Auditory pattern recognition and brief tone discrimination of children with reading disorders.

UNLABELLED: Auditory pattern recognition skills in children with reading disorders were investigated using perceptual tests involving discrimination of frequency and duration tonal patterns. A behavioral test battery involving recognition of the pattern of presentation of tone triads was used in which individual components differed in either frequency or duration. A test involving measurement of difference limens for long and short duration tones was also administered. In comparison to controls, children with reading disorders exhibited significantly higher error rates in discrimination of dur

Persistent auditory hallucinations despite hearing aid use in bilateral sensorineural hearing loss without evidence of psychosis.

Auditory hallucinations are frequently linked to the onset of psychotic disorders, especially when accompanied by delusions or disorganized thinking. However, hallucinations may also arise from non-psychiatric causes. Hearing loss is often underrecognized as a contributing factor, since reduced auditory input can produce perceptual experiences that mimic psychosis. This case report presents a woman in her 50s with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who experienced persistent auditory hallucinations for more than 3 years. She maintained insight, normal daily functioning, and exhibited no othe

Cannabis-Induced Persistent Perceptual Disturbances: A Clinical Characterization Study of Multimodal Sensory Symptoms in 13 Patients.

Cannabis use has been associated with persistent perceptual disturbances, but systematic clinical characterization remains limited, particularly regarding multimodal sensory involvement. To characterize persistent perceptual disturbances following cannabis use, focusing on symptom profiles, temporal patterns, and clinical features. This exploratory observational study was conducted across the Valle d'Aosta and Piemonte regions of Italy between 2020 and 2025. We characterized 13 patients with persistent visual/auditory symptoms following cannabis exposure through comprehensive clinical assessme

Word deafness and auditory cortical function. A case history and hypothesis.

A patient who already had Wernicke's aphasia due to a left temporal lobe lesion suffered a severe deterioration specifically of auditory language comprehension, subsequent to right temporal lobe infarction. A detailed comparison of his new condition with his language status before the second stroke revealed that the newly acquired deficit was limited to tasks related to auditory input. Further investigations demonstrated a speech perceptual disorder, which we analysed as due to deficits both at the level of general auditory processes and at the level of phonetic analysis. We discuss some argum

Cortical Auditory-Evoked Potential and Behavioral Evidence for Differences in Auditory Processing between Good and Poor Readers.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between auditory processing (AP) and reading is thought to be significant; however our understanding of this relationship is somewhat limited. Previous studies have investigated the relation between certain electrophysiological and behavioral measures of AP and reading abilities in children. This study attempts to further understand that relation. PURPOSE: Differences in AP between good and poor readers were investigated using electrophysiological and behavioral measures. STUDY SAMPLE: Thirty-two children (15 female) aged 9-11 yr were placed in either a good read

A Role for KCNQ Channels on Cell Type-Specific Plasticity in Mouse Auditory Cortex after Peripheral Damage.

Damage to sensory organs triggers compensatory plasticity mechanisms in sensory cortices. These plasticity mechanisms result in restored cortical responses, despite reduced peripheral input, and contribute to the remarkable recovery of perceptual detection thresholds to sensory stimuli. Overall, peripheral damage is associated with a reduction of cortical GABAergic inhibition; however, less is known about changes in intrinsic properties and the underlying biophysical mechanisms. To study these mechanisms, we used a model of noise-induced peripheral damage in male and female mice. We uncovered

A Characterization of Central Auditory Processing in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that people with Parkinson's disease (PwPs) may experience challenges in both peripheral and central auditory processing, although findings are inconsistent across studies. Due to the diversity of auditory measures used, there is a need for standardized, replicable hearing assessments to clarify which aspects of audition are impacted in PWPs and whether they are linked to motor and non-motor symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To characterize auditory processes and their possible alteration in PwPs. To address this, we collected a comprehensive set of standardized measures of

The neuroanatomical hallmarks of chronic tinnitus in comorbidity with pure-tone hearing loss.

