Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an emerging tick-borne illness caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and transmitted by Ixodes ticks. Clinical manifestations are often nonspecific, including fever, malaise, and cytopenias, which can delay recognition and treatment. Although thrombocytopenia is common in human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), profound thrombocytopenia is rarely described, and cardiac conduction abnormalities remain infrequently reported. We describe a 73-year-old woman in New England who developed fever, somnolence, acute kidney injury, transaminitis, a platelet nadir of 12 × …

Serologic and molecular evidence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum has been demonstrated in white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus), and deer are an important host for the tick vector Ixodes scapularis. In this study, we describe experimental infection of WTD with A. phagocytophilum. We inoculated four WTD with a human isolate of A. phagocytophilum propagated in tick cells. Two additional deer served as negative controls. All inoculated deer developed antibodies (titers, > or =64) to A. phagocytophilum, as determined by an indirect fluorescent antibody test, between 14 and 24 days postinfec

Anaplasmosis, an emerging tickborne zoonosis, infrequently involves the central nervous system, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profiles of anaplasmosis remain poorly characterized. We conducted a multisite retrospective study of patients hospitalized with anaplasmosis during November 1, 2014-November 29, 2024, in Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA, a hyperendemic region. Included patients had anaplasmosis confirmed by PCR on blood samples, exhibited neurologic symptoms, and had lumbar puncture procedures. Ten hospitalized patients met inclusion criteria, 6 with meningitis, 3 with meningoencephalitis,…

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of chronic Anaplasma marginale infection in beef bulls from eastern Kansas and compare breeding soundness parameters between A marginale-infected and uninfected bulls. We hypothesized that bulls with chronic anaplasmosis would have inferior breeding soundness exam (BSE) outcomes as a result of persistent A marginale infection or the consequence of initial clinical disease compared to uninfected bulls.
ANIMALS: 535 client-owned beef bulls from eastern Kansas undergoing routine BSE.
METHODS: Complete BSEs were conducted by…

Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are tick-borne pathogens that cause significant economic loss in small ruminants. Despite having larger population of small ruminants, Tanzania has limited information about the presence and distribution of these bacteria and their vectors. This study investigated ticks’ prevalence, control methods, and infection rates of A. ovis and A. phagocytophilum in small ruminants from Eastern Tanzania. Out of 223 animals sampled, 87.6% were infested by ticks, and the prevalence did not vary significantly among sheep (86.9%, n = 53) and goats (90.1%, n = 146)

BACKGROUND: Human granulocytotropic anaplasmosis (HGA), caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (HME), caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, are tick-borne zoonoses. The vast majority of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections reported worldwide are from the United States. Ehrlichia chaffeensis infections are reported exclusively from North America, with the majority reported from the United States. We have recently summarized the available data on HGA and HME in the form of two systematic reviews. We compared data from these two systematic reviews to objectify diffe…

To assess the value of clinical definitions for human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) epidemiological, clinical and laboratory findings in 50 adult patients with proven HGA (Anaplasma phagocytophilum isolated from blood, and/or positive PCR result, and/or seroconversion or ≥4-fold change in serum IFA antibody titres to A. phagocytophilum) and 46 patients with probable HGA (demonstration of serum antibodies to A. phagocytophilum in titres ≥1:256) were compared. Patients with proven HGA were older (55 versus 43.5 years; p = 0.001), were more often treated with doxycycline (31/50, 62% versus 11/4…

OBJECTIVES: Tick-borne diseases represent an increasing public health concern worldwide, including human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). HGA is gaining relevance in travel medicine due to its expanding geographic distribution. Its true incidence remains unknown, largely due to underreporting and diagnostic challenges. HGA manifests itself by nonspecific symptoms and may be misdiagnosed as another tick-borne disease. This study aimed to direct focus on clinical manifestations of this disease and to examine the role of co-infection with other tick-borne pathogens on its clinical manifestations …

Canine and human anaplasmosis are tick-borne diseases caused by the obligate intracellular bacteria, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys, respectively. In veterinary medicine, peptides derived from the immunodominant P44 protein are used to detect antibodies in serological point-of-care tests for anaplasmosis. To inform efforts to develop improved chimeric diagnostic proteins for anaplasmosis, the structure of the predicted surface-exposed domain (residues 151-308) of P44 was determined at a resolution of 1.65 Å. This domain comprises six α-helices and six short β-strands connected …

Anaplasmosis is an emerging infection in the United States and remains under-recognized in many areas including Pennsylvania. Presenting signs and symptoms are often nonspecific, but fulminant infection can occur in vulnerable populations. We present two cases of severe anaplasmosis that progressed to secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). This severe immune dysregulation syndrome has an extremely high mortality, but anaplasmosis represents one of the few treatable underlying etiologies. It is imperative for physicians to recognize this complication and start empiric doxycycline, …

To date, only isolated incidences of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have been reported in Europe. However, entomological studies in Bavaria, Germany showed a prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum of between 2 and 9.5% in the tick vector Ixodes ricinus. In this study we assessed the risk of pathogenic A. phagocytophilum infection after a tick bite in Bavaria. The seroprevalence of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) antibodies was investigated as an indicator of past exposure, seroconversion as actual exposure of participants to ticks. Patients with a tick bite in the preceding…

Human ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are potentially severe illnesses endemic in the United States. Several bacterial agents are known causes of these diseases: Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, Ehrlichia muris-like agent, Panola Mountain Ehrlichia species, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Because more than one agent may be present in one area, cases of human ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis may be reported as "human ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis undetermined" when the available evidence does not suggest an etiology to the species level. Here, we present a brief summary of these undetermined cas…

Bovine anaplasmosis is an arthropod-borne disease characterized by high fever, anaemia and sometimes jaundice. The role of oxidative stress in anaplasmosis has been investigated, but erythrocyte arginase (ARG) activity has not been studied. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in haematological parameters, erythrocyte ARG activity, plasma nitric oxide (NO) levels and oxidative stress parameters and explain the relationship between each other in cattle with anaplasmosis. The material of this study consisted of 14 cattle, aged 10-12 months with anaplasmosis (infected group) and 14 …
