Diffusion tensor imaging is a magnetic resonance method which provides quantitative measurements of the directionality (anisotropy) of diffusion. Anisotropy measurements can be used to obtain quantitative information about the microstructural integrity of white matter tracts. In intact tracts diffusion is restricted and directional because water molecules move predominantly longitudinally to tracts. The aim of this study was to measure the anisotropy of diffusion in patients with chronic hemiparesis. We measured in the corona radiata and the cerebral peduncle in 10 patients with a chronic hemi…

Cobalt-(II) metal complexes constitute a versatile platform for investigating how coordination geometry and spin-orbit coupling determine th … ng spin-orbit coupling and significant zero-field splitting, described by axial (D) and rhombic (E) anisotropy parameters. Fits to magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data reveal antiferromagnetic coupling between the Co-(II) ions, with a ratio of E/D ≈ 1/4 and D/k B = 89 K, evidencing pronounced magnetic anisotropy in the system. This behavior is furt …

Most atomic model refinement methods in cryo-EM fit models to the reconstructed density map and effectively treat Fourier voxels as equally reliable. However, the uncertainty in the estimation of Fourier coefficients is highly anisotropic, primarily due to the common variability in SNR in different frequency shells and the distribution of particle images across viewing directions. First-principles arguments suggest that atomic models should be fitted to particle images rather than volumes; this strategy may be computationally demanding. We show that under certain modeling choices, fitting atom

While various factors influence the polarizability of colloidal particles, the concurrent effects of chemical and geometric anisotropy have yet to be quantified. We address this gap by investigating Janus ellipsoids with aspect ratios ranging from 1.5 to 5, which serve as model systems for particles with combined anisotropy. Electrorotation measurements reveal three distinct relaxations due to concentration polarization, induced charge polarization, and the Maxwell-Wagner-O'Konski mechanism. Surface charge, particle aspect ratio, and medium conductivity govern the observed behavior, with condu…

Hall effects, including anomalous and topological types, in correlated ferromagnetic oxides provide an intriguing framework to investigate emergent phenomena arising from the interaction between spin-orbit coupling and magnetic fields. SrRuO3is a widely studied itinerant ferromagnetic system with intriguing electronic and magnetic characteristics. The electronic transport of SrRuO3is highly susceptible to the defects (O/Ru vacancy, chemical doping, ion implantation), and interfacial strain. In this regard, we investigate the impact of Cr doping on the magnetic anisotropy and the Hall effect in…

Magnetic anisotropy plays a vital role in stabilizing the long-range magnetic order of two-dimensional ferromagnetic systems. In this work, using the first-principles method, we systematically explored the triaxial magnetic anisotropic properties of a ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr monolayer, which is recently exfoliated from its bulk. Further analysis shows that the triaxial magnetic anisotropic properties originate from the coexistence of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (shape anisotropy) and the spin-orbit coupling interaction (magnetocrystalline anisotropy). Interestingly, the sh…

We study the O(2) model with Z_{4}-symmetric perturbations within the framework of the nonperturbative renormalization group (RG) for spatial dimensionality d=2 and 3. In a unified framework we resolve the relatively complex crossover behavior emergent due to the presence of multiple RG fixed points. In d=3 the system is controlled by the XY, Ising, and low-T fixed points in the presence of a dangerously irrelevant anisotropy coupling λ. In d=2 the anisotropy coupling is marginal and the physical picture is governed by the interplay between two distinct lines of RG fixed points, giving rise to…

The corpus callosum has been implicated as a region of dysfunctional connectivity in schizophrenia, but the association between age and callosal pathology is unclear. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) were performed on adults (n=34) and adolescents (n=17) with schizophrenia and adult (n=33) and adolescent (n=15) age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The corpus callosum was manually traced on each participant׳s MRI, and the DTI scan was co-registered to the MRI. The corpus callosum was divided into five anteroposterior segments. Area and anisotropy were calcul…

Fluorescence anisotropy was assessed in tracheal and oropharyngeal aspirates to evaluate its use in the diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome. Samples from 31 neonates at birth were purified by using Sephacryl S-300 column chromatography. After the addition of the molecular probe, 1,6-diphenyl 1,3,5 hexatriene fluorescence was measured and anisotropy calculated. Ten neonates with normal respiratory function had a mean anisotropy (+/- SD) of 0.226 +/- 0.023. Fourteen infants with a diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome had a mean anisotropy of 0.260 +/- 0.014 (p < 0.001). Seven neonat…

Diffusion-based tractography has been used to predict deep brain stimulation (DBS) outcomes in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the predictive value of fractional anisotropy (FA) maps, which can be generated with far less computation, remains underexplored. We retrospectively analyzed preoperative diffusion MRI from 143 patients with PD who underwent DBS between 2013 and 2023. Whole-brain and tract-specific FA measures were extracted and evaluated against the pre-to-postoperative change in levodopa equivalent daily dose (ΔLEDD). Nested regression models compared clinical predictors alone with mod…

