Assessing the prevalence of alcohol consumption in early pregnancy using blood biomarker analysis: a consistent pattern across north-east England?

BACKGROUND: We previously investigated the prevalence of alcohol consumption in early pregnancy in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, a locality of north-east England. The prevalence was 1.4% based on blood sample biomarker analysis using carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) and 3.5% for gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). AIMS: To supplement this research by investigating the prevalence of alcohol use using identical methods in a different locality of the same region. METHODS: Six-hundred random blood samples taken at the antenatal booking appointment were anonymously analysed fo

Typical Alcohol Use and Bystander Intervention: The Mediating Roles of Comfort With Sexism and Bystander Efficacy Among Navy Service Members.

Sexual violence and alcohol use are significant public health issues, with particularly high prevalences in the military. Bystander intervention is an evidence-based approach to prevent sexual assault; however, alcohol use can interfere with bystander behavior. Prior research with male college students suggests that heavier alcohol use may affect bystander intentions and behaviors indirectly by influencing attitudes that promote sexual violence and discourage bystander intervention, such as comfort with sexism. The aim of the present study was to examine whether typical patterns of alcohol use

Alcohol and risks for HIV/AIDS among sexually transmitted infection clinic patients in Cape Town, South Africa.

Alcohol use is prevalent in South Africa and alcohol use may be associated with higher risk for HIV transmission. This paper reports a study of the association between alcohol use and HIV risk-related behavior among 134 men and 92 women receiving sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic services in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants completed anonymous surveys of demographic information, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors. Results showed that problem drinking was common among STI clinic patients; 58% of men and 28% of women scored above a cut-off of 9 on the Alcohol Use Disorders I

Alcohol misuse, alcohol-related risky behaviors, and childhood adversity among soldiers who returned from Iraq or Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Soldiers face a great number of traumatic combat exposures while deployed, which research has shown to contribute to the development of alcohol misuse. In addition to this known risk factor, we hypothesize that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) also contribute to the likelihood that soldiers will engage in these behaviors, even after adjusting for deployment-related factors (mental health problems and combat exposure). METHODS: Soldiers were surveyed anonymously approximately 3 months upon return from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 t

Relation of Patient's Opinion of Alcohol's Health Effects and Drinking Habits Among Hospitalized Patients With Cardiovascular Disease.

Media reports frequently cite observational studies and meta-analyses to promote the reputed cardiovascular benefits of moderate alcohol consumption; however, it is unclear whether public opinion or drinking behavior align with these reports. We administered an anonymous, single-center, 35-question, cross-sectional survey among patients hospitalized for acute cardiac illnesses from June to September 2019, who were eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. We assessed patient opinions toward alcohol use, perceptions of alcohol's health impact, and role of media in forming these beliefs. We hypothesi

The relationship between drugs use and risk behaviors in Brazilian university students.

The aim was to describe relationships between gender and drug use as well as risk behaviors that may be associated with drug use among first-year students at the University of São Paulo-Ribeirão Preto. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is an anonymous survey that was used for this descriptive correlational study. It was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States. The sample (n=200) included (50%) males and (50%) females. Their ages ranged from 18 to 26 years. Results showed that more female than male students use alcohol and tobacco, but that the proba

Social context, sensation seeking, and teen-age alcohol abuse.

An anonymous questionnaire was administered to more than 1,200 seventh to 12th grade students in four rural public schools in western New York State. The questionnaire measured alcohol use, the social contexts of drinking, and the personality trait known as "sensation seeking." A majority (57%) were drinkers, and discriminant function analyses were performed on their scores on these measures to determine if they could distinguish between different levels of alcohol use intensity, alcohol-impaired driving, and riding with an impaired driver. Results indicated social context measure were effecti

An Examination of Gender Differences in the Association of Adolescent Substance use with Eating and Weight Loss Attitudes.