Tinnitus is one of the main hearing impairments often associated with pure-tone hearing loss, and typically manifested in the perception of phantom sounds. Nevertheless, tinnitus has traditionally been studied in isolation without necessarily considering auditory ghosting and hearing loss as part of the same syndrome. Hence, in the present neuroanatomical study, we attempted to pave the way toward a better understanding of the tinnitus syndrome, and compared two groups of almost perfectly matched individuals with (TIHL) and without (NTHL) pure-tone tinnitus, but both characterized by pure-tone

Comparison of machine learning models to classify Auditory Brainstem Responses recorded from children with Auditory Processing Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) offer a unique opportunity to assess the neural integrity of the peripheral auditory nervous system in individuals presenting with listening difficulties. ABRs are typically recorded and analyzed by an audiologist who manually measures the timing and quality of the waveforms. The interpretation of ABRs requires considerable experience and training, and inappropriate interpretation can lead to incorrect judgments about the integrity of the system. Machine learning (ML) techniques may be a suitable approach to automate ABR interpretation and redu

The Role of the Velopharyngeal Sphincter in the Speech of Patients with Cleft Palate or Cleft Lip and Palate Using Perceptual Methods.

BACKGROUND: The velopharyngeal sphincter (VPS) plays the main role in speech formation. The cleft palate, due to the damage of the soft palate, leads to dysfunction of the velopharyngeal sphincter thus causing speech disorder. AIM: To establish a link between the nasal air escape and the perceptual symptoms in the speech of patients with cleft palate or cleft lip and palate using auditory-visual perceptual procedures for determining the influence the velopharyngeal dysfunction has on speech. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients with speech disorders, out of which 10 have cleft palate or cle

Cognitive aging and auditory information processing.

Over the last decade, much research has been conducted to investigate why older listeners report more difficulty in understanding spoken language than would be expected given their degree of audiometric hearing loss. Of particular relevance to audiological rehabilitation is recent research on older listeners when they are engaged in complex tasks involving the auditory processing of naturalistic signals in realistic social and physical environments Discourse epitomizes such activity. By understanding age-related and individual differences in perceptual and cognitive performance, we gain import

When one is Enough: Impaired Multisensory Integration in Cerebellar Agenesis.

In the last two decades, an intriguing shift in the understanding of the cerebellum has led to consider the nonmotor functions of this structure. Although various aspects of perceptual and sensory processing have been linked to the cerebellar activity, whether the cerebellum is essential for binding information from different sensory modalities remains uninvestigated. Multisensory integration (MSI) appears very early in the ontogenesis and is critical in several perceptual, cognitive, and social domains. For the first time, we investigated MSI in a rare case of cerebellar agenesis without any

Sustained vowels and continuous speech in the auditory-perceptual evaluation of dysphonia severity.

PURPOSE: Auditory-perceptual evaluation of dysphonia may be influenced by the type of speech/voice task used to render judgements during the clinical evaluation, i.e., sustained vowels versus continuous speech. This study explored (a) differences in listener dysphonia severity ratings on the basis of speech/voice tasks, (b) the influence of speech/voice task on dysphonia severity ratings of stimuli that combined sustained vowels and continuous speech, and (c) the differences in inter-rater reliability of dysphonia severity ratings between both speech tasks. METHODS: Five experienced listeners

Auditory agnosia.

Auditory agnosia can be defined as the defective recognition of non-verbal sounds and noises. The clinical picture of this disorder is described and the scarcity of knowledge of auditory agnosia derived purely from single cases is discussed. Next, experimental studies on unselected series of brain-damaged patients, especially designed to clarify the relation of auditory agnosia to aphasia and to the hemispheric locus of the lesion are reported. The results consistently point to the existence of two types of auditory agnosia, a semantic-associative one, specifically associated with lesions of t

Perceptual changes in schizophrenia: a questionnaire survey.

Questionnaires were completed by 73 volunteers with a history of probable schizophrenia, and by 67 patients admitted to the accident wards of a general hospital. A high incidence of sensory distortions was recorded in the schizophrenic group compared with the controls, distortions of brightness contrast being the most common. Many schizophrenic patients reported that such distortions were reduced or removed early in treatment. Patients who reported visual distortions also tended to report visual hallucinations. The results are discussed with reference to the hypothesis that perceptual malfunct

The Audio-Visual Abnormalities Questionnaire (AVAQ): Development and validation of a new instrument for assessing anomalies in sensory perception in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anomalies in visual and auditory perception represent an important aspect of the symptomatic manifestation of schizophrenia (ScZ). However, there are currently no instruments available that allow the assessment of the full range of auditory and visual abnormalities using a self-report measure. METHODS: We developed the 85-item Audio-Visual Abnormalities Questionnaire (AVAQ) to assess abnormalities in auditory and visual processing. The AVAQ was validated in an online-sample of 355 healthy participants to establish the factorial structure, internal consistency and reliability of th
