This report presents results from a 6-month study over the period 16 November 1986 to 15 May 1987 which was designed to investigate the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in Dammam and Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia. A total of 209 stool specimens from children and 112 from adults with diarrhoea were examined. Only two (1%) of the children, both aged 2 years, were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. Giardia lamblia was found in 13 (4%) cases and was found to be the most common protozoan parasite, whereas Salmonella spp. was seen in 19 (6%) cases. We studied 187 patients attending special educational institutions in Saudi Arabia who were blind before the age of 14. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological evaluation. The visual acuity in 31% of the patients was no light perception and in 58% light perception to counting fingers at 3 feet (1 m). 70% were blind before age 2. Prior to 1962 acquired diseases led to blindness in 75% of the patients. During a survey in 1980-81, 125 of 478 (26.2%) camels in Saudi Arabia were found infected with onchocerciasis. The prevalence rates in local and imported camels were 93/272 (34.2%) and 32/206 (15.5%), respectively. We evaluated 1,400 randomly selected Saudi children in grades 1 through 9 to determine the prevalence of migraine and tension-type headache. Of the 1400 distributed questionnaires, 1,181 (84.3%) were completed properly and so served as the basis for analysis. There were 573 boys (48.5%) and 608 girls (51.5%).
