A review of the comparative anatomy of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica) and its relevance to translational research in abdominal transplantation.

This narrative review summarizes and synthesizes the current literature regarding the comparative anatomy of pigs and humans, focusing on organ systems commonly involved in abdominal transplantation with the aim of supporting the safe and effective use of porcine models in preclinical studies. It also integrates practical insights from experimental surgery to highlight key considerations in perioperative care and surgical technique in porcine models. Pigs demonstrate substantial anatomical and physiological similarities to humans, making them ideal large-animal models for transplantation resea

Assessing the Anatomical Accuracy of AI-Generated Medical Illustrations: A Comparative Study of Text-to-Image Generator Tools in Anatomy Education.

Historically, human anatomy education has been an essential part of medical training, depending on cadaveric dissection and anatomical representations. However, financial and ethical limitations have resulted in a decline in conventional teaching techniques, necessitating the investigation of alternative resources such as digital drawings and artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of this research was to assess and compare the anatomical precision of graphics produced by four AI text-to-image generators: Microsoft Bing, DeepAI, Freepik, and Gemini, emphasizing their value in medical education.

Comparative anatomy of neonates of the three major mammalian groups (monotremes, marsupials, placentals) and implications for the ancestral mammalian neonate morphotype.

The existing different modes of reproduction in monotremes, marsupials and placentals are the main source for our current understanding of the origin and evolution of the mammalian reproduction. The reproductive strategies and, in particular, the maturity states of the neonates differ remarkably between the three groups. Monotremes, for example, are the only extant mammals that lay eggs and incubate them for the last third of their embryonic development. In contrast, marsupials and placentals are viviparous and rely on intra-uterine development of the neonates via choriovitelline (mainly marsu

Accuracy of CT-derived interarterial and intramural anomalous coronary arteries anatomy compared with 3D-reconstructed IVUS in-vivo reference.

In anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA), coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is the primary tool for anatomical assessment. However, CCTA measurements lack validation against a high-resolution in-vivo standard. To assess CCTA reliability for lumen dimensions and intramural length (IML) in AAOCA, and to validate these against a three-dimensionally reconstructed intravascular ultrasound (3D-IVUS) reference using three additional IML methodologies. A total of 60 AAOCA patients with an interarterial/intramural course underwent both CCTA and IVUS. A 3D-IVUS was constructed and its geomet

High field magnetic resonance imaging is comparable with gross anatomy for description of the normal appearance of soft tissues in the equine stifle.

High field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used for horses with suspected stifle disease, however there is limited available information on normal imaging anatomy and potential incidental findings. The aim of this prospective, anatomic study was to develop an optimized high field MRI protocol for evaluation of the equine stifle and provide detailed descriptions of the normal MRI appearance of the stifle soft tissues, using ultrasound and gross pathological examination as comparison tests. Nine cadaver limbs were acquired from clinically normal horses. Stifles were evaluated ul

Comparative Anatomy of the Trabecular Meshwork, the Optic Nerve Head and the Inner Retina in Rodent and Primate Models Used for Glaucoma Research.

Glaucoma is a heterogeneous group of ocular disorders with a multi-faceted etiology. Although numerous studies on glaucoma using different animal models have been published, it is unwise to simply generalize the results of one model to all glaucomatous situations because of the differences in the anatomy and morphology of animal eyes in comparison with humans'. In this review, we highlight the differences in the trabecular meshwork (TM) tissue, lamina cribrosa (LC) region, optic nerve head (ONH) and the inner layer of the retina in mice, rats and monkeys. In comparison with humans, non-human p

A retrospective comparative study of biliary drainage using balloon endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound for malignant obstruction in patients with surgically altered anatomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant biliary obstruction (MBO) in patients with surgically altered anatomy is challenging, and technical difficulty could differ by the anatomy. Balloon endoscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (BE-ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) are both emerging procedures, and we conducted the single-center, retrospective study to compare clinical outcomes of BE-ERCP and EUS-BD for MBO. METHODS: Consecutive patients with surgically altered anatomy who underwent BE-ERCP or EUS-BD for MBO

Comparative anatomy of the mouse and human ankle joint using Micro-CT: Utility of a mouse model to study human ankle sprains.

The use of mouse models as a tool to study ankle sprain requires a basic understanding of the similarities and differences between human and mouse ankle joint anatomy. However, few studies have been conducted that address the merits and drawbacks of these differences in the functioning of joints. Twenty hindfoot specimens were obtained from 10 male C57BL/6J mice and scanned using micro-CT. The foot and ankle skeletal structures were reconstructed in three dimensions. Morphological parameters were then measured using a plane projection method and normalized data were compared with those of huma

Female Genital Variation Far Exceeds that of Male Genitalia: A Review of Comparative Anatomy of Clitoris and the Female Lower Reproductive Tract in Theria.

A review of the literature on the anatomy of the lower female genital tract in therian mammals reveals, contrary to the general perception, a large amount of inter-specific variation. Variation in female external genitalia is anatomically more radical than that in the male genitalia. It includes the absence of whole anatomical units, like the cervix in many Xenarthra, or the absence of the urogenital sinus (UGS), as well as the complete spatial separation of the external clitoral parts from the genital canal (either vagina or UGS). A preliminary phylogenetic analysis shows two patterns. Some m

Stemless components lead to improved radiographic restoration of humeral head anatomy compared with short-stemmed components in total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Restoring the native center of rotation (COR) in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been shown to improve postsurgical function, subjective outcomes, and implant longevity. The primary purpose of this study was to compare postoperative radiographic restoration of the humeral COR between short-stem and stemless humeral implants by evaluating the mean COR shift between the 2 techniques. Secondary outcomes evaluated were comparisons of COR shift outliers, humeral head implant thickness and diameter, direction of COR shift, and neck-shaft angle (NSA). METHODS: This study was a mult

Comparative anatomy of the paratympanic organ (vitali organ) in the middle ear of birds and non-avian vertebrates: focus on alligators, parakeets and armadillos.

The paratympanic organ (PTO) in the middle ear has been described in numerous bird species, but little is known about the distribution of this presumed lateral line remnant in other vertebrate classes. Here we provide evidence for a PTO in juvenile alligators, and make the first detailed description of its location and relation to ligaments in the reptilian middle ear. The alligator PTO measures about 450 micro m in diameter. The alligator PTO contains hair cells whose cilia extend into a mucous substance within the lumen. The PTO connects though a ligament to the ear drum, suggesting that pre
