Effect of Alginate Coatings on Hydroxyapatite/β-Tricalcium Phosphate Scaffold Behavior.

Chronic oral and maxillofacial diseases are frequently associated with progressive alveolar bone loss, leading to impaired structural integrity of the jaw and increased risk of implant failure, microbial colonization, and microfracture formation. Ceramic scaffolds such as those made of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) have attracted considerable attention because of their controlled resorption properties and the promotion of rapid new vital bone formation. The aim of this research is to enhance the performance of scaffolds composed of HA and β-TCP used for guided bone tis

Lignin/alginate biomaterials as a promising complementary approach in ocular chlamydial infection.

BACKGROUND: Ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis remains the leading infectious cause of preventable blindness worldwide. While antibiotic-based strategies have significantly reduced disease burden, sustained control in endemic regions still relies on repeated treatments, highlighting the need for complementary, locally acting approaches that reduce treatment burden and systemic exposure. METHODS: We evaluated a lignin-based biomaterial formulation, dehydrogenation polymer lignin in alginate (DHP/Alg), in ocular systems in vitro and in vivo. Anti-chlamydial activity was first assessed

Extracellular Vesicle-embedded alginate hydrogel patch for accelerated wound healing.

The process of skin wound healing is markedly impaired by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the persistent presence of pro-inflammatory macrophages in the injured tissue. To address these pathological challenges, we herein developed an alginate-based hydrogel patch (EGEV-Gel) engineered for the sustained release of human adipose stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (hASC-EVs) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). hASC-EVs were incorporated to promote tissue regeneration, while EGCG served as a potent ROS scavenger. In an in vitro wound healing model using the transwell in

Fe/Se nanocomposite-loaded chitosan/alginate films for wound healing.

Infectious wounds pose a major challenge to the healthcare sector, with numerous barriers, infections, dysregulated inflammation, and impaired cellular functions as well as complex healing mechanisms. To overcome these challenges, we report the fabrication of disulfide crosslinked chitosan/alginate (CAT)-based film loaded with iron oxide/selenium nanocomposite (SeIO) and ursodeoxycholic acid drug (UDC). Loading of SeIO and UDC in UDC/SeIO/CAT film leads to ⁓47 % increment in tensile strength as compared to CAT film. UDC/SeIO/CAT film shows the porosity of ∼70 % and swelling ratios of around 80

New therapeutic insights of marine derived alginate nanoparticles on experimental giardiasis.

Giardiasis, caused by the protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia, is a prevailing gastrointestinal infection with significant global health implications. Traditional treatments, primarily based on nitroimidazole derivatives, often face challenges such as drug resistance and adverse side effects. This study explores the use of alginate nanoparticles (Alg-NPs) as a novel therapy against experimental giardiasis. Treating Giardia-infected mice with Alg-NPs resulted in a significant reduction in the parasite load up to 88.2 % and 92.7 % in trophozoite and cyst counts, respectively. Ultrastructurally, t

Chitosan for improved encapsulation of thyme aqueous extract in alginate-based microparticles.

Ionotropic gelation is a low-cost, easy and green microencapsulation technique. However, the encapsulation of highly soluble compounds is challenging because of the wide loss of material into the external water phase by passive diffusion and the consequent low encapsulation efficiency. In this work an important increase of encapsulation efficiency for Thymus vulgaris L. aqueous extract in alginate-based microparticles has been obtained. A formulation with the proper thyme extract/alginate ratio (30:70) was used as reference and then optimized by adding different co-carrier excipients. Micropar

High-viscoelasticity alginate-based coatings for reversible zinc metal anodes.

High-safety aqueous zinc (Zn) ion batteries are troubled by dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction on Zn anode, which can be well solved via the construction of surface protective layer. The recent researches mainly focus on the bulk property of the protective layer, but its separation from Zn anode is ignored. In this work, high-viscoelasticity alginate-based (HVAA) layer was in-situ constructed on Zn anodes by the cross-linking of sodium alginate with formaldehyde and the plastifying of glycerin. HVAA layer can combine with H2O and coordinate with Zn2+ ions in aqueous electrolyte to

Electron beam treated injectable agarose/alginate beads prepared by electrospraying.

Granular hydrogels have evolved into an innovative technology for biomedicine. Unlike conventional hydrogels, granular hydrogels display dynamic properties like injectability and porosity, making them feasible for applications in 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering. High-energy electron irradiation combines sterilization and tuning of hydrogel properties without adding potentially cytotoxic chemicals. In this study, granular agarose/alginate hydrogels are prepared by electrospraying. Utilizing 10 MeV electron irradiation, the granular hydrogels are treated in a dose range of 0 kGy-30 kGy rel

Targeting polysaccharides such as chitosan, cellulose, alginate and starch for designing hemostatic dressings.

Unfortunately hemorrhage and its complications (e.g. anemia, organ failure, and hypothermia) induced by traumatic injury, surgery, and disorders of bleeding play an all too familiar role in human morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is difficult to overstate the importance of better understanding the role of polysaccharides in advanced hemostatic dressings (HDs). This review includes consideration of polysaccharide hemostatic dressing mechanism of action, relative efficacy, cost and safety. Polysaccharide-based HDs are widely used in management not only of external and internal bleeding but

Extrusion-Based 3D Printing for Highly Porous Alginate Materials Production.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a promising technology for solving a wide range of problems: regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, chemistry, etc. One of the potential applications of additive technologies is the production of highly porous structures with complex geometries, while printing is carried out using gel-like materials. However, the implementation of precise gel printing is a difficult task due to the high requirements for "ink". In this paper, we propose the use of gel-like materials based on sodium alginate as "ink" for the implementation of the developed technology of ext

Design of Alginate-Based Bionanocomposites with Electrical Conductivity for Active Food Packaging.

Bionanocomposite materials have been designed as a promising route to enhance biopolymer properties, especially for food packaging application. The present study reports the preparation of bionanocomposite films of alginate with different loadings of pure reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or of mixed zinc oxide-rGO (ZnO-rGO) fillers by solvent casting. Sepiolite is used to make compatible rGO with the hydrophilic matrix. The addition of fillers to alginate matrix maintains the low water solubility promoted by the calcium chloride treatment, and, additionally, they demonstrate a weaker mechanical pr

Larvicidal composite alginate hydrogel combined with a Pickering emulsion of essential oil.

Sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (S-CNCs) can be used to encapsulate thyme white essential oil (EO) that is volatile and immiscible with water. S-CNCs form a Pickering emulsion (PE) with EOs and the micron-scale PEs are embedded in sodium alginate (SA) to form macroscale hydrogel beads. The incorporation of PEs with SA is confirmed with FTIR, XRD, SEM and confocal microscopic characterizations and the release behavior is monitored to understand the time-dependent biological activity of the EOs. The larvicidal performance of the SA-PE composite hydrogel beads is investigated with Aedes albopic
