Telencephalic afferents to the caudolateral neostriatum of the pigeon.

The pigeon caudolateral neostriatum (NCL) shares a dopaminergic innervation with mammalian frontal cortical areas and is implicated in the regulation of avian cognitive behavior. Retrograde tracing methods were used to identify forebrain projections to NCL and to suggest a possible role of this area in mediating spatial behavior. NCL receives telencephalic projections from the hyperstriatum accessorium, cells along the border of hyperstriatum dorsale and hyperstriatum ventrale, anterolateral hyperstriatum adjacent to the vallecula, confined cell groups within the anterior neostriatum, and subd

Alteration of human cutaneous afferent discharges as the result of long-lasting vibration.

The unitary activities of slowly (15 SAI) and fast-adapting type I (12 FAI) skin mechanoreceptive afferent units innervating the anterior part of the human leg and foot were recorded by using the microneurographic method. The recordings were performed both at rest and on application of cutaneous stimuli of various intensities before and after exposure of the corresponding receptive fields to vibration (0.5 mm peak to peak, 100 pulses/s, 10 min). The results show that 11% of the units tested, which were previously silent, developed a bursting pattern of postvibratory activity, which lasted 12 m

Characterization of mouse lumbar splanchnic and pelvic nerve urinary bladder mechanosensory afferents.

Sensory information from the urinary bladder is conveyed via lumbar splanchnic (LSN) and sacral pelvic (PN) nerves to the spinal cord. In the present report we compared the mechanosensitive properties of single afferent fibers in these two pathways using an in vitro mouse bladder preparation. Mechanosensitive primary afferents were recorded from the LSN or PN and distinguished based on their response to receptive field stimulation with different mechanical stimuli: probing (160 mg to 2 g), stretch (1-25 g), and stroking of the urothelium (10-1,000 mg). Four different classes of afferent were r

Cross-modal modulation gates nociceptive inputs in Drosophila.

Animals' response to a stimulus in one sensory modality is usually influenced by other modalities.1 One important type of multisensory integration is the cross-modal modulation, in which one sensory modality modulates (typically inhibits) another. Identification of the mechanisms underlying cross-modal modulations is crucial for understanding how sensory inputs shape animals' perception and for understanding sensory processing disorders.2,3,4 However, the synaptic and circuit mechanisms that underlie cross-modal modulation are poorly understood. This is due to the difficulty of separating cros

Neural and psychosocial mechanisms of pain sensitivity in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder that affects an estimated 5 million adults in the U.S. The hallmark is burning, searing, tingling, shooting, stabbing, deep aching, or sharp pain. Fibromyalgia is generally considered to be a "central sensitivity syndrome" where central sensitization is regarded as the cause of pain in its own right. Nonetheless, the case continues to be made that all central and spatially distributed peripheral components of fibromyalgia pain would fade if the peripheral generators could be silenced. Although neural mechanisms are clearly important in pa

Isolated relative afferent pupillary defect secondary to contralateral midbrain compression.

BACKGROUND: Relative afferent pupillary defects are typically related to ipsilateral lesions within the anterior visual pathways. OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient who had a workup for headache and was found to have an isolated left relative afferent pupillary defect without any other neurological findings. DESIGN: We review the neuroanatomy of the pupillary light reflex pathway and emphasize the nasotemporal bias of decussating fiber projections, which accounts for the relative afferent pupillary defect contralateral to the described lesion. Result Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain rev

Physiological regulation of magnocellular neurosecretory cell activity: integration of intrinsic, local and afferent mechanisms.

The hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei contain magnocellular neurosecretory cells (MNCs) that project to the posterior pituitary gland where they secrete either oxytocin or vasopressin (the antidiuretic hormone) into the circulation. Oxytocin is important for delivery at birth and is essential for milk ejection during suckling. Vasopressin primarily promotes water reabsorption in the kidney to maintain body fluid balance, but also increases vasoconstriction. The profile of oxytocin and vasopressin secretion is principally determined by the pattern of action potentials initiated

Narrative review: the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia.

Primary fibromyalgia is a common yet poorly understood syndrome characterized by diffuse chronic pain accompanied by other somatic symptoms, including poor sleep, fatigue, and stiffness, in the absence of disease. Fibromyalgia does not have a distinct cause or pathology. Nevertheless, in the past decade, the study of chronic pain has yielded new insights into the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and related chronic pain disorders. Accruing evidence shows that patients with fibromyalgia experience pain differently from the general population because of dysfunctional pain processing in the centra

Specific somatic sensory relays in the mammalian diencephalon.

There are five major domains within the diencephalon that receive input from ascending somatic sensory pathways serving the limbs, trunk and viscera. These domains include the ventroposterolateral nucleus (VPL), the posterior group complex (PO), the zona incerta (ZI), the intralaminar complex and the thalamic reticular nucleus. Of these five domains, VPL is commonly considered a "specific" somatic "relay". The reasons for this view are that VPL receives dense, synaptically secure and precisely organized input from the equally precisely organized dorsal column nuclei (DCN), that most of VPL's n

Bladder afferents and their role in the overactive bladder.

