Synchronous uterine leiomyosarcoma and pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in veterinary medicine have markedly prolonged the lifespan of zoo animals. With this longevity, conditions once seldom recognized, such as neoplastic diseases, are increasing. Nevertheless, multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMTs) remain rarely reported and pose substantial diagnostic challenges in veterinary practice. Here, we report the first documented case of synchronous uterine leiomyosarcoma and pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta), underscoring the importance of thorough diagnostic evaluation in zoo animal management. CASE PRESENTATION: A

Toxoplasma gondii among captive wild mammals in zoos in Brazil and Cuba: seroprevalence and associated risk factors.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of worldwide distribution that can infect several species of homeothermic animals. Few studies have evaluated the exposure of captive wild animals to T. gondii. This study involved a serological survey of anti-T. gondii antibodies in mammals kept in Cuba's National Zoo (PZN) and in the Rio de Janeiro Zoo (RIOZOO) in Brazil. The study consisted of a total of 231 serum samples from mammals, 108 from PZN and 123 from RIOZOO. All the samples were subjected to IgG anti-T. gondii testing by means of the inhibition ELISA method and the modified agglutination t

Occurrence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis among captive mammals in the Bangladesh National Zoo.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are protozoan parasites capable of causing gastrointestinal illness in humans and animals. The purpose of this research was to determine the occurrence, genetic characteristics, and zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in captive mammals at the Bangladesh National Zoo. A total of 200 fresh fecal samples from 32 mammalian species were collected and examined for Cryptosporidium spp. using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene and G. duodenalis targeting the β-giardin (bg), glutamate dehydrogenas

Mosquito bloodmeal preferences in two zoological gardens in Germany.

Because they provide a high density and diversity of vertebrate species, small water pools and shaded environments, zoological gardens offer ideal living conditions for numerous mosquito species. Depending on their host preferences and vector competencies, these species may be able to transmit pathogens between native and non-adapted exotic blood host species, thereby causing morbidity and mortality among valuable zoo animals. To determine the extent to which native mosquito species feed on captive and wild animals, as well as on humans, in two German zoological gardens, mosquitoes were collec

Severe whipworm (Trichuris spp.) infection in the hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas).

A 3-year-old male hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) at the Seoul Zoo, Korea, died without any previous symptoms. Necropsy revealed severe whipworm infection in the large intestine. The animal weighed 2.6 kg and had a blood clot at the anus. Numerous whipworms were found attached to the intestinal wall, with their anterior ends embedded in the mucosa. Fecal microscopy revealed typical barrel-shaped, brown eggs of Trichuris spp., with hyaline polar plugs at each end. Histopathological examination revealed the thin anterior part of Trichuris spp. embedded in the mucosal layer and the thick poste

A case of Anthrax in two captive pumas (Puma concolor).

In this study, we aimed to report anthrax cases in two pumas, brought to the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Erciyes University for suspected poisoning upon their sudden death at the Kayseri Zoo, in Turkey. In the necropsy, enlargement and malacia were observed in the spleens. The cut surfaces of the spleens were in extreme red-blackish color. Bacillus anthracis was isolated as a pure culture from both samples which belong to dead pumas. B. anthracis isolates had pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids. Both isolates were found to be sensitive to eight antibacterials tested. This study de

Visceral leishmaniasis in zoo and wildlife.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an emerging zoonosis caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum. Although the domestic dog is the main vertebrate host, many zoo and wild mammal species have been diagnosed with L. infantum infection, especially in endemic areas. There are many available diagnostic approaches, including serological, parasitological and molecular tests. Among wild animals, carnivores and primates are more often clinically affected, with some species, such as the bush dog (Speothos venaticus) being especially susceptible to development of clinical signs. There are also reports and

Feeding Practices and Welfare of Zoo-Housed Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) on a Global Scale.

Since giraffe feeding practices have only been reported for European and US facilities, this study aimed to achieve a comprehensive overview of the current giraffe feeding practices on a global scale, as well as provide insights into the occurrence of oral stereotypies. We conducted a survey among zoos that house giraffes throughout the world. A total of 146 zoos responded and data on 702 individual giraffes were reported. A variety of feed sources were provided in varying proportions. Lucerne hay, fresh browse, (pelleted) compound feeds, and fruits and/or vegetables were commonly supplied as

Acute visceral toxoplasmosis in captive dik-dik (Madoqua guentheri smithi).

Acute toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 2 captive dik-dik (Madoqua guentheri smithi) in the Houston Zoo. Both animals became ill suddenly and died in spite of supportive therapy. Toxoplasma gondii was identified in tissues of both animals immunohistochemically, and antibodies to T. gondii were found in titers of 1:800 or more in both animals upon examination by the modified agglutination rest. The cause of death was considered to be toxoplasmic pneumonia. This is the first report of toxoplasmosis in M. g. smithi.

