Amoebiasis is an infection caused by the intestinal protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. It is transmitted via the faecal-oral route and primarily affects the intestinal tract and the liver. It is prevalent in tropical countries but is uncommon in Europe, where it is typically diagnosed in immigrants and tourists from endemic regions. However, an increase in autochthonous cases is being observed in Spain. A case is presented of a 56-year-old Spanish male with no relevant epidemiological history who attended the Emergency Department due to right hypochondrial pain and fever. An abdominal CT scan re

Entamoeba histolytica is a eukaryotic protozoan parasite and is the causative agent of amebic colitis and amebic liver abscess. Many insight … world is a formidable task that is not achievable in the foreseeable future. However, a vaccine for amebiasis could make a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality from the disease. Many components of the ameba are immunogenic and may serve as targets for a future vaccine, including the galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine lectin, the serine-rich …

The detection of Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amebiasis, is an important goal of the clinical microbiology laboratory. To assess the scope of E. histolytica infection, it is necessary to utilize accurate diagnostic tools. As more is discovered about the molecular and cell biology of E. histolytica, there is great potential for further understanding the pathogenesis of amebiasis. Molecular biology-based diagnosis may become the technique of choice in the future because establishment of these protozoa in culture is still not a routine clinical laboratory process. In all cases, c…

The procedure used to diagnose amebiasis varies depending on the geographic location of the laboratory. However, in general, the microscopic diagnosis and differentiation of E. histolytica from other intestinal amebae is most satisfactorily achieved when the specimen is preserved immediately and both a concentration and stained smear are examined. The number of additional positive findings achieved by the cultivation of fecal material does not justify the time and cost involved. On the other hand, serology is a useful adjunct to diagnosis, especially in patients with extraintestinal amebiasis.…

Amoebiasis is a widespread disease with high prevalence in tropical countries and environments with poor sanitation. The treatment of either intestinal and extra-intestinal localization of Entamoeba histolytica or encephalic lesions sustained by Acanthamoeba and Naegleria has been the object of a wealth of research. Antibiotics played a dominant role in this field. Their antiamebic activity is due either to direct action on the protozoan and/or inhibition of symbiotic bacterial flora. Presently they still are an important component of the therapeutic armamentarium but they are supplanted as dr

Amoebiasis is usually acquired in countries where the disease is endemic. A case is presented of hepatic infection acquired indigenously. The Authors emphasized the importance of amoebic hepatic abscess as potential cause for delay in diagnosis.

In 11 patients with childhood amebiasis, only two had dysentery. Additional clinical findings included hematochezia without diarrhea (four patients), dysentery with appendicitis (one patient), exacerbation of ulcerative colitis (two patients), and disseminated infantile amebiasis (two patients). All patients with hematochezia examined by proctosigmoidoscopy had colitis. The diagnosis of amebiasis was confirmed by microscopic examination of fresh stool specimens, pathologic findings, and/or serologic titers. Amebiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of infants and children wi…

The thoracic complications of amebiasis frequently necessitate surgical intervention. Experience with 28 patients is presented. Involvement included the pleura in 19 patients, the lungs in 10, and the pericardium in five. In 25%, more than one site was involved. Treatment consisted of measures designed to obliterate the pleural space or widely drain the pericardial sac, as indicated. Concurrent drainage of the associated amebic liver abscess was done in half the cases. The mortality rate was 36%, generally related to the poor general condition of the patients and their delay in seeking hospita…

E. histolytica tissue invasion induces IgG and IgM and probably IgA serum antibody formation of different types in the intestinal mucosa. 21 children with intestinal invasive amebiasis were studied. Samples were taken from peripheral blood and stools during diagnostic studies and three weeks later. Contraimmunoelectrophoretic antibody determinations and indirect hemagglutination tests IH were made in an attempt to demonstrate its true nature. During the acute phase (first sample), results showed antibodies against amoeba in stools by CIE in 57 per cent and by IH in 80 per cent; in serum, resul…

Report of 2 cases of systemic complications many years after inappercept infection with amoeba histolytica. Amoebiasis being a rare affection in Switzerland, diagnosis was missed and not revealed till operation. One case with multiple liver abscesses, healed after drainage and chemotherapy with metronidazol and dehydroemetine. In the other case with colonic perforation and multiple liver abscesses combined surgical and drug therapy failed, the patient died in hepatotoxic coma. Short cut of clinics and therapy in amoebiasis, pointing out that surgery is reserved for the complications as great l
