This is a case of thyrotoxicosis, presumably due to Jod-Basedow syndrome, after stable iodine ingestion for thyroid blockade in a patient with ovarian carcinoma having 131I-labeled monoclonal antibody imaging. With the increased use of radioiodinated antibodies, for therapy and imaging, this possible side effect of excess stable iodine administration should be noted, especially in patients with pre-existing goiter.

Rifaximin, a new antibiotic derived from rifamycin SV, was measured in the cholecystic bile of 13 patients submitted to cholecystectomy, after oral administration of 1600 mg of the drug in the 48 hour preceding surgery. Rifaximin concentrations were quantified only in 6 patients and were at least five times lower than those detected with rifampicin, under similar experimental conditions. Results seem to indicate that rifaximin is virtually not absorbed through the intestinal mucosa after oral administration.

The pharmacokinetics of a single 600 mg oral dose of 1-cinnamoyl-2-methyl-5-methoxy-3-indolylacetic acid (cinmetacin, Cindomet) was studied in 8 healthy volunteers of both sexes. Seven patients in various stages of syphilis were treated by oral administration of amoxicillin (6 g daily) and probenecid (2 g daily) for 15 days. The treponemicidal level of amoxicillin was studied by a Treponema pallidum immobilization assay and found to be 0.070 micrograms/ml, as compared with 0.003 micrograms of penicillin/ml. Plasma theophylline concentrations were measured in 20 adults after single doses of 8 mg/kg of each of six oral sustained-release theophylline preparations. Twelve subjects were studied in a multiple-dose trial. Comparison of bioavailability and absorption characteristics suggest usefulness of some of these products for the purpose of maintaining safe and effective blood levels with twice-a-day dosing.

Oestradiol-decanoate, dissolved in arachis oil and orally administered to rodents, produces oestrogenic effects. Compared on a molecular basis the ester has 0.1-1.0 times the activity of ethinyl oestradiol, dependent on the species and the parameter studied. The effects of oestradiol-decanoate are less or absent when the oil is omitted. It is likely that absorption of the steroid ester takes place via the intestinal lymphatics in conjunction with the oil.