High-throughput detection of gene expression changes enables novel biological discovery. However, current methods coupled with RNA sequencing involve higher costs and technological barriers, while gene reporter assays account for only promoter activity. We developed a high-throughput, amplification-free, and accessible method-cellular fluorescence anisotropy of RNA (CFAR)-for assessing the effect of multiple perturbations on the endogenous expression of one or a few genes. CFAR measures cellular RNA levels through changes in fluorescence anisotropy of fluorescent dye-labeled DNA probes. Heatin…

Birefringent crystals are indispensable for polarization manipulation and phase-matching in advanced photonic and optical technologies. However, the development of short-wavelength ultraviolet (SWUV) birefringent materials remains challenging, attributed to the intrinsic conflict between wide bandgaps and strong optical anisotropy. Herein, we propose a density-compensated polarizability anisotropy strategy to overcome this limitation. The linear cyanate anion, featuring a large HOMO-LUMO gap and a small van der Waals volume, is identified as an ideal functional unit and combined with d10 trans…

This article highlights the microscopic origin of the magnetoelectric effect, which could enable crucial control of magnetic properties using electric fields. In particular, it explains the influence of electric fields on the magnetic anisotropy of a Ni(II) complex characterized by significant uniaxial anisotropy and notable rhombicity. Our findings reveal that the electric field's effect on the axial anisotropy parameter primarily arises from atomic displacements, whereas for the rhombic parameter, it is driven by electronic structure changes. While recent observations show that electric fiel…

The precise construction of high-energy catalytic interfaces is often impeded by the thermal inertia of conventional synthesis, where thermodynamic equilibrium leads to the agglomeration of nanostructures and the relaxation of metastable active sites. Herein, we report a strategy of nano-interfacial engineering enabled by shape anisotropy-driven magnetothermal synergy to overcome these limitations. Unlike traditional heating techniques, we introduce NiCo2O4 nanoneedles as active magnetothermal antennas, leveraging their specific shape anisotropy to maximize magnetic coupling via enhanced Néel …

In magnetic pyrochlore materials, the interplay of spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, and geometrical frustration gives rise to exotic quantum phases, including topological semimetals and spin ice. While these phases have been observed in isolation, the interface-driven phenomena emerging from their interaction have never been realized previously. Here, we report on the discovery of interfacial electronic anisotropy and rotational symmetry breaking at a heterostructure consisting of the Weyl semimetal Eu2Ir2O7 and spin ice Dy2Ti2O7. Subjected to magnetic fields, we unveil a sixfold …

Achieving effective manipulation of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy within the coupling of ferroelectricity remains an intricate challenge, yet it is crucial in the electric-field control of the excitation and propagation of magnonic spin-polarization currents. Perpendicularly magnetized structures are normally inhibited to varying degrees in a polarization switching path due to the intrinsic chemical incompatibility of electronic mechanisms for single-phase multiferroics. Here, we demonstrate a geometrically coupling strategy of oxygen octahedral distortions to regulate hybrid improper ferr…

Magnetic anisotropy modulation is central to spintronics. 2D ferromagnetic materials (2D FMs), with their atomic-level thickness, tunable electronic structures, and high sensitivity to external stimuli, provide unprecedented opportunities for precise magnetic control. Particularly, the van der Waals (vdW) gap holds promise for effective magnetic anisotropy modulation. However, the microscopic mechanisms remain elusive. Here, it is demonstrated that epitaxial growth of α-Al2O3/Fe4GeTe2 induces a pronounced expansion of the vdW gap (up to 0.51 Å) at the interface, leading to a robust enhancement…

The regulation of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is key to the development of spintronic devices. As a traditional antiferromagnetic insulator with in-plane spin orientation, NiO films have been widely used for exchange bias and field-free spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching applications. However, the growth of a single-crystalline NiO film with PMA remains a big challenge. In this study, high-quality NiO (111) thin flakes with room-temperature ferromagnetism were achieved by chemical vapor deposition. The growth of the thin (thickness: ∼4.0 nm) flakes highly depends on temperature; as …

Biophysical in nature signals, due to their simplicity in implementation, are at the forefront of research and innovation to control tendon cell function in vitro. In this work, we first assessed the influence of substrate rigidity and surface topography on human tendon cells using differentially crosslinked planar and grooved collagen scaffolds. We identified the 0.5 mM 4-arm polyethylene glycol succinimidyl glutarate concentration as the optimal one to maintain basic cell function. All crosslinked grooved substrates induced bidirectional cell and synthesised matrix orientation, without bring
