George Macaulay: A short biography and his place in the history of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

George Macaulay (1716-1766) was a Scot admired for his work as an obstetric physician, philanthropist, author, and feminist, but whom history has largely forgotten. In a time rampant with misogyny, Macaulay empathized with women, discouraged sexism within institutions, and contributed to the training of midwives. He spent much of his career working at the British Lying-in Hospital in London. Perhaps most importantly, he worked tirelessly for this hospital, contributed to various medical innovations, and reported several medical cases throughout his career, including that of congenital diaphrag

Cadaveric Case Report of Pelvic and Abdominal Anatomy in an Individual With a Müllerian Duct Anomaly.

Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) are a congenital abnormality of the paramesonephric ducts that result in malformation of the uterus, cervix, … ding of the types of MDAs and to increase anatomical understanding of the condition. This will help anatomists and students of anatomy identify MDAs during dissection, which will ultimately help physicians more appropriately counsel future patients in reproductive health and direct them to appropriate treatment.

Mechanisms of AV node modulation in AV node reentry tachycardia.

Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia has been recognized for many years as a very common cause of supraventricular tachycardia. First curable by surgery, this tachycardia is now successfully approached by selective radiofrequency current application to the slow pathway of the reentrant circuit. Importantly, these curative treatments brought evidence that the reentrant circuit of this arrhythmia was not confined to the compact atrioventricular (AV) node. These findings stimulate anatomists and basic and clinical electrophysiologists to fundamentally reconsider the atrioventricular junct…

[Advances in mechanisms of Meckel's cartilage development and degeneration].

Meckel's cartilage (MC) was first delineated in 1820 by the German anatomist Johann Friedrich Meckel the Younger through his examination of human embryos. During early development, MC functions as a supportive structure for the mandible and serves as a template for the subsequent formation of the jaw bones. Ultimately, MC transforms into either skeletal tissue, ligaments, or completely resorbs, integrating with the continuously developing osseous structures. This review elucidates the influence of MC development and degeneration on mandibular morphogenesis, delineating cellular processes and k

[The vallecula: an anatomic reality?].

The vallecula epiglottica is a borderline area between the pharynx and the larynx, though covered by the epiglottis, and a functionally strategic site and breeding ground for epidermoid carcinoma, but it has remained unappreciated by anatomists. The borders of the vallecula within the oropharynx are represented by the anchoring systems of the epiglottic cartilage; the basilingual margin is sometimes inaccurate. We would like to emphasize the topographical relationships in the vallecular region, in particular: --the proximity to the base of the tongue, which is the preferred are of extension of…

Challenges in sourcing bodies for anatomy education and research in Ethiopia: Pre and post COVID-19 scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of anatomical dissection in instructing anatomy to medical, dental, and other health science students is indisputable. Ethiopian anatomists encountered challenges in obtaining human bodies for anatomy education and research, both prior to and following the COVID-19 outbreak. The challenges intensified during the pandemic, significantly affecting anatomy education in Ethiopia. This study seeks to investigate the sources of bodies for anatomy, spanning the periods before and after COVID-19, with a particular focus on identifying the primary challenges associated with so…

A comprehensive review of the "supracondylar process" with translation of Adachi.

The supracondylar process is a nonpathological projection from the distal humerus that in some patients, can result in compression of regional neurovascular structures, for example, median nerve. Since the first description of the supracondylar process in 1818, it has also been a focus of anthropological study because of its possible relevance to human origins and relationships to other species. Although its overall incidence is low, it is more common in races of European descent. It is particularly interesting for anatomists and anthropologists, but knowledge of its anatomical relationships a…

A special anatomic preparation for teaching central venous catheterization.

Catheterization of the subclavian and internal jugular veins is a commonly performed procedure for monitoring the hemodynamic, respiratory, … ation attempts. Workshop preparation and teaching sessions benefit from close collaboration between anatomists and clinicians. This should help standardize residents' exposure to central venous cannulation techniques and ensure basic procedure skills prior to actual cannulation in patients.

A historical perspective on the discovery of the accessory duct of the pancreas, the ampulla 'of Vater' and pancreas divisum.

The discovery of the accessory duct of the pancreas is usually ascribed to Giovanni Domenico Santorini (1681-1737), after whom this structur … er') had all been observed and the observations published during the 17th century by at least seven anatomists before Santorini, Vater, and Hyrtl. I further suggest, in the light of frequent anatomical misattributions in common usage, that anatomical structures be referred to only by their proper anatomical names.

[Neural control of saliva secretion. Review of questions on special neurosecretory functions of the facial nerve].

Fifty years ago, anatomists and physiologists still held the opinion that the N. facialis had a purely motor fuction without any sensory or secretory components. With respect to the previously only occasionally mentioned possibility of an additional neurosecretory function of the N. facialis, clinical and experimental, especially neurophysiological research and experiences of the last five decades have however led to results which are being discussed under particular consideration of the neural control of salivary secretion. In this connection, side-functions are discussed that are just appear…

Sphincter of Oddi Function and Risk Factors for Dysfunction.

The sphincter of Oddi (SO) is a smooth muscle valve regulating the flow of biliary and pancreatic secretions into the duodenum, initially described in 1887 by the Italian anatomist, Ruggero Oddi. SO dysfunction (SOD) is a broad term referring to numerous biliary, pancreatic, and hepatic disorders resulting from spasms, strictures, and relaxation of this valve at inappropriate times. This review brings attention to various factors that may increase the risk of SOD, including but not limited to: cholecystectomy, opiates, and alcohol. Lack of proper recognition and treatment of SOD may be associa

[Transverse abdominal plane - anatomical and clinical aspects].

In medicine spectacular progress can be observed at many stages, which sometimes requires the redefinition of already known anatomical struc … se abdominal plane, there has been a growing interest not only expressed by anaesthetists, but also anatomists who wish to explore new anatomical aspects of this plane. It is generally believed that anatomical studies will provide more information on this plane, which can contribute to a wider spread of this pro- cedure among anaesthetists.

Anomalous large unique muscle belly of flexor digitorum superficialis and the absence of palmaris longus in the forearm.

Anomalies of muscles of the upper extremity are frequently encountered and anatomic variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle-tendon unit are frequently reported by anatomists and clinicians. FDS anomalies can be in forms of tendon interconnections, substitution, absence or muscle belly variations and most of the times the anomalies of FDS produce few clinical symptoms. We report a rare and unusual case of FDS anomaly with a unique and large muscle belly. The deformity is type V according to the classification of Elliot et al. in which the muscle belly extends to four digit…

Parathyroid cyst: the forgotten diagnosis of a neck mass.

The differential diagnosis of cystic cervical masses includes cystic thyroid disease or some embryological diseases. Parathyroid cyst is one of the less common causes of the cervical masses. The Swedish anatomist Sandstrom reported the first description of parathyroid cyst in 1880. Up to date, only about 300 cases have been reported in the world literature. They may be functional or nonfunctional, depending on the presence or absence of the hyperparathyroidism and treatment options vary for both presentations. Particularly, nonfunctional cysts are often considered as thyroid cysts. Diagnosis i
