Methods of estrus detection and correlates of the reproductive cycle in the sun bear (Helarctos malayanus).

The objective was to explore multiple methods for detecting and characterizing the reproductive cycle of the sun bear (Helarctos malayanus). … negatively correlated with parabasal and basophilic cells in cycling females (opposite pattern for appetitive behavior). In conclusion, data for cytology, vulva changes and behavior were consistent with, and complementary to, hormonal data; collectively, they delineated estrus and identified specific reproductive types.

Venlafaxine reduces sign-tracking in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Sign-tracking, the behavior of approaching and interacting with cues for appetitive outcomes in classical conditioning, has been implicated in relapse to drug addiction. In this experimental study, we examined the serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor venlafaxine to determine whether it was effective in reducing sign-tracking in an animal model (Sprague-Dawley male rats, N = 35) of sign-tracking using a retractable lever as a conditioned stimulus and sucrose pellets as an unconditioned stimulus. After training, male rats were administered venlafaxine (0, 30, or 60 mg/kg) intraperitoneall

Knowing when to stop: the brain mechanisms of chasing losses.

BACKGROUND: Continued gambling to recover previous losses ("loss-chasing") is central to pathological gambling. However, very little is know … coding conflicting motivational states. Similar mechanisms might underlie the loss-of-control over appetitive behaviors in other impulse control disorders.

Appetite-suppressing effects of urocortin, a CRF-related neuropeptide.

The neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is well known to act on the central nervous system in ways that mimic stress and result in decreases in exploration, increases in sympathetic activity, decreases in parasympathetic outflow, and decreases in appetitive behavior. Urocortin, a neuropeptide related to CRF, binds with high affinity to the CRF2 receptor, is more potent than CRF in suppressing appetite, but is less potent than CRF in producing anxiety-like effects and activation. Doses as low as 10 nanograms injected intracerebroventricularly were effective in decreasing food inta…

Caffeine increases food intake while reducing anxiety-related behaviors.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different doses of caffeine on appetite and anxiety-related behavior. Additionally, we sought to determine if withdrawal from chronic caffeine administration promotes anxiety. In this study, we utilized rodent open field testing and feeding behavior assays to determine the effects of caffeine on feeding and anxiety-related behavior (n = 8 mice; 4-8 weeks old). We also measured 2 h and 24 h food intake and body-weight during daily administration of caffeine (n = 12 mice; 4-8 weeks old). To test for caffeine withdrawal induced anxiety,

[Leptin and psychiatric disorders].

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, changes in appetite and weight were recognized as important symptoms of severe psychiatric disorders. Particularly in the last decade, understanding of the regulation of appetite and weight has made major progress. In this context, the discovery of the adipose tissue hormone leptin, which signals the size of the peripheral fat stores to the CNS, was crucial. In addition, leptin is also involved in a number of CNS networks regulating behavior and thus of great importance for the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Apart from sexual behavior,

[The characteristics and mechanism of onset of abnormal eating behavior due to stress or psychosomatic diseases].

Abnormal eating behavior is characterized by two major categories. One, stress-induced abnormal eating behavior, is characterized by abnormality of degree and frequency of diet, which stands for appetite loss or appetite gain. They are connected with psychosocial or somatic stress and show temporary disorder for almost all the people. The other, abnormal eating behavior accompanied with psychosomatic diseases, is characterized by chronically devastated cognition and behavior of diet, which represents Anorexia Nervosa(AN) or Bulimia Nervosa(BN). The characteristics and mechanism of onset of the

Higher-Order Inputs Involved in Appetite Control.

The understanding of the neural control of appetite sheds light on the pathogenesis of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and obesity. Both diseases are a result of maladaptive eating behaviors (overeating or undereating) and are associated with life-threatening health problems. The fine regulation of appetite involves genetic, physiological, and environmental factors, which are detected and integrated in the brain by specific neuronal populations. For centuries, the hypothalamus has been the center of attention in the scientific community as a key regulator of appetite. The hypothalamu

Blunted Hazard Detection and Enhanced Appetitive Odor Recognition in Risky Alcohol Consumers.

OBJECTIVE: An inability to correctly perceive chemosensory stimuli can lead to a poor quality of life. Such defects can be concomitant with excess alcohol consumption, but a large-scale cohort study linking these effects is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic alcohol consumption on chemosensory function by analyzing data from the 2013-2014 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving 395 participants categorized by alcohol intake behavior: 219 no-intake, 136 light-intake, and 40 risky-intake groups. Salt appetite is suppressed by interference with angiotensin II and aldosterone.

