Detection of Neutral CO Lost During Ionic Dissociation Using Atmospheric Pressure Thermal Dissociation Mass Spectrometry (APTD-MS).

Elucidation of ion dissociation patterns is particularly important to structural analysis by mass spectrometry (MS). However, typically, only the charged fragments from an ion dissociation event are detected in tandem MS experiments; neutrals are not identified. In recent years, we have developed an atmospheric pressure thermal dissociation (APTD) technique that can be applied to dissociate ions at atmosphere pressure and thus provide one way to characterize neutral fragments. In this paper, we focus on the detection of neutral CO resulting from amino acid and peptide ion dissociation. In the …

Determination of chiral sulfoxides in plasma by normal-phase liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

A sensitive and specific assay has been developed and validated for the separation of a chiral sulfoxide drug candidate with simultaneous determination of the corresponding sulfide and sulfone in plasma by normal-phase LC-MS-MS. Separation was achieved on a Chiralpak AD (100 x 2.1 mm) column with a 2-propanol-hexane (80:20) mobile phase within 7 min. Aqueous mobile phase (2-propanol-10 mM ammonium acetate, 75:25) was added post-column prior to introduction into the heated nebulizer interface of a Sciex API 3 plus mass spectrometer, to avoid the explosion hazard of hexane-containing mobile phas

Investigations on the field dependency of proton and charge transfer kinetics in atmospheric pressure corona discharge sources.

Proton and charge transfer are two commonly observed reaction mechanisms in the chemical ionisation of neutral analytes in mass spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry. While those reactions show a strong influence on effective temperature, influenced by the applied electric field strengths, a detailed understanding of the underlying mechanisms under such conditions is still lacking. Using a high kinetic energy ion mobility spectrometer, we examine the reaction dynamics of proton transfer from H3O+(H2O)n and charge transfer from NO+(H2O)m to the model analytes benzene, toluene, and p-xylene

Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Studies of the Martian Atmosphere Over Jezero From Pressure Measurements.

The pressure sensors on Mars rover Perseverance measure the pressure field in the Jezero crater on regular hourly basis starting in sol 15 after landing. The present study extends up to sol 460 encompassing the range of solar longitudes from L s  ∼ 13°-241° (Martian Year (MY) 36). The data show the changing daily pressure cycle, the sol-to-sol seasonal evolution of the mean pressure field driven by the CO2 sublimation and deposition cycle at the poles, the characterization of up to six components of the atmospheric tides and their relationship to dust content in the atmosphere. They also show

The effect of atmospheric pressure on CH4 and CO2 emission from a closed landfill site in Manchester, UK.

A time series study was conducted to ascertain the effect of barometric pressure on the variability of CH4 and CO2 concentrations in a close … essure, their correlations remained insignificant at 95% confidence level. The result revealed that atmospheric pressure--the acclaimed major control on the variability of ground-gas concentration--is not always so. A case was made for the determination of other possible controls such as changes in temperature, soil permeability, landfill water depth, season, and geol …

Continuous-flow carbonyl hydrogenation under subatmospheric to atmospheric hydrogen pressure enabled by robust heterogeneous Pt-Fe catalysts.

The reduction of carbonyl compounds, including ketones and aldehydes, to alcohols is a fundamental and important reaction in organic synthesis. One of the most ideal methods is catalytic hydrogenation, however, the hydrogenation of ketones generally requires harsh reaction conditions, such as high temperature and high pressure. We developed a bimetallic Pt-Fe nanoparticle catalyst immobilized on a composite support of dimethylpolysilane and alumina. Both ketones and aldehydes, including highly bulky and sterically hindered substrates, were smoothly hydrogenated using the newly developed cataly

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Exposure of Polylactic Acid Surfaces for Better Adhesion: Plasma Parameters towards Polymer Properties.

Polymers play a crucial role in multiple industries; however, surface modification is necessary for certain applications. Exposure to non-thermal plasma provides a viable and environmentally beneficial option. Fused deposition molding utilizes biodegradable polylactic acid, although it encounters constraints in biomedical applications as a result of inadequate mechanical characteristics. This study investigates the effects of atmospheric pressure plasma generated by a dielectric barrier discharge system using helium and/or argon on the modification of polylactic acid surfaces, changes in their…

Cell cycle regulation in human hair follicle dermal papilla cells using nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma-activated medium.

Nonthermal atmospheric pressure (NAP) plasmas have recently been developed and have been used for wound healing, blood coagulation, and cancer therapy. NAP plasmas can induce either cell proliferation or cell death, depending on the dose. Due to their efficacy and application easily, plasma activated mediums (PAMs) have been used in human cells recently. In atmosphere, NAP plasmas react with molecular content of air such as N2, O2, H2O vapor, etc, and generate a variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. High reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels promote damage of cellular DNA, proteins, a…

Revealing Plasma-Surface Interaction at Atmospheric Pressure: Imaging of Electric Field and Temperature inside the Targeted Material.

The plasma-surface interaction is studied for a low temperature helium plasma jet generated at atmospheric pressure using Mueller polarimetry on an electro-optic target. The influence of the AC kHz operating frequency is examined by simultaneously obtaining images of the induced electric field and temperature of the target. The technique offers high sensitivity in the determination of the temperature variation on the level of single degrees. Simultaneously, the evolution of the electric field in the target caused by plasma-driven charge accumulation can be measured with the threshold of the or…

Atmospheric Pressure and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Rupture: Results From a Time Series Analysis and Case-Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Associations between atmospheric pressure and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture risk have been reported, but empirical evidence is inconclusive and largely derived from studies that did not account for possible nonlinearity, seasonality, and confounding by temperature. METHODS: Associations between atmospheric pressure and AAA rupture risk were investigated using local meteorological data and a case series of 358 patients admitted to hospital for ruptured AAA during the study period, January 2002 to December 2012. Two analyses were performed-a time series analysis and a case…

Measurement and visualization of mass transport for the flowing atmospheric pressure afterglow (FAPA) ambient mass-spectrometry source.

Ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (ADI-MS) has developed into an important analytical field over the last 9 years. The ability to analyze samples under ambient conditions while retaining the sensitivity and specificity of mass spectrometry has led to numerous applications and a corresponding jump in the popularity of this field. Despite the great potential of ADI-MS, problems remain in the areas of ion identification and quantification. Difficulties with ion identification can be solved through modified instrumentation, including accurate-mass or MS/MS capabilities for analyte id
