Walking indoors, walking outdoors: an fMRI study.

An observation/execution matching system for walking has not been assessed yet. The present fMRI study was aimed at assessing whether, as for object-directed actions, an observation/execution matching system is active for walking and whether the spatial context of walking (open or narrow space) recruits different neural correlates. Two experimental conditions were employed. In the execution condition, while being scanned, participants performed walking on a rolling cylinder located just outside the scanner. The same action was performed also while observing a video presenting either an open sp…

Beyond 'Walk Walk Walk': Barriers and facilitators of physical activity in individuals with claudication.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with claudication have significantly reduced capacity for walking, which leads to worsening prognosis and decline in overall health status. Basic walking advice is usually provided to individuals with claudication during their routine clinic visits, which has very limited efficacy, resulting in little or no change in physical activity behaviour. OBJECTIVE: This study explored barriers and facilitators to physical activity (PA) in individuals with claudication, using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) and the Socioecological Model (SEM) for behavioural diagnosis. METHODS…

Walking beside grief.

Grief is universal, yet very isolating. Every culture has rituals, every family its stories of loss, and every individual their private struggles with absence. Very often, grief is treated as something to be repaired, resolved, replaced, or moved beyond. Yet what the bereaved most need is not solutions, but companionship-someone willing to notice, listen, and stay present. This article reflects on bereavement companionship through stories shared during monthly workshops that I lead. The narratives-a child mourning a lost pen that symbolised her absent father, a woman grieving the death of a ne

Walking for hypertension.

BackgroundIncreased physical activity has been recommended as an important lifestyle modification for the prevention and control of hypertension. Walking is a low-cost form of physical activity and one which most people can do. Studies testing the effect of walking on blood pressure have revealed inconsistent findings.ObjectivesTo determine the effect of walking as a physical activity intervention on blood pressure and heart rate.Search methodsWe searched the following databases up to March 2020: the Cochrane Hypertension Specialised Register, CENTRAL (2020, Issue 2), Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase…

Walking from thought.

Online analysis and classification of single electroencephalogram (EEG) trials during motor imagery were used for navigation in the virtual environment (VE). The EEG was recorded bipolarly with electrode placement over the hand and foot representation areas. The aim of the study was to demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to move through a virtual street without muscular activity when the participant only imagines feet movements. This is achieved by exploiting a brain-computer interface (BCI) which transforms thought-modulated EEG signals into an output signal that controls event

Clinical Walking Speed, Free-Living Walking Cadence, and All-Cause Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: Walking speed has been shown to be associated with mortality and is conventionally obtained from short walking tests in clinical settings. Free-living walking parameters such as walking cadence can be derived from accelerometers. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether walking parameters measured in clinical and free-living settings are associated with comparable discriminative ability for all-cause mortality risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study, the Whitehall II accelerometer substudy in the UK, included a baseline from January 2012 to December 2013 …

Humans prioritize walking efficiency or walking stability based on environmental risk.

In human gait, the body's mechanical energy at the end of one step is reused to achieve forward progression during the subsequent step, thereby reducing the required muscle work. During the single stance phase, humans rely on the largely uncontrolled passive inverted pendular motion of the body to perpetuate forward motion. These passive body dynamics, while improving walking efficiency, also indicate lower passive dynamic stability in the anterior direction, since the individual will be less able to withstand a forward external perturbation. Here we test the novel hypothesis that humans manip…

Toe Walking Tool.

BACKGROUND: The Toe Walking Tool is used to highlight the need for further investigation of toe-walking children by a more qualified expert. Such a tool is not yet available within Greek clinical settings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt into Greek the Toe Walking Tool. METHODS: The Toe Walking Tool was translated into Greek according to international guidelines by five pediatric physiotherapists, all fluent in the English language. Fifteen children with toe-walking due to pathologic reasons or idiopathic toe-walking were video-recorded performing …

Walking to health.

Walking is a rhythmic, dynamic, aerobic activity of large skeletal muscles that confers the multifarious benefits of this with minimal adverse effects. Walking, faster than customary, and regularly in sufficient quantity into the 'training zone' of over 70% of maximal heart rate, develops and sustains physical fitness: the cardiovascular capacity and endurance (stamina) for bodily work and movement in everyday life that also provides reserves for meeting exceptional demands. Muscles of the legs, limb girdle and lower trunk are strengthened and the flexibility of their cardinal joints preserved…

Walked in with Boerhaave's...

Boerhaave's syndrome is a transmural rupture of the oesopahgus. It is a rarer, and less well described complication of forceful emesis. The more common complication being a non-transmural Mallory-Weiss tear. Boerhaave's is the most lethal perforation of the GI tract and has a mortality rate between 10 and 50%. It most commonly occurs after indulgence in food or alcohol, particularly in males aged 50-70 years. The well described presentation is of a middle aged man with a sudden onset of severe chest pain in the lower thorax/upper abdomen following repeated retching or vomiting induced by exces

Understanding walking activity in multiple sclerosis: step count, walking intensity and uninterrupted walking activity duration related to degree of disability.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), physical activity (PA) is most commonly measured as number of steps, while also walking intensity and walking activity duration are keys for a healthy lifestyle. The aim of this study was to investigate (1) the number of steps persons with MS (PwMS) take; (2) the number of steps they take at low and moderate intensity; and (3) their walking activity duration for 2, 3, 6, 10, 12 and 14 uninterrupted minutes; all related to the degree of disability. 64 PwMS participated, distinguished in a mild (n = 31) and moderate MS subgroup (n = 34) based on their ambulatory dysfu…

Muscle synergies during the walk-run and run-walk transitions.

BACKGROUND: Muscular synergies could represent the patterns of muscular activation used by the central nervous system (CNS) to simplify the production of movement. Studies in walking-running transitions described up to nine synergy modules, and an earlier activation of flexor and extension ankle muscular groups compared to running or walking. Our project aims to study the behaviour of muscle synergies in different stance and swing variations of walking-running (WRT) and running-walking (RWT) transitions. METHODS: Twenty-four trained men participated in this study. A variable speed protocol on…

Assessing dynamic stability in children with idiopathic toe walking during overground walking.

BACKGROUND: Children with idiopathic toe walking present with reduced ankle mobility, impaired balance, and difficulties in motor control. There is a need to diagnose idiopathic toe walking in a holistic manner and improve the monitoring of interventions. The aim is to assess dynamic stability with measures of margin of stability and whole-body angular momentum and evaluate their clinical relevance. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study with 35 idiopathic toe walkers (23 male, mean age (SD) 10.0 (2.9) years) and 20 typically developing controls (10 male, 11.4 (2.8) years). All partic…

Stiffness and Damping in Human Walking Across Different Directions and Walking Trials.

Human walking can be modeled using a springmass-damping (SMD) system. While most studies have focused on standard activities in healthy young to middle-aged populations, less attention has been given to participants' responses to unexpected gait perturbations. These responses may be valuable predictors of falls, particularly in older adults. Our previous study modeled walking in the vertical direction for a diverse group of participants. Since most gait perturbations occur in the medio-lateral and anteriorposterior directions, the next step involves extending the analysis to these directions a…