Identification of Plasmodium relictum causing mortality in penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) from São Paulo Zoo, Brazil.

This study reports avian malaria caused by Plasmodium relictum in Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) from São Paulo Zoo. The disease was highly infective among the birds and was clinically characterized by its acute course and high mortality. The penguins of São Paulo Zoo were housed for at least 2 years without malaria; however, they had always been maintained in an enclosure protected from mosquito exposure during the night period. When they presented pododermatitis, they were freed at night for a short period. São Paulo Zoo is located in one of the last forest remnants of the cit

Systemic Infection by Angiostrongylus vasorum in a Fennec (Vulpeszerda) in an Italian Zoological Garden.

This paper reported a case of a metastrongyloid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a fennec (Vulpes zerda) kept in a zoo in central Italy. The fennec had shown paralysis of the hind limbs, anorexia, weakness and respiratory signs before death. Cardiomegaly and granulomatous pneumonia were the major anatomopathological findings. Inflammatory lesions associated with parasitic larvae were observed in the lungs, brain, liver, heart, spinal cord and kidney of the fennec at histology. A. vasorum diagnosis was confirmed by both morphological and molecular identification of adult worms reco

Leptospirosis on captive wild animals in Latin America.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide bacterial infection, being more prevalent in tropical regions. Human beings, domestic animals and wildlife species are susceptible to a wide variety of serovars. Zoos have a great importance in keeping endangered species, increasing populations and accumulating knowledge on these species. Although some studies describe the occurrence of leptospirosis in captivity animals, a systematic review regarding the infection in these animals in tropical areas has never been conducted. Thus, the objective of this study was to systematically gather and analyze data regarding l

Autochthonous and imported Trichinella isolates in Germany.

The study of Trichinella isolates from wildlife in Germany revealed the presence of Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi in wild boars and foxes. T spiralis was detected in meat products imported from Spain, which is one of the two endemic areas of domestic trichinellosis in the European Union: It was also detected in meat from a grizzly bear marketed in Alaska, and Trichinella nativa was detected in a polar bear from the Berlin Zoo. These results stress the importance of examining for Trichinella live animals and meat products imported to Germany from both EU and non-EU countries. Fur

Zoo gut plastispheres enable pathogen escape and adaptation.

In zoos, intensive human contact and artificial feeding may create pathways for microplastic (MP) ingestion and gut colonization. We hypothesized that ingested MPs form intestinal plastispheres with elevated pathogenic potential and enhanced environmental persistence. To test this, we surveyed feces from 15 zoo-dwelling species and coupled particle characterization, feces-derived intestinal simulations, metagenomic sequencing, and a subsequent water-exposure experiment. Zoo feces contained more abundant MPs than reported for wild counterparts, with fragments predominating and polyethylene tere

Antimicrobial Resistance and Multilocus Sequence Types of Finnish Campylobacter jejuni Isolates from Multiple Sources.

Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined for 805 domestic Campylobacter jejuni isolates obtained from broilers (n = 459), bovines (n = 120), human patients (n = 95), natural waters (n = 80), wild birds (n = 35) and zoo animals/enclosures (n = 16) with known multilocus sequence types (MLST) for 450 isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for erythromycin, tetracycline, streptomycin, gentamicin and the quinolones ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid were determined with the VetMIC method. MICs were compared with MLST types to find possible associations between sequence type an

Systemic and Cardiac Amyloidosis in Captive Celebes Crested Macaques (Macacanigra).

Systemic amyloidosis has been described in many animals and the most common form is reactive systemic AA amyloidosis. However, cardiac amyloidosis leading to heart failure is rare in animals. We now describe systemic and cardiac amyloidosis in two captive endangered Celebes crested macaques (Macaca nigra) at the Singapore Zoo. Both animals were geriatric and had chronic morbidities. Physical examination, radiography and ultrasonography revealed cardiac arrhythmia, pleural effusion, pulmonary oedema and ascites, consistent with cardiac failure. Amyloidosis was suspected and confirmed as type AA

An empirical case study examining effectiveness of environmental enrichment in two captive Australian Sea Lions (Neophoca cinerea).

This case study examined the effect of environmental enrichment on the activity budgets of a male and female Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea) housed together at Adelaide Zoo. Using non-food-related (intrinsic) and food-related (extrinsic) enrichment objects, the study conducted an ABABA (withdrawal) experimental design over a 30-day period (180 hr). The study expected extrinsically reinforcing objects to be more effective than intrinsically reinforcing objects in reducing pattern swimming. The male sea lion spent more than 45% of scans engaged in pattern swimming during the initial basel