Blockade of central but not peripheral mineralocorticoid receptors, with the antimineralocorticoid RU-28318, reduces but does not suppress salt appetite aroused by sodium depletion in the rat. When central mineralocorticoid blockade is combined with captopril treatment to prevent formation of endogenous angiotensin II the appetite is completely suppressed. Suppression of the appetite occurred without changes in the animals' spontaneous ingestive behaviors, sodium excretion, or insulin-induced food intake. These results demonstrate that a synergy of angiotensin II and aldosterone is responsible

Melanocortin 4 receptor signaling in Sim1 neurons permits sexual receptivity in female mice.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction affects approximately 40% of women in the United States, yet few therapeutic options exist for these … tin-driven metabolic effects. DISCUSSION: These results implicate MC4R signaling in Oxt neurons in appetitive behaviors and MC4R signaling in Sim1 neurons in female sexual receptivity, while suggesting melanocortin-driven sexual function does not rely on metabolic neural circuits.

Dysfunctions of leptin, ghrelin, BDNF and endocannabinoids in eating disorders: beyond the homeostatic control of food intake.

A large body of literature documents the occurrence of alterations in the physiology of both central and peripheral modulators of appetite in acute patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Until more recently the role of most of the appetite modulators in the control of eating behavior was conceptualized solely in terms of their influence on homeostatic control of energy balance. However, it is becoming more and more evident that appetite modulators also affect the non-homeostatic cognitive, emotional and rewarding component of food intake as well as non food-related rewar

Parabrachial nuclei damage in infant rats produces residual deficits in gustatory preferences/aversions and sodium appetite.

Ten-day-old rats sustained bilateral electrolytic lesions of the parabrachial nuclei in the pons (PBN). Growth measures and tests of sensorimotor, feeding and drinking behaviors, sodium appetite, and gustatory capacities were made between ages 1 and 150 days. PBN rats displayed a transient period of attenuated suckling, as evidenced by body weight loss. When tested soon after weaning, PBN rats were hyperdipsic in response to cellular dehydration and during food deprivation. This effect, however, was temporary. When tested as adults, PBN rats were hypodipsic in response to extracellular fluid v

Parental perceptions of body weight and appetite in infants and toddlers with cystic fibrosis.

Nutritional status has clinical relevance and is a target of guidance to parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Growth is routinely monitored in CF clinics but there is no standardized way of assessing appetitive behaviors or parents' perceptions of their children's appetite. Greater understanding of these factors could improve clinical guidance regarding parent feeding behaviors. We therefore aimed to assess parent perceptions of child weight, and parent reports of child appetite using the Baby Eating Behavior Questionnaire (BEBQ), in a sample of infants and toddlers with CF, compared…

"Dynamic protein changes in aversive taste conditioning: insights from GAP-43 and synaptophysin in memory retrieval and extinction".

Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying the formation, retrieval, and extinction of taste memory is crucial for elucidating learning and memory processes. Using the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) model, we investigated the roles of the amygdala and gustatory cortex (GC), key structures consistently implicated in taste memory. Our study focused on the plastic changes associated with both appetitive and aversive taste memories, emphasizing the importance of extinction in promoting adaptive behavior and counteracting maladaptive responses. Memory processes elicit synaptic plasticity, oft

Delineating anticipatory arousal from reward consumption: evaluating fixed-intervals in cocaine seeking-taking response chains.

RATIONALE: Anticipation is a critical antecedent to drug use, in which the prospect of imminent drug availability can potently motivate instrumental actions directed to procure it. Models that capture the behavioral dynamics that precede drug access may allow for the dissociation of key neural mechanisms underlying appetitive or consummatory processes in drug self-administration. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to isolate measurements attributed to the procurement and consumption of a reward by defining distinct actions for each using a chain-schedule of reinforcement. METHODS: Male Long-Evans rats wer

"What a Girl Wants": What Can We Learn From Animal Models of Female Sexual Motivation?

Sexual motivation is notably different than other motivations such as hunger and thirst, because it lacks homeostatic drive. Sexual motivation poses no threat to physical well-being; individual survival is not at stake. Nevertheless, sexual motivation is a powerful drive and is critical for species survival. Understanding the complexity of sexual motivation has the potential to advance our understanding of other motivations, even pathological motivations, such as those associated with substance abuse. The study of motivation that is unique to females has often been neglected. A number of parad
