Clinical differences between transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) and recurrent transient global amnesia (r-TGA).

Both transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) and transient global amnesia (TGA) are clinically characterized by temporary amnesic symptoms. TEA involves recurring amnesic episodes, while TGA typically manifests as a singular occurrence. TGA rarely occurs repeatedly, known as recurrent TGA (r-TGA), which complicates differentiation, and raises the possibility of overlap between two disorders. Given the effectiveness of suitable antiseizure medications (ASMs) in treating TEA, accurate diagnosis of the initial event is crucial. In this study, We retrospectively analyzed cases of sudden-onset amnesia at

[Transient Global Amnesia in the Reykjavik area].

BACKGROUND: Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is a benign syndrome characterized by sudden anterograde memory loss, that resolves spontaneously within 24 hours. TGA appears without other focal neurological symptoms. The aim of this study was to study TGA in the greater Reykjavik-area. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the medical history of patients with a diagnosis of TGA (ICD-10 G45.4) at the University Hospital in Iceland in 2010-2021. Medical records were reviewed, and information about year and age at diagnosis, sex, symptoms, precipitating events, imaging results and risk factors were c

The complex episode of transient global amnesia.

In most reports, Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) consisted of a single episode of total amnesia. The detailed investigation on the process of recovery from amnesia in the present two cases of TGA indicated the existence of a complex episode of TGA which consisted of a sequence of episodes of total amnesia.

Transient global amnesia: the electroencephalogram at onset.

A middle-aged man experienced onset of transient global amnesia while undergoing an electroencephalogram. No important change in electroencephalographic activity occurred. This case provides evidence against the hypothesis that epileptic discharge is responsible for transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia as a manifestation of transient cerebral ischemia.

Ten patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) associated with symptoms of transient focal cerebral ischemia were seen at the University Department of Neurology, Arhus Kommunehospital in the period 1966-1978. All had either prior to or following the amnesic attack transient ischemic attacks (TIA) in the territory of the posterior cerebral circulation. On admission minor neurological deficits were noted in three and normal findings in the remaining seven. There was no evidence of epilepsy in any case. We studied the course (average, 77 months) and found that three had recurrent amnesic episod

Is Transient Global Amnesia a Network Disease?

BACKGROUND: We evaluated a brain network using graph theoretical analysis and microstructural abnormalities of the white matter in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). METHODS: Twenty patients with TGA and healthy control subjects were recruited, and they underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans. Graph theory was applied to obtain network measures based on DTI data. We investigated the network measures and microstructural abnormalities of white matter using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analysis in the patients with TGA. RESULTS: Measures of global topology were not di

Transient global amnesia in a young child.

Unprovoked and unexplained sudden loss of memory and inappropriate behaviour in a 5 year old child is described as fitting into the clinical picture of 'transient global amnesia'. The likely pathophysiology of this condition is discussed with some support for Fisher's suggestion of 'hippocampal-fornical' dysfunction.

Transient global amnesia and the amnestic syndrome.

Transient global amnesia is an unusual form of the amnestic syndrome in that it is completely reversible in most patients. The etiology of transient global amnesia is poorly understood, although involvement of the medial temporal lobe is most likely. The literature suggests that once an underlying structural lesion has been ruled out, cases can be divided into three groups: patients with a past history of migraine headaches, those who have no obvious underlying precipitating factors, and those with associated neurologic deficits during a spell and risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. Pati

EPIAMNE: A New Scoring System for Differentiating Transient EPIleptic AMNEsia from Transient Global Amnesia.

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a rare cause of acute amnestic syndromes (AAS), often misdiagnosed as transient global amnesia (TGA). We proposed a scoring system—the EPIlepsy AMNEsia (EPIAMNE) score—using quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis to obtain a tool for differentiating TEA from TGA. We retrospectively reviewed clinical information and standard EEGs (stEEG) of 19 patients with TEA and 21 with TGA. We computed and compared Power Spectral Density, demonstrating an increased relative theta power in TGA. We subsequently incorporated qEEG features in EPIAMNE score, together with clinical

Global cerebral hypoperfusion in a patient with transient global amnesia.

We report a 64-year-old male patient with pure transient global amnesia (TGA) who exhibited global cerebral hypoperfusion during an amnesia attack. Initial single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) performed 3 hours after the onset of the amnesic attack revealed diffuse hypoperfusion in the cerebrum, whereas a second SPECT study, 1 month later, revealed improvement of cerebral blood flow. This case suggests that SPECT study is useful in revealing the pathophysiological mechanism of TGA and that TGA attacks are associated with global cerebral blood flow change.

Cerebellar Ischemia Presenting as Transient Global Amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) consists of acute-onset anterograde amnesia and typically resolves within 24 hours. Reported etiologies of TGA include transient ischemia to the hippocampus or thalamus, migraine, venous flow abnormalities, and epilepsy. There are no reports of cerebellar ischemia as an etiology of TGA. A 78-year-old woman with a medical history of diabetes presented to the Ohio State University ER after a period of anterograde amnesia lasting 3 hours. She was alert during the event, but asked the same questions repeatedly. Upon arrival to the ER, she was hypertensive but clinica

Factors determining recurrence in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Aetiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) remains uncertain, though many have been proposed, including ischaemic, migrainous or epileptic pathologies. METHODS: We attempted to determine risk factors for TGA, as well as prognostic factors that may cause recurrence. We evaluated clinical history, family history and magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) studies of 93 prospective patients with TGA. Patients were followed from 2004 to 2016. Fifteen of 93 (16%) patients experienced a recurrence of TGA. RESULTS: Among precipitating events, physical activities inducing Va

Post-concussion Vulnerability to Transient Global Amnesia.

Few studies have investigated transient global amnesia (TGA) in the context of a concussion and the concussion sequelae following TGA. Here we review the case of a 43-year-old male with onset of transient global anterograde and retrograde amnesia 22 days after a sustained concussion. The patient's head CT, MRI of brain, and EEG were reported normal, and the patient regained full cognitive function 8 h after the TGA episode, with no recollection of the conspiring events. Following the TGA episode, the patient experienced notable worsening of concussive symptoms, including headache, head pressur
