a routine basis.
