The Changing Face of America.

The US population increases yearly and by 2050, experts predict the US population will be greater than 430 million. As the population has grown, it has diversified and includes the largest percentage of multiethnic Americans to date. Accessibility and popularity of aesthetic surgery also have increased. Approaches to rhinoplasty have evolved from a concept of cultural and ethnic transformation to concepts of ethnic preservation, with the goal of preserving features while harmonizing the nose with the rest of the face. To achieve this goal thoughtful consultation and consideration of the patien

Coccidioidomycosis in Latin America.

Coccidioidomycosis is a highly prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America and has been reported (human and zoonotic cases) in México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. The incidence of coccidioidomycosis in Latin America is unknown due to lack of clinical awareness and limited access to laboratory diagnosis. Coccidioidomycosis is as prevalent in Mexico as in the endemic regions of the United States. The number of cases reported in Brazil and Argentina has progressively increased during the last decade, including areas that were not considered

[Travellers to South America].

The geography, tourist attractions and the multiple sites of historical and cultural interest make South America as an important destination chosen by travelers. The continent has a wide climatic variation from north to south, making exposure to risk different between the tropics and the temperate or cold regions. In the countries of tropical South America, the greatest risk is associated with the possibility of acquiring vector-borne diseases, like yellow fever, dengue, malaria and leishmaniasis. The risk of acquiring traveler's diarrhea and food-borne illness is similar across the continent,

Stroke in Latin America.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality in Latin America, with variable incidence and prevalence throughout the continent reflecting regional socioeconomic differences. In Latin America, uncontrolled hypertension is one of the major causes of stroke, but other modifiable risk factors also play a role, such as heavy alcohol consumption and smoking. Intracerebral hemorrhage and lacunar stroke are more frequent in Latin America than in North America and Europe. There are multiple causes of stroke that are endemic to Latin America, including neurocysticercosis, Chagas' disease, sickle cel

AIDS in Latin America.

The epidemic in Latin America has placed an unexpected additional burden on the health care systems and national economies, already weak and affected by severe problems. Specific regional diseases in addition to common opportunistic infections, and particularly the high incidence of TB, produce a different picture compared with the United States and Europe. Access to ARV therapy is far from being universal in Latin America; nevertheless, some countries are providing HAART to all eligible patients, showing that it is not impossible to improve quality of care for people living with HIV infection

Leptospirosis in Latin America.

Leptospirosis is a common disease in Latin America. Transmission to humans occurs by contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of rodents, dogs, or livestock. Pathogenesis is still poorly understood, and bacterial toxin or virulence factors are probably responsible for many features of the disease. The anicteric form is the most frequent presentation, and its clinical picture resembles influenza or other acute febrile diseases. Icterohemorrhagic leptospirosis, or Weil's syndrome, represents the severe form of the disease. Its clinical picture is similar to bacterial sepsis and mul

The historiography of medicine in America.

What is the state of medical historiography in America? This discipline is now asking new questions, branching new directions and speaking to new audiences. The social and cultural contexts in which medicine moved and moves needs to be an effective integral part of approaching the historical studies. There is today, in the U.S.A., a new history of medicine more problem-oriented and interested in the culture of medicine and in the meaning of medicine to cultural history. This new interdisciplinary field of interest deals with the study of epidemics, seen as causative agents in historical develo

Confirmed cases in humans have been reported from Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. The bacterium has been isolated from the environment in Brazil and Peru. The state of Ceará, northeastern region of Brazil, is the only place where specific public strategies and policies for melioidosis have been developed. We also discuss the urgent need for health authorities in …

Brucellosis in Central America.

Brucellosis is a disease of domestic animals and humans in Central America (CA). Bovine and swine brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus and Brucella suis, respectively, have been identified in all CA countries, while ovine and caprine brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis has been detected in Guatemala. The prevalence of bovine brucellosis is estimated between 4 and 8%, with higher prevalence in dairy herds, with losses calculated at 25 million US dollars per year. National Control Programs based in calf vaccination and removal of the reactors have had little impact in the control of bruc
