Influence of age at drinking onset on the alcohol deprivation effect and stress-induced drinking in female rats.

We have recently observed increased stress responsiveness with regard to alcohol consumption in male rats that consumed alcohol since their adolescent period. Thus, early age at drinking onset can induce enhanced stress-induced alcohol drinking in male rats. However, it is not known whether female rats respond in a similar way. Therefore, we compared the drinking behavior of two female Wistar rat groups--one that acquired alcohol consumption during adolescence (adolescent group) and the other that acquired their drinking during adulthood (adult group) in a model of long-term voluntary alcohol …

Longitudinal analysis for between- and within-person influences of descriptive alcohol drinking norms and attitudes on drinking outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to expand on existing research related to the theory of planned behavior (TPB) by exploring both between-person and within-person effects of descriptive norms and attitudes toward moderate and heavy drinking on drinking outcomes, including drinks per week, blackouts, and alcohol-related consequences. While previous studies focus on between-person effects, this study uniquely investigates both between-person effects as well as within-person changes over time, using longitudinal data collected at six points over 12 months. METHODS: Participants included 484 mandated

Situational drinking in private and public locations: A multilevel analysis of blood alcohol level in Finnish drinking occasions.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The first aim was to estimate the extent to which the variation in alcohol use across specific drinking occasions arises from variation at the occasion level and from variation at the drinker level. The second aim was to identify characteristics of drinking situations that moderate or increase situational alcohol use beyond the influence of drinker-level characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: The general population aged 15-69 years in Finland was sampled randomly in 2008. The multilevel analysis was based on data from 1511 drinkers and 2933 drinking occasions that occurre

Drinking to Cope During COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of External and Internal Factors in Coping Motive Pathways to Alcohol Use, Solitary Drinking, and Alcohol Problems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in massive disruptions to society, to the economy, and to daily life. Some people may turn to alcohol to cope with stress during the pandemic, which may put them at risk for heavy drinking and alcohol-related harms. Research is needed to identify factors that are relevant for coping-motivated drinking during these extraordinary circumstances to inform interventions. This study provides an empirical examination of coping motive pathways to alcohol problems during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Participants (N = 320; 54.7% male

State Alcohol Policies Most Strongly Associated With College Students' Drinking, Driving Risks, and Alcohol-Related Harm.

INTRODUCTION: State-level alcohol policies reduce excessive drinking and related harms in the general population, but their effectiveness may vary by policy type and age group. This study examined the associations that mutually exclusive policy subgroups of the Alcohol Policy Scale had with alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences among U.S. college students. METHODS: Data were from repeated cross-sectional surveys of 902,486 college students aged 18-24 years from 591 four-year institutions in 47 states during 2008-2019. Outcomes were past 2-week binge drinking, 30-day frequent a

Inhibition of HCN channels decreases motivation for alcohol and deprivation-induced drinking in alcohol preferring rats.

Globally, around 400 million people live with an alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet current treatments available are suboptimal at a population level. Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated cation (HCN) channels are implicated in the modulation of complex motivated behaviours, including reward seeking. Here, we investigated the potential involvement of HCN channels in alcohol reinforcing effects, contributing to alcohol intake and relapse-like drinking following abstinence in iP rats. The functional role of HCN channels in the motivation to acquire alcohol and relapse-like behaviour

Medications for alcohol use disorder improve survival in patients with hazardous drinking and alcohol-associated cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) are highly effective in achieving and maintaining abstinence in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Our aim was to evaluate the effect of MAUD on all-cause mortality in patients with alcohol-associated cirrhosis and active alcohol use. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with alcohol-associated cirrhosis and high-risk alcohol use disorder in the Veterans Outcomes and Costs Associated with Liver Disease (VOCAL) database. Propensity score matching for exposure to MAUD (acamprosate or naltrexone) within a year a

Abrupt cessation of reboxetine along alcohol deprivation results in alcohol intake escalation after reinstatement of drinking.

Major depression (MD) is a frequent comorbidity in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients. Antidepressant prescription is often limited by poor clinical outcomes or unwanted side effects in comorbid AUD-MD patients. Recent studies suggest that abrupt cessation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors antidepressant treatment increases alcohol consumption after an alcohol deprivation period in rats. However, the appearance of this effect after the treatment with selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) is not known. Here, we report that interruption of subchronic (14 days) treatment w

Co-Administration of Low-Dose Naltrexone and Bupropion Reduces Alcohol Drinking in Alcohol-Preferring (P) Rats.

BACKGROUND: This study examined whether combining naltrexone (NTX) with bupropion (BUP) is more effective in reducing alcohol drinking in alcohol-preferring (P) rats with a genetic predisposition toward high voluntary alcohol intake than either drug alone. METHODS: Alcohol-experienced, adult, male, P rats were fed NTX alone in a dose of 10.0 mg/kg BW, BUP alone in a dose of 10.0 mg/kg BW, BUP alone in a dose of 20.0 mg/kg BW, NTX (10.0 mg/kg BW) + BUP (10.0 mg/kg BW), or vehicle (VEH) at 1 hour prior to onset of a daily 2-hour alcohol access period for 5 consecutive days. Familial alcohol supply, adolescent drinking and early alcohol onset in 45 low and middle income countries.

AIMS: This study estimated the extent of familial alcohol supply in 45 low and middle income countries (LMIC), and examined the country-level effects of familial alcohol supply on adolescents' alcohol use. METHOD: We used data from 45 LMICs that participated in the Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) between 2003 and 2013 (n = 139,840). The weighted prevalence of familial alcohol supply in each country was estimated. Multilevel binary and ordinal logistic regression analyses were used to examine the country-level effect of familial alcohol supply on early onset of alcohol use (fi

Interactions between migraine and tension-type headache and alcohol drinking, alcohol flushing, and hangover in Japanese.

The aim of the study was to investigate associations between headache types and alcohol drinking, alcohol flushing, and hangover. Alcohol consumption is inhibited by the presence of inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) whose carriers are susceptible to alcohol flushing and hangovers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the 2,577 subjects (men/women: 1,018/1,559) who reported having ever experienced headaches unrelated to common colds and alcohol hangovers among 5,408 (2,778/2,630) Tokyo health checkup examinees. We used a questionnaire inquiring about current and past facial flushing …

Differential effects of quinine adulteration of alcohol on seeking and drinking.

Alcohol dependence is characterized by compulsive alcohol use. Alcohol-paired stimuli can drive compulsive alcohol use, induce craving, and lead to relapse. Alcohol dependence is highly heritable, and individuals with a family history are at elevated risk to develop an alcohol use disorder. Understanding the association between genetic vulnerability to alcohol dependence and neural alterations that promote an addiction phenotype are critical to the prevention and treatment of alcohol dependence. Here we use selectively bred alcohol-preferring P rats and their progenitor strain, Wistar rats, to

Four year MMPI changes in abstinent and drinking alcoholics.

Alcoholic patients completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) while hospitalized for treatment and again after 4 years of follow-up. Those who remained abstinent and functioned well in the community for the 4-yr period were characterized during treatment by a significant elevation on the Depression (D) scale which decreased to normal ranges at follow-up. Those who continued to drink periodically over the 4-yr period had initial peaks on Psychopathy (Pd) and Hypomania (Ma) which were still elevated at follow-up. An intermediate group who were usually abstinent during the 4
