Rabies transmitted by common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) has been known since the early 1900s but continues to expand geographically and in the range of species and environments affected. In this review, we present current knowledge of the epidemiology and management of rabies in D. rotundus and argue that it can be reasonably considered an emerging public health threat. We identify knowledge gaps related to the landscape determinants of the bat reservoir, reduction in bites on humans and livestock, and social barriers to prevention. We discuss how new technologies including autonomously-

Tritrichomonas foetus is a venereal disease of cattle that has a clear pattern of adverse reproductive sequela in the affected female, with a carrier state in the bull in which he shows no outward signs. Given sexual rest and symptomatic treatment, the female returns to reproductive viability. In contrast, the male remains infective and is a risk to other female contacts. Prevention of the disease relies on excluding infected males and females from the population of susceptible cattle. Control of this disease requires a plan to identify, isolate, and treat infected females, and eliminate or cu

Fifty-seven genital tracts of regularly slaughtered culled Piedmontese cows, aged 7.4 ± 4.3 years (mean ± SD), range: 2.6-15.6 years, were grossly and microscopically examined. DNA extracted from oviducts was subjected to PCR to evaluate the presence of Chlamydia spp. The 15 PCR-positive oviducts were subjected to Sanger sequencing and showed the presence of Chamydia abortus, with an identity range between 99 and 100%. Nine of the PCR-positive samples belonged to the 24 animals with a normal macroscopic appearance of the whole genital tract (percentage of positive oviducts in normal genital tr

Ciamexon (CMX), a new immunomodulatory compound acting mainly on B-lymphocytes was given orally to 42 NOD mice divided into three sex and litter matched groups (A: 0.3 mg/mouse/day CMX, B: 1.5 mg/mouse/day CMX, C: control) from 7 weeks of age. Animals were followed up for evaluation of diabetes incidence up to 32 weeks of age. There was a tendency for a delayed onset of hyperglycemia in mice of group B up to 26 weeks of age; however no significant difference in the cumulative incidence of diabetes at 32 weeks of age was observed (A: 57.5%, B: 38.5%, C: 38.5%). No differences were found in the

The multiplication and dissemination of Salmonella abortus ovis, a Salmonella serotype which is specific for small ruminants, were studied in 17 culled non pregnant ewes. The virulent strain 15/5, that has previously been used either for the development of mouse models or as an abortion inducing agent in sheep, was injected by the subcutaneous route at a sublethal dose of 10(9) salmonella per animal. In most animals, it induced only transient hyperthermia and pronounced local reactions. Groups of four to five ewes were killed on days 3, 6, 10, and 14 for bacterial counts of their lymph nodes a

Emerging infectious diseases and late-stage cancers demand rapid, sensitive, and deployable diagnostics. Here, we present HOMEBRED (highly sensitive & specific omnipresent multipurpose endonuclease based reliable detection), a CRISPR-based platform capable of detecting human and animal pathogens (viral/bacterial, RNA/DNA) alongside oncogenic transcripts. HOMEBRED advances veterinary medicine by integrating CaSilico, an automated tool that designs crRNAs by identifying conserved, mutant-resistant regions across pathogenic genomes. By combining CaSilico with extraction-free processing, the platf

Vampire bat-transmitted rabies has recently become the leading cause of rabies mortality in both humans and livestock in Latin America. Evaluating risk of transmission from bats to other animal species has thus become a priority in the region. An integrated bat-rabies dynamic modeling framework quantifying spillover risk to cattle farms was developed. The model is spatially explicit and is calibrated to the state of São Paulo, using real roost and farm locations. Roost and farm characteristics, as well as environmental data through an ecological niche model, are used to modulate rabies transmi

BACKGROUND: The mandatory procedures to be followed after official confirmation of an outbreak of category A animal infectious diseases, including highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), is laid down in European and national legislation. Typically, an outbreak of HPAI results in the destruction of the entire poultry population on the affected holding.
CASE PRESENTATION: The presented case reports a deviation from this approach, demonstrating the practicality of partial culling in a highly biosecure, epidemiologically segmented holding. These on-site circumstances together with the specific

Cross-regional animal transportation is a crucial factor in the spatial transmission of brucellosis, and infections occurring during transportation cannot be overlooked. Clarifying the spatiotemporal transmission patterns of brucellosis under animal transportation mechanisms is of great significance for enabling targeted prevention and control of the disease. Based on data from the Xinjiang Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Big Data Platform, we constructed a directed and weighted sheep transportation network. We established a coupled human-sheep metapopulation model for brucellosis that incorpo

