Acute anosmia in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

The cardinal features of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are optic neuritis, longitudinal extensive transverse myelitis and area postrema syndrome. Olfactory dysfunction is not listed as a feature in the NMOSD diagnostic criteria. Here, we present an aquaporin-4 antibody positive patient who, in addition to classical features of NMOSD, developed acute anosmia with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of olfactory bulb abnormalities. While the association of anosmia and NMOSD has been rarely noted previously, to our knowledge, no prior cases have found this to be one of the …

Anosmia treatment by platelet rich plasma injection.

INTRODUCTION: Platelets are known for their key role in hemostasis and controlling the bleeding after injury. The fact that platelets secret … lasma administration to the olfactory region could be a promising, last chance therapy for complete anosmia.

Quantitative EEG analysis in post-traumatic anosmia.

Many objective and quantitative methods have been developed to create a procedure or a device to prove, describe and quantify olfactory deficit and anosmia, especially after a head trauma. Electrophysiological testing throughout olfactoelectroencephalography (olfactoEEG) is based on brain activity desynchronisation, and on the subsequent disappearance of alpha activity on the posterior regions after an olfactory stimulus. Yet traditional evaluation of EEG can be difficult, because of little or hardly detectable alpha activity on the posterior regions ('alpha rare'). The aim of this study was t…

The Effect of Topical Aminophylline on Hyposmia and Anosmia.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory training is accounted as a significantly beneficial therapy for hyposmia or anosmia. There is some evidence about methylxanthine usage for this issue. In the present study, we have investigated the effects of topical aminophylline in hyposmic and anosmic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this clinical trial study, patients were randomly divided into two groups (n= 20/each), the case group was given aminophylline drops over a three-month period (using the contents of the vial aminophylline in the form of nasal drops, 250 micrograms daily) with olfactory training and t…

Anosmia in COVID-19: Mechanisms and Significance.

The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 remains a challenge for prevention due to asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic patients. Anecdotal and preliminary evidence from multiple institutions shows that these patients present with a sudden onset of anosmia without rhinitis. We aim to review the pathophysiology of anosmia related to viral upper respiratory infections and the prognostic implications. Current evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2-related anosmia may be a new viral syndrome specific to COVID-19 and can be mediated by intranasal inoculation of SARS-Co…

COVID-19 and anosmia in Tehran, Iran.

Patients with acute olfactory disorders typically present to the otolaryngologist with both acute hyposmia and less often with anosmia. With the onset of COVID-19 we have noticed an increase in the number of patients who have presented with new onset of complete smell loss to the senior author's practice in Tehran, Iran. This anosmia and the frequency with which patients present is highly unusual. Coronaviruses have been known to cause common cold symptoms. COVID-19 infections have been described as causing more severe respiratory infections and the symptoms reported by authors from Wuhan, Chi…

A case of anosmia and hypogeusia as a complication of propofol.

Anesthetics represent an uncommon cause of taste and smell disorders. We describe a case of anosmia and hypogeusia for 6 weeks after recovery from a uterine curettage operation in a 32-year-old woman. The case is unusual because propofol was the only anesthetic used during surgery and anesthesia. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed no abnormality. This case may highly suggest that propofol could induce smell and taste disorders.

[Concomitant anosmia and ageusia: a case report].

Olfactory loss due to head trauma is a frequent finding. It is attributed to the tearing or severing of the olfactory fibers at the cribriform plate. In contrast, posttraumatic gustatory loss is observed and reported rarely and the underlying mechanism is less understood. Here we present a case of a concomitant post-traumatic anosmia and ageusia. Imaging showed a considerable frontobasal brain damage and it is speculated that the gustatory impairment is due to a central injury of the secondary taste cortex. Based on this observation, we believe that this clinical presentation might be much mor…

[A rare cause of anosmia: nasosinusal tuberculosis].

We report the case of a 46-year-old-woman who presented with anosmia and nasal obstruction. Primary nasal tuberculosis was discovered. Primary nasal tuberculosis is very rare. Women are more touched than men. Symptomatology is often unilateral with nasal obstruction, anterior rhinorrhea or epistaxis. Diagnosis relies on the anatomopathologic and bacteriological examinations. The treatment is mainly medical based on antituberculosis drugs. In the light of this case report, a review of the literature was made.

Brain structure is changed in congenital anosmia.

Olfactory function in healthy people correlates with structural features of both the olfactory bulb and higher order olfactory processing areas, but we do not yet know how congenital anosmia affects these latter structures. In order to examine this question closer, we acquired T1 weighted magnetic resonance images from 17 subjects with congenital anosmia and from 17 age- and sex-matched controls. We compared white and gray matter volumes as well as cortical thickness between both groups. We found subjects with congenital anosmia to exhibit larger gray matter volumes in the left entorhinal and …

[Diagnostic orientation and radiological assessment of anosmia].

The olfactory system is made up of the olfactory epithelium, bulbs and tracts, together with olfactory areas in the brain. Anosmia may results from benign and malignant nasal sinus lesions, but also from lesions involving the CNS structures involved in olfaction. The purpose of this article is to review the different diagnose of anosmia and their CT or MR imaging characteristics.