The role of afferent innervation of the bladder in the pathophysiology of urinary incontinence has become the focus of intense interest. In normal health, the afferent pathway is mediated largely by Adelta-fibers, which ultimately send information about the state of bladder fullness to the pontine micturition center via the periaqueductal gray matter. However, after spinal disruption, a different type of afferent pathway emerges, mediated by capsaicin-sensitive C-fibers that drive a spinal segmental reflex pathway, causing neurogenic detrusor overactivity. The common sources of afferent inform

The ventral-hypothalamic input route: a common neural network for abstract cognition and sexuality.

Classically, external receptors of the body transmit information from the environment to the cerebral cortex via the thalamus. This review explains and argues that only concrete external information is transmitted from peripheral receptors to the cortex via a thalamic route, while abstract and sexual external information are actually transmitted from peripheral receptors to the cortex through a cognitive hypothalamic route. Sexual function typically implies participation of two distinct partners, ensuring reproduction in many species including humans. Human sexual response involves participati

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus prethalamicus in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus.

The nucleus prethalamicus (PTh) receives fibers from the optic tectum and then projects to the dorsal telencephalon in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus. However, it remained unclear whether the PTh is a visual relay nucleus, because the optic tectum receives not only visual but also other sensory modalities. Furthermore, precise telencephalic regions receiving prethalamic input remained unknown in the goby. We therefore investigated the full set of afferent and efferent connections of the PTh by direct tracer injections into the nucleus. Injections into the PTh labeled cells in the

Esophageal afferent innervation and its role in gastro-esophageal reflux disease symptoms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the wide prevalence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying heartburn perception in the esophagus of patients with GERD remains incompletely understood. Recent studies have highlighted the potential influence sensory afferent nerves innervating the oesophageal epithelium may have on heartburn pathogenesis. The purpose of this review is to consider the current understanding of esophageal afferent neuronal innervation, including the nociceptive role of acid-sensing receptors expressed on these sensory nerves, in relation

Absence of the relative afferent pupillary defect with monocular temporal visual field loss.

We report five patients with monocular temporal visual field abnormalities who did not have clinically detectable relative afferent pupillary defects. The causes for the field defects were posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, craniopharyngioma, pituitary adenoma, pseudotumor cerebri, and traumatic optic neuropathy. We discuss the possible explanations for our observations, considering the known anatomy of the pregeniculate visual pathways and the afferent pupillary pathways.

Projections of the densocellular part of the hyperpallium in the rostral Wulst of pigeons (Columba livia).

The Wulst in birds shows a four-layered structure: apical part of the hyperpallium (HA), interstitial part of HA (IHA), intercalated part of hyperpallium (HI), and densocellular part of hyperpallium (HD). The Wulst consists of a small rostral somatosensory region and a larger caudal visual region. The visual HD relays visual information to IHA and HA in the Wulst and also transfers visual information to the hippocampal formation (Atoji et al., J Comp Neurol 526: 146-165, 2018). However, fiber pathways of the rostral HD remain unknown. In the present study, the fiber connections of the rostral

Dyspnoea: underlying mechanisms and treatment.

Dyspnoea is the result of a complex interaction of physiological, psychosocial, social, and environmental factors. Although several sensory receptors located throughout the respiratory system are considered to be responsible for generation of dyspnoea, there is no afferent receptor solely responsible for the sensation of dyspnoea. Afferent information from the sensory receptors is processed at the cortex along with the respiratory motor command from the cortex and brainstem, and a mismatch between the motor command and the incoming afferent information may result in dyspnoea. Dyspnoea is not a

Appropriate use of antitussives and protussives. A practical review.

As a symptom of an underlying condition, cough is one of the most common reasons patients see physicians. To the majority, a cough means that 'something is wrong' and it causes exhaustion and/or self-consciousness. Patients find these reasons as well as effects on lifestyle, fear of cancer and/or AIDS or tuberculosis to be the most troublesome concerns for which they seek medical attention. The treatment of cough can be divided into two main categories: (a) therapy that controls, prevents or eliminates cough (i.e. antitussive); and (b) therapy that makes cough more effective (i.e. protussive).

The role of dorsal columns pathway in visceral pain.

Traditionally, the dorsal column-medial lemniscus system has been viewed as a pathway not involved in pain perception. However, recent clinical and experimental studies have provided compelling evidence that implicates an important role of the dorsal column pathway in relaying visceral nociceptive information. Several clinical studies have shown that a small lesion that interrupts fibers of the dorsal columns (DC) that ascend close to the midline of the spinal cord significantly relieves pain and decreases analgesic requirements in patients suffering from cancer originating in visceral organs.

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus sphericus in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis: convergence of olfactory and vomeronasal information in the lateral cortex and the amygdala.

This paper is an account of the afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus sphericus (NS), which is the major secondary vomeronasal structure in the brain of the snake Thamnophis sirtalis. There are four major efferent pathways from the NS: 1) a bilateral projection that courses, surrounding the accessory olfactory tract, and innervates several amygdaloid nuclei (nucleus of the accessory olfactory tract, dorsolateral amygdala, external amygdala, and ventral anterior amygdala), the rostral parts of the dorsal and lateral cortices, and the accessory olfactory bulb; 2) a bilateral projectio