Slaughterhouse sampling and examination of urogenital tracts of 499 sows and gilts culled for reproductive reasons from 21 Hungarian herds were performed over a 6-year period. The aim was to estimate the prevalence of different urogenital tract lesions, and to provide sensitivity and specificity estimates for macroscopic and bacteriological examinations in the diagnosis of urocystitis and endometritis. Furthermore, the association between endometritis and urocystitis was assessed. The prevalence of main lesions of the urogenital tract was similar to that reported in other studies. The 'sensiti

Improved knowledge about reproductive patterns and potential in male wolves (i.e., testicular development and size relative to age, pubertal age, and seasonal effects) is needed for evaluation and monitoring of reproductive outcomes in populations. Reproductive organs from 215 male wolves, culled as a result of licensed hunting, protective culling or from carcasses found were examined. The testes and epididymis were weighed and measured. There were biopsy samples collected from the testes and the cauda epididymis for histological determinations if there were spermatozoa in tissues collected. T

In Mexico, urban rabies has been reduced during the last decade thanks to intensive canine control and vaccination campaigns; however, rabies transmitted by wild animals, especially by bats, has been increasing due to vampire bats feeding on livestock. Vampire bat populations has been controlled by culling with vampiricides, reducing indiscriminately other bat species. Hence, bat vaccination for rabies offers an alternative for culling. Nevertheless, available rabies vaccines are not suitable for their use in wildlife from emerging countries. This project presents an alternative for the use of

Investigations of 2 cases of high mortality in cull sows and feeder pigs from a buying station in Ohio and cull sows at an abattoir in Tennessee were conducted at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The animals were presented as weak, lethargic, and some with high fever. Rapidly escalating mortality was reported to be as high as 30-50% within groups at the buying station over 8-10 d, and 30-40% over 5-7 d at the abattoir. Splenomegaly and red lymph nodes were the most consistent macroscopic findings, with scant fibrinous polyserositis observed in one sow. The microscopi

African swine fever (ASF) has been present in Estonia since 2014, and pigkeepers play a major role in controlling the spread of viral infection in domestic pigs. Participatory epidemiology may provide insight into livestock keepers' existing attitudes and compliance with implementing control strategies. By conducting focus group discussions and using participatory epidemiology tools, this study aimed to reveal pigkeepers' knowledge and awareness of ASF clinical signs, transmission routes, and preventive measures. Furthermore, opinions including trust in stakeholders in ASF control, acceptabili

This study evaluates the influence of immunizing lambs with the incomplete S48 strain of Toxoplasma gondii, on parasite dissemination following a live oral challenge with a complete strain of T. gondii (M4). Lambs were culled at 14, 28 and 42 days post challenge. Parasite DNA was detected at significantly (p<0.0001) lower levels in samples from the vaccinated/challenged group (0% in heart and 5.9% in skeletal muscles), when compared to the non-vaccinated/challenged animals (75% heart, 87.9% skeletal muscle). S48 T. gondii DNA was found in muscle or lymph nodes until 42 days post infection, sug

Bovine Johne's disease (BJD) is a chronic, debilitating enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP), with both animal welfare and economic consequences. The detection of MAP in feces is an important measure of transmission from infectious animals through environmental contamination. Therefore, control programs focused on early removal of infectious animals from a herd, combined with management approaches to reduce exposure of susceptible young animals, have a high likelihood of reducing the disease burden. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) tests to detect MAP in feces enable rapi

BACKGROUND: Adult sows spend more than 50% of their time in units for gestating sows. Consequently, the functionality of these facilities is important for their well-being. This project aimed to depict the well-being of loose housed gestating sows in uninsulated buildings by documenting behaviours, aggressions, stereotypical behaviours and treatments/cullings of sows. Sows were fed individually with an animal-adapted transponder technology with four eating cubicles that allowed individual feeding adjustments. Between meals, the sows could choose from occupying themselves in a tent with deep li

Factors influencing early development such as birth weight, nest competition, and the diet received during rearing have been proposed as elements conditioning the future reproductive performance of European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) females. To evaluate their effects, we followed the life of 1513 females from birth to time of death, culling or censoring (animals alive at a fixed date). Between 0 and 63 days of age 353 females died. From the remaining 1160 females, 864 were chosen based on their birth weight to be transferred from the selection to the production farm. At this farm, 431 fem

Zoonotic Salmonella remains a major target of control programmes in European poultry production, yet its economic burden at the animal production level is not well quantified across countries. This study aimed to develop an animal cost-of-illness (a-COI) framework and apply it to estimate the economic burden of zoonotic Salmonella infections in poultry populations under surveillance in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark. The framework combined publicly available epidemiological data, economic inputs, and production-impact parameters to estimate direct tangible costs associated with surveill
