The figures obtained in simultaneous radioimmunological assays of serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations and erythrocyte folate concent … y was rarely encountered. Megaloblastic transformation of the bone narrow was present in 56% of the alcoholics with reduced erythrocyte folates and in 10% of those with normal folate concentration. No correlation was found between serum and erythrocyte folate concentration and degree of liver damage. Serum vitamin B12 levels were higher in patients with cirr …

Characteristic features of liver disease in Japanese alcoholics.

Histopathological analysis for 94 Japanese alcoholic patients revealed alcoholic hepatitis 11%, chronic hepatitis 14%, fatty liver 16%, alcoholic liver fibrosis 22% and liver cirrhosis 31%. Alcoholic hyaline was found in only 30% of the cases of alcoholic hepatitis. Alcoholic liver fibrosis (without any findings except fibrosis and steatosis) was distinct from other type of diseases. Chronic hepatitis in alcoholics was mostly chronic active hepatitis (77%), whereas only 35% was chronic active hepatitis in nonalcoholics. Histologically typical alcoholic liver cirrhosis was uncommon.

Brain stem auditory evoked responses in chronic alcoholics.

Brain stem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were performed on 25 alcoholic patients with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, 56 alcoholic patients … The I-III interval was prolonged in 32% of those with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome but in only 6% of alcoholics without the syndrome. These abnormalities improved following thiamine treatment and abstinence from alcohol. The presence of prolonged I-III interval in an alcoholic should raise the possibility of Wernicke's encephalopathy.

A psychosocial comparison of drunken drivers and alcoholics.

A self-administered questionnaire was used to compare selected demographic, drinking and psychosocial variables of 306 convicted drunken drivers with those of 289 alcoholics and 269 controls. The drunken-driver group fell between the other groups on many parameters but resembled the control group on as many others.

[Serious infections in alcoholics. 2. Etiology of bacteremia and meningitis in alcoholics discharged from hospitals in Funen 1981, 1984 and 1986].

In 1981, 1984 and 1986 relatively more episodes of bacteremia with Corynebacterium in one or two tubes out of twelve were found in alcoholics and these normally negligible episodes may be a iatrogenic marker of intubation and esophagoscopy in alcoholics. Definite bacteremic episodes with E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter, Streptococcus faecalis, haemolytic Streptococcus and Bacteroides were found in 0.79% of alcoholics and 0.37% of non-alcoholics (0.01 greater than p greater than 0.001). The frequency per 100,000…

Subacute encephalopathy with seizures in alcoholics (SESA syndrome) revisited.

PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to describe two additional cases of subacute encephalopathy with seizures in alcoholics (SESA syndrome), and to propose that this entity now should be considered as a subtype of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics, electroencephalography (EEG), neuroimaging data, and prognosis of these two further cases of SESA syndrome. In addition, we compare our findings with the cases previously described in the English literature in order to propose new diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Two adults with h…

Reduction of Purkinje cell volume in cerebellum of alcoholics.

It is generally believed that chronic alcohol consumption results in cerebellar atrophy and Purkinje cell loss, especially in the anterior vermal region. A post-mortem stereological design was applied to cerebella from 10 chronic male alcoholics (mean age 45.5 years) with a minimum of 10 years of severe addiction and 10 male controls (mean age 42.5 years). All alcoholics had pathoanatomical evidence of alcohol abuse but no clinical signs of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Cerebellum was divided into five different areas: the anterior and posterior lobe, the anterior and posterior vermis, and the fl…

[Neuropsychological deficits in alcoholics: some implications for road safety].

AIM: There are various published studies showing that chronic alcoholics present cognitive deficit. In this conference we would like to review the most actual studies focusing on the neuropsychological alterations as consequences of the long and abusive alcohol intake. We also will analyse the involvement of these deficit in a complex task as driving. DEVELOPMENT: The long and abusive alcohol intake produces an affectation of the central nervous system. We could observe its consequences both in short and long term. Attention and memory deficit and a slowness of information processing are very…

Factors associated with compliance of alcoholics in outpatient treatment.

Predictors of compliance with psychosocial treatment were examined in a clinical sample of 150 patients seeking outpatient treatment for alcohol problems. Predictor variables were as follows: a) patient characteristics at the beginning of treatment and b) treatment characteristics of a matching model developed from the Conceptual System Theory. This model was based on the conceptual level of patients and therapists, and on the structure of the treatment. Using logistic regression analysis, we identified predictors of compliance in the motivation phase (first four consultations) and the active

Attitudes towards alcoholics anonymous by dually diagnosed psychiatric inpatients.

Self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have been viewed as beneficial adjuncts to comprehensive treatment programs for the treatment of alcohol use disorders. The usefulness of such programs for individuals with dual psychiatric disorders has not been established. This study examined the alcohol and psychiatric treatment histories of 60 psychiatric inpatients with concomitant alcohol use or abuse with attention to the frequency and correlates with past AA attendance. Most subjects reported feeling comfortable with the basic tenets of AA; neither diagnosis nor gender was related t…

Childhood trauma and depression in alcoholics: relationship to hostility.

OBJECTIVE: To examine for a relationship between childhood trauma and depression in alcoholics. METHODS: Euthymic depressed alcoholics (N = 23) were compared with never depressed alcoholics (N = 20) for their scores on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Subjects also completed the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ). RESULTS: Euthymic depressed alcoholics had significantly higher scores on the CTQ for childhood emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional neglect. They also had significantly higher hostility scores on the HDHQ. There were signific…

Neurocognitive deficits in alcoholics and social drinkers: a continuum?

Our research program has investigated neurocognitive deficits in sober alcoholics for several decades. We have shown that both male and female adult alcoholics--compared with peer nonalcoholic controls--have deficits on tests of learning, memory, abstracting, problem-solving, perceptual analysis and synthesis, speed of information processing, and efficiency. The deficits are equivalent to those found in patients with known brain dysfunction of a mild to moderate nature. Attempts to identify factors other than alcoholism to account for these differences have been unsuccessful. The deficits appe…

Is working memory intact in alcoholics? An ERP study.

Few investigators have applied the working memory theory to studies on abstinent chronic alcoholics, though it has been reported that the deficits in short-term memory appear to be specific to visuo-spatial and problem-solving tasks. In the present study, we recorded ERPs from 40 male control subjects and 78 alcoholics performing a modified delayed matching to sample task. To minimize the possible confound of retinotopic projections for the matching stimuli, in contrast to the non-matching stimuli, we employed a unique set of stimuli in our delayed matching to sample task. Our results indicate…

Pain control in recovering alcoholics: effects of local anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: The medical literature suggests that alcoholics may present greater challenges to achieving clinical pain control than nonalcoholics. This study was undertaken to test the hypotheses that: (1) significant differences exist between alcoholics and nonalcoholics on detection and pain thresholds during electric tooth stimulation; (2) group differences exist in the depth and time course of pulpal anesthesia; and (3) responses to tooth stimulation are associated with severity of alcoholism and/or other psychological factors. METHOD: Male alcoholics (n = 22) in aftercare treatment (mean l…
