BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eyelid allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) attributed to ophthalmic medications is often underreported, which can result in poor outcomes. Patch testing for eyelid ACD requires up-to-date knowledge of potential allergens. The aim of this study was to investigate allergens in ophthalmic medicaments in New Zealand.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional review of ophthalmic medicaments available in New Zealand in October 2023. Prescription and over-the-counter products were catalogued with their respective ingredient lists according to product data sheets. Products unappro…

Eyelid dermatitis is a common dermatologic concern representing a broad range of inflammatory dermatoses. The most commonly reported cause of eyelid dermatitis is allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction caused by exposure to external allergens that is diagnosed via epicutaneous patch testing. The most common contact allergens associated with eyelid dermatitis are metals, fragrances, preservatives, acrylates, and topical medications, which may be found in a variety of sources, including cosmetics, ophthalmic medications, nail lacquers, and jewelry. Managem…

BACKGROUND: Spanish population is rather homogeneous in its genetic and sociocultural characteristics, but allergen sensitization shows wide geographical variations. We aimed at assessing whether sensitization to different allergens in the diverse geographical areas induced different clinical and quality-of-life characteristics in adult patients with a first-time diagnosis of rhinitis and/or asthma.
METHODS: Two sequential, identically designed studies were carried out to evaluate such associations (PERFILAR I and II). PERFILAR II was an extension of PERFILAR I with additional allergens being…

Molecular cloning of cockroach allergens and their expression as recombinant proteins have allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms of cockroach allergic disease. Recombinant cockroach allergens have been used for skin testing or in vitro methods to measure IgE antibody levels in serum. Early studies evaluating selected U.S. patients revealed that a cocktail of four cockroach allergens, Bla g 1, Bla g 2, Bla g 4, and Bla g 5, would identify 95 % of cockroach allergic patients. More recent studies pointed to an important role of sensitization to tropomyosin among certain populations, an…

Propolis (bee glue) is a resinous, sticky, dark-colored material produced by honeybees. Propolis today, due to its medicinal properties, is increasingly popular and is extensively used in food, beverages, and cosmetic products. Besides its numerous positive properties, propolis may also have adverse effects, such as, principally, allergic eczematous contact dermatitis in apiarists and in consumers with an allergic predisposition. In this study, we found appropriate conditions for removing caffeate esters, which are the main allergenic components, from raw propolis. The proposed method consists

Food induced allergic manifestations are reported from several parts of the world. Food proteins exert their allergenic potential by absorption through the gastrointestinal tract and can even induce life threatening anaphylaxis reactions. Among all food allergens, legume allergens play an important role in induction of allergy because legumes are a major source of protein for vegetarians. Most of the legumes are cooked either by boiling, roasting or frying before consumption, which can be considered a form of thermal treatment. Thermal processing may also include autoclaving, microwave heating…

Protein contact dermatitis is an allergic skin reaction induced principally by proteins of either animal or plant origin. The clinical presentation is that of a chronic dermatitis, and it is often difficult to differentiate between allergic contact dermatitis and other eczematous dermatoses. One distinguishing clinical feature is that acute flares of pruritus, urticaria, edema, or vesiculation are noted minutes after contact with the causative substances. Additionally, the patch-test result is typically negative, and the scratch- or prick-test result is positive. The pathogenesis of protein co

Several major venom allergens from different insects of the Hymenoptera order have been cloned and sequenced by different laboratories. These insects include fire ants, honey bees, hornets, yellowjackets and wasps. These venom allergens have different biochemical functions, but have one feature in common, their varying extents of sequence identity with other proteins in our environment. Our studies in mice suggest that recombinant fragments containing regions of sequence identity of venom allergen(s) and host protein(s) show antigenic cross-reactivity. These studies lead to the hypothesis that…

Experimental and chemical studies in guinea pigs on contact allergy caused by Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Chrysanthemum of the florists) led to the isolation of several sesquiterpene lactones. From the crude extract of dried flowers 12 fractions were obtained of which four gave strong reactions on epicutaneous application to guinea pigs sensitized with an extract of C. indicum L. One of these allergens was identified as a sesquiterpene lactone of the guaianolide type. It is identical to Arteglasin-A derived from Artemisia douglasiana Bess. The occurrence of Arteglasin-A in Chrysanthemum indicum …

Turmeric is the dried rhizome of Curcuma longa Linn which is extensively used in Indian culture. Curcumin is its most active pharmaceutical component. Turmeric use is very closely related with the socio-religious life of the population. Topical application of turmeric is a very common practice in the daily lives and auspicious occasions in South India. However, the allergenic potential of this commonly used spice is mentioned in various case reports and studies. The dermatologists and patients should be aware of the possible allergic reactions of this widely used herb. The purpose of this revi

Venom immunotherapy (VIT) with Hymenoptera venom extracts is highly effective in preventing large local, systemic allergic, and anaphylactic reactions to insect stings. VIT is not required for patients with cutaneous systemic or large local allergic reactions to stings because it is uncommon for reactions to become more severe. The clinical history, with confirmatory skin or serum tests for venom IgE, can clarify the risk for future anaphylaxis and the need for VIT. For initial treatment, rush regimens are recommended because they have the same or less risk of systemic reactions than slower tr
