PURPOSE: To describe neoplasms diagnosed in children </= 28 days of age along with their treatment, associated congenital anomalies, and the long-term consequences of the diagnoses and treatments.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Utilizing autopsy records, a computerized tumor registry, and medical records, we identified patients and stillborns at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) diagnosed with neoplasms at </= 28 days of age between 1930 and 1998.

Anal and rectal cancers were some of the first disease sites treated with brachytherapy due to the anatomic ease of implantation. As external beam radiotherapy grew in popularity the use of ano-rectal brachytherapy declined. A 72-year-old man underwent sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer in January 1999. Histopathological examination revealed a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, tub 2, SS, ly2, v2, N1, H0, P0, M0, Stage IIIa, cur A. A case of giant condyloma of Buschke and Loewenstein is presented. The clinical course and pathology of these tumors are reviewed. This case illustrates the delay in establishing the diagnosis in spite of numerous biopsies. It is emphasized that the only effective treatment is wide local excision.

Dermatologic disorders often show involvement of the (peri)anal skin. However, diagnosis of (peri)anal dermatoses is often difficult even for experienced dermatologists due to delayed clinical presentation or prior treatment with over-the-counter medications. Anorectal manifestations are commonplace in patients with HIV infection. However, standardized or rational treatment of these conditions has not been proposed and many patients are denied adequate treatment based on fear of complications. This review looks critically at the available literature to draw conclusions about treatment, results and complications of surgery for anorectal problems in these patients.