OBJECTIVE: To assess gender differences in the relationship between eating and weight loss attitudes (EWAs), and 30-day tobacco and alcohol use among adolescents, while controlling for potential confounds (age, country of birth, psychological distress, pubertal development, peer alcohol and tobacco use, and sexual activity). METHODS: School students aged between 11 and 17 years (N = 10,273) from high schools in the State of Victoria (Australia) completed surveys in class under conditions of anonymity and confidentiality. RESULTS: The interaction between EWAs and gender was significant for to

Alcohol-related injuries, hazardous drinking, and BrAC levels among a sample of bar patrons.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related injuries are a serious public health issue and research has found that alcohol consumption is positively correlated with injury risk. OBJECTIVE: To better understand the association between alcohol consumption and injury risk. METHODS: We conducted four anonymous cross-sectional field studies among a sample of bar patrons (N = 917) to assess breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) levels, hazardous drinking levels (based on AUDIT-C score), and past year alcohol-related injuries in Fall 2014. Next, we conducted two logistic regression analyses to predict alcohol-relate

Differences in Patterns of Alcohol Use and Sexual Risk-Taking Behaviours Among Sexually Active Australian and Overseas-Born Domestic and International University Students in Australia.

Alcohol use has been linked to sexual risk-taking behaviour, particularly among young people in Australia, who are also substantially represented in sexually transmissible infection (STI). While research on alcohol use and sexual risk-taking among university students in Australia exists, no studies outside recent Tertiary Students Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey (TSSHS) publications have distinguished between Australian-born and overseas-born domestic students, despite evidence that migrant populations may show different alcohol use and sexual behaviour patterns. Using data from the TSSH

The Grey Market for Alcohol on Social Media in Sweden.

AIMS: In recent years, a grey market has emerged in Sweden where teenagers use social media to obtain alcohol. This market has not yet been explored qualitatively. The present study addresses this gap by examining how social media is used to illicitly trade alcohol. METHODS: First, a netnographic approach involved systematically searching for and documenting social media accounts offering alcohol. Second, 33 in-depth, app-based textual interviews were conducted with 16 sellers and 17 buyers who had engaged in illicit alcohol transactions. Responses were thematically analysed within a critical

Assessing prevalence of alcohol consumption in early pregnancy: Self-report compared to blood biomarker analysis.

Providing appropriate antenatal and postnatal care for women who drink alcohol in pregnancy is only possible if those at risk can be identified. We aimed to compare the prevalence of alcohol consumption in the first trimester of pregnancy using self-report and blood biomarker analysis. Six-hundred routine blood samples from 2014, taken at the antenatal booking appointment, in the first trimester of pregnancy, were anonymously analysed for the presence of Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT), a validated marker of chronic alcohol exposure (normalising 2-3 weeks from abstinence) and Gamma-gl

Voluntary outreach counselling and testing for HIV and STI among men who have sex with men in Antwerp.

BACKGROUND: High risk settings for transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) offer an opportunity for screening of difficult to reach risk groups. METHODS: Free, anonymous counselling and testing for HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia and hepatitis B/C were offered to visitors in two selected gay venues in Antwerp, by a multidisciplinary team. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire. The STI-test results were communicated by cell phone using standardised text messages. RESULTS: In total, 137 MSM were tested. Fetal alcohol syndrome: knowledge and attitudes of family medicine clerkship and residency directors.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are the leading preventable causes of developmental disabilities with serious permanent consequences. Regardless of the increased awareness of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), 13% of women in the United States drink alcohol during pregnancy. Health care professionals do not routinely assess the frequency and quantity of alcohol use by their patients. This study examined the knowledge, skills, and practices of family medicine residency and clerkship directors and assessed the time devoted and format of FAS curricula in the programs. Psychosocial interventions to reduce alcohol consumption in concurrent problem alcohol and illicit drug users.

BACKGROUND: Problem alcohol use is common among people who use illicit drugs (PWID) and is associated with adverse health outcomes. It is also an important factor contributing to a poor prognosis among drug users with hepatitis C virus (HCV) as it impacts on progression to hepatic cirrhosis or opioid overdose in PWID. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions to reduce alcohol consumption in PWID (users of opioids and stimulants). Uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform to support the mental well-being older adults: a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of traditional mental health services among older adults remains low. Digital peer support offers older adults a resource for engaging with others to independently support their mental well-being. This qualitative study explored the uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform (Breathing Space) for older adults with depressive symptoms and alcohol use concerns. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 30 participants aged 60-80 years explored participants' uptake and engagement with Breathing Space, a novel, moderated, private, and anony
