With the view of developing selective transmembrane anion transporters, a series of phosphonium boranes of general formula [p-RPh2 P(C6 H4 )BMes2 ]+ have been synthesized and evaluated. The results demonstrate that variation of the R group appended to the phosphorus atom informs the lipophilicity of these compounds, their Lewis acidity, as well as their transport activity. Chromophoric iridium(III) complex-coated NaYF(4): 20%Yb, 1.6%Er, 0.4%Tm nanocrystals are demonstrated as a ratiometric upconversion luminescence (UCL) probe for highly selective detection of cyanide anion and bioimaging of CN(-) in living cells through inhibition of the energy transfer from the UCL of the nanocrystals to the absorbance of the chromophoric complex. The fluorescence method was used to investigate the effect of inorganic anions, SCN-, I-, ClO4- and Br- on the binding of thyroxine (T4) by bovine serum albumin (BSA). Cyanide detoxification in mammals occurs, in part, by sulfur transfer by rhodanese to form the less toxic thiocyanate. Thiosulfate and nitrite are often used in combination for the treatment of cyanide intoxication. This report shows that nitrite can inhibit the rate of sulfur transfer by rhodanese in vitro. Nitrate, chloride, sulfate, and acetate were also examined as inhibitors. Inhibition by nitrite appeared to be more complex than for the other anions tested.
