OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine the prevalence, causes, and associations with amblyopia in a defined older population.
DESIGN: In a population-based study, 3654 persons 49 years of age or older from an area west of Sydney, Australia, underwent a detailed eye examination and history, including objective and subjective refraction, cover testing, and retinal and lens photography. Amblyopia was diagnosed in eyes with reduced best-corrected visual acuity in the absence of any other cause.
RESULTS: Amblyopia was diagnosed in 118 participants, or 3.2% of the population using a visual acuity…

Kittens raised with different kinds of abnormal early visual experience (monocular and binocular deprivation, convergent strabismus, eye rotation, asymmetric alternating occlusion, early callosal split) show systematic deficits in the nasal visual field of the affected eye. To test whether abnormal visual experience produces similar deficits in the human visual system, we measured the monocular visual field of humans with subnormal binocular vision (strabismic and anisometropic amblyopes, strabismics with alternating fixation). Eight amblyopes were tested with a computer-assisted static perime

It is well known that good early management of squint prevents the appearance of functional amblyopia and, when it exists, allows a cure in more than 90% of cases. The authors report a series of 1 552 esotropias. Statistical analysis reveals that the present epidemiologic state of functional amblyopia is dismal. 47% of cases have an amblyopia in spite of 64.6% of children being previously treated. The mean age is 7 years 6 months. The therapeutic results after a 6 months range still shows 38% of poorly applied treatment, but 57% of well-managed patients recover normal visual acuity. The long r…

The critical period in which human visual acuity may be lost after visual deprivation can be deduced by studying children with amblyopia which follows uncomplicated unilateral cataract and the subsequent aphakic blur. The visual acuity at the first contact lens fitting increases linearly on a log scale as a function of the age at onset between 3 and 10 years. Correction before 4 months of age produces less visual loss but we cannot specify the function within this period. If the eye is deprived between 6 and 30 months of age finger counting is the best visual acuity achieved. Deprivation comme…

In a group of patients suffering from amblyopia, the authors confront the results after orthoptic treatment with data provided by functional and electrophysiological examination. In 37 patients the clinical diagnosis of functional amblyopia had been made, but in 8 of these cases complimentary functional and electrophysiological examinations showed organic perturbations. This explains the failure, in these cases, of the orthoptic treatment. In the remaining 29 patients, clinical forms of functional amblyopia were found. In this group, the authors studied 20 cases showing no improvement with tre…

To observe the clinical phenomenon of amblyopia vision improvement in patients with monocular amblyopia over 18 years old after non-amblyopia diseases, analyze the conditions and causes of vision improvement, explore the plasticity of the adult optic nerve, and provide a clinical basis for the treatment of adult amblyopia. A total of 74 patients with monocular amblyopia combined with non-amblyopia visual acuity decline from 2018 to 2021 were collected. The patient's age, initial best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), pattern visual evoked potential examination results, and visual acuity regressi…

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the choroidal thickness (mainly subfoveal) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in amblyopic eyes and to compare it with the choroidal thickness (CT) of healthy fellow eyes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 140 eyes of 70 patients (aged 5-40 years) with strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia were examined using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode in SD-OCT. The CT was measured directly below the fovea and six other locations: 500 μ, 1000 μ, and 1500 μ from fovea in both nasal and temporal quadrants.
RESULTS: The mean age…

Amblyopia is characterized by spatiotemporal uncertainty in the visual system. In addition to its effects on vision, amblyopia also exerts a widespread impact on other systems. Many of these changes are observed not only during amblyopic eye viewing but also during fellow eye and binocular viewing. They generally correlate with the severity of visual acuity and stereo acuity loss. The affected systems include: (1) oculomotor control manifested as abnormal fixation, saccades, smooth pursuit, and saccadic adaptation; (2) motor control with altered programming, execution, and temporal dynamics of…

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is defined as impaired visual acuity in one or both eyes without demonstrable abnormality of the visual pathway, and is not immediately resolved by wearing glasses.
OBJECTIVES: In performing this systematic review, we aimed to synthesize the best available evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of conventional occlusion therapy compared to atropine penalization in treating amblyopia.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Trials Register) (2018, Issue 8); Ovid MEDLINE…

BACKGROUND: Binocular amblyopia treatments promote visual acuity recovery and binocularity by rebalancing the signal strength of dichoptic images. Most require active participation by the amblyopic child to play a game or perform a repetitive visual task. The purpose of this study was to investigate a passive form of binocular treatment with contrast-rebalanced dichoptic movies.
METHODS: A total of 27 amblyopic children, 4-10 years of age, wore polarized glasses to watch 6 contrast-rebalanced dichoptic movies on a passive 3D display during a 2-week period. Amblyopic eye contrast was 100%; fel…

A case of an autistic child, aged 8 years, who reported binocular diplopia following just 2 hours total occlusion per day for 6 weeks for strabismic/anisometropic amblyopia is reported. There was a history of known long-standing reduced uniocular acuity without treatment. Pretreatment Sbisa bar assessment suggested moderate suppression. The diplopia was treated over 6 months including occluding the amblyopic eye and gradually reducing the density of the occluder until fixation with the nonamblyopic eye could be maintained and diplopia ignored. Possible contributing factors are discussed.

The association between congenital facial paralysis and visual development has not been thoroughly studied. Of 27 pediatric cases of congenital facial paralysis, we identified 3 patients who developed amblyopia, a visual acuity decrease caused by abnormal visual development, as comorbidity. These 3 patients had facial paralysis in the periocular region and developed amblyopia on the paralyzed side. They started treatment by wearing an eye patch immediately after diagnosis and before the critical visual developmental period; all patients responded to the treatment. Our findings suggest that the…

Amblyopia is a unilateral or bilateral reduction of visual acuity secondary to abnormal visual experience during early childhood. It is one of the most common causes of vision loss and monocular blindness and is commonly associated with strabismus, anisometropia, and visual deprivation (in particular congenital cataract and ptosis). It is clinically defined as a two-line difference of best-corrected visual acuity between the eyes. The purpose of this study was to understand the neural mechanisms of amblyopia and summarize the current therapeutic strategies. In particular, the authors focused o…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The present study was designed to detect the abnormalities of the cortical thickness in children with ametropic amblyopia by a computer-aided MRI technique.
METHODS: Nine children with ametropic amblyopia and eight age-matched normal controls underwent MRI brain scanning that was performed on a Siemens Avanto 1.5-T scanner, and standard T(1)-weighted high-resolution anatomic scans of magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence were obtained. For the cortical thickness analysis, 3D MPRAGE images were processed with FreeSurfer software package (http://ww…

BACKGROUND: Capillary hemangiomas of the eyelids and orbit can cause refractive and occlusive amblyopia. Although oral and intralesional steroid injections are the most common treatment modalities, sometimes they are not successful. There is a paucity of information in the literature on the success of eliminating amblyogenic factors by treating these lesions with surgical resection.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 10 patients in two pediatric ophthalmology practices who underwent surgical excision of a capillary hemangioma that was causing amblyopia and that had failed to regress with …

Long-term functional results of the eyes with unilateral, congenital cataract operated in the years 1981-1983 are presented. It was found that 88% of the eyes had visual acuity below 5/50. The authors discussed these poor results and considered that they are associated with the lack of effective treatment of amblyopia. On account of this, the authors in their Ophthalmological Department operated only selected cases with unilateral cataract, mostly for cosmetic reasons.
