BACKGROUND: In the past two decades, there has been increasing evidence to suggest that trigeminal neuralgia (TN) may be linked to a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim of the present study was to formally test this hypothesis by comparing the reactivity of the ANS to experimental pain in a population of TN patients and healthy controls.
METHODS: Twelve patients diagnosed with classical TN and 12 healthy controls participated in the study. Cardiac activity was assessed while participants were instructed to rest and again during a cold pressor test (CPT). Heart rate vari…

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the modulation of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmogenesis. Decades of research has contributed to a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of cardiac autonomic nervous system and provided evidence supporting the relationship of autonomic tone to clinically significant arrhythmias. The mechanisms by which autonomic activation is arrhythmogenic or antiarrhythmic are complex and different for specific arrhythmias. In atrial fibrillation, simultaneous sympathetic and parasympathetic activations are the most common trigger. …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates involuntary body functions and is commonly evaluated by measuring reflex responses of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) to physiological and pharmacological stimuli. However, BP and HR values may not sufficient be to explain specific ANS events and other parameters like the electrocardiogram (ECG), BP waves, the respiratory rate and the electroencephalogram (EEG) are mandatory. Although ANS behaviour and its response to stimuli are well-known, their clinical evaluation is often based on individ…

OBJECTIVES: Alarming somatic symptoms and in particular the cardiovascular symptoms, are the characteristic features of panic attacks. Increased cardiac mortality and morbidity have been proposed in these patients. Power spectral analysis of electrocardiogram R-R intervals is known to be a particularly successful tool in the detection of autonomic instabilities in various clinical disorders. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been found to be the outcome of rapidly reacting cardiovascular control systems. The aim of our study is to measure very low frequency band (VLF), low frequency band (LF) a

BACKGROUND: Dystonia musculorum (dt) is an autosomal recessive hereditary neuropathy with a characteristic uncoordinated movement and is caused by a defect in the bullous pemphigoid antigen 1 (BPAG1) gene. The neural isoform of BPAG1 is expressed in various neurons, including those in the central and peripheral nerve systems of mice. However, most previous studies on neuronal degeneration in BPAG1-deficient mice focused on peripheral sensory neurons and only limited investigation of the autonomic system has been conducted.
METHODS: In this study, patterns of nerve innervation in cutaneous and

INTRODUCTION: Despite the high incidence and prevalence of pathologies affecting the autonomic nervous system (ANS), this part of neurology has received very little specific attention in clinical care in our country.
AIM: To present the experience we have gained over a two-year period in an ANS-specific service.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our patients were referred to the ANS service by other colleagues, most of whom were neurologists, between April 2006 and April 2008, after proposing a set of eligibility and exclusion criteria. Clinical history, examination and general analysis were performed f…

Chloride secretion is important because it is the driving force for fluid movement into the intestinal lumen. The flow of accumulated fluid flushes out invading micro-organisms in defense of the host. Chloride secretion is regulated by neurons in the submucosal plexus of the enteric nervous system. Mechanosensitive enterochromaffin cells that release 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and activate intrinsic afferent neurons in the submucosal plexus and initiate chloride secretion. Mechanical stimulation by distention may also trigger reflexes by a direct action on intrinsic afferent neurons. Dysregula

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a common clinical problem, which affects the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. The pathophysiology of GERD is associated with dysfunction of the various mechanisms called "the anti-reflux barrier". Lately, the disturbances of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) have been stressed in the pathogenesis of the different diseases (including GERD). The HRV examination (Heart Rate Variability) seems to be the best non-invasive method to evaluate the disturbances of ANS. The aim of our study was to detect possible ANS disturbances in GERD patients. 23 p…

Peripheral vegetative nervous system state was estimated in 61 patients with constitutional acquired hypothalamic insufficiency by using non-invasive methods. Control group consisted of 10 healthy individuals. Cardiovascular tests application led to the evaluation of subclinical parasympathetic vegetative insufficiency. In was more prominent in patients with early neuroendocrine disorders debut as well as in those with more protracted disease durations. The authors suggest that these findings testify the constitutional acquired character of disturbances. Besides it was also found the conductiv

The authors give an account of recent findings on the modulating action of the autonomous nervous system on electrophysiological properties of the heart and on mechanisms by which the vegetative nervous system participates in the development of disorders of the cardiac rhythm. In the development of arrhythmias, in particular the importance of the sympathetic nerve is emphasized. The relationship of stimulation of the sympathetic nerve and the development of arrhythmias may be conditioned: by its great activity, uneven distribution of sympathetic innervation and abnormal reaction of the damaged

Pathophysiological effects of the autonomic nervous system are clearly seen in young patients with a high cardiac output and borderline hypertension. As the hypertension progresses, there is a change from the hyperkinetic circulation in borderline hypertension to the increased vascular resistance seen in established hypertension. This hemodynamic transition is caused by decreased beta-adrenergic responsiveness and decreased end-diastolic distension of the heart combined with an increased alpha-adrenergic responsiveness of the resistance vessels. In parallel, the sympathetic tone decreases in t…

Twenty-three patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) underwent noninvasive investigation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, as did 23 age-matched controls. ANS function in GTS patients was no different from that of controls, and patients receiving neuroleptic drugs had the same ANS function as untreated patients. All 23 patients later received clonidine and were retested. The ANS values before administration of clonidine were compared with those while patients were taking clonidine. The only significant change (p less than 0.01) with clonidine was a reduced resting pulse …

Variation pulsometry, a method of mathematical analysis of the cardiac rhythm, was used to assess function of the autonomic nervous system in patients with euthyroid and thyrotoxic goiter. Simultaneously orthostatic tests for a selective effect on parts of the autonomic nervous system were done. A total of 46 patients were examined: 16 with nodular forms of euthyroid goiter and 30 with thyrotoxic goiter III. In the patients with euthyroid goiter a moderate degree and in the patients with thyrotoxicosis a pronounced degree of tension of both parts of the regulation system were revealed. At the …

Since autonomic nervous dysfunction is the most common predetermining factor of vertigo, the functional relationship between these two systems was studied using the rabbits. Cervical sympathectomy or electric stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion were given to the animal on one hand, and modulation of the blood pressure and electric stimulation of the hypothalamus were done, on the other. These manoeuvres rarely induced asymmetry of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). However, when other pairs of conditions were combined, such as cervical ganglion stimulation and BP modulation, or sympa

Five physiological measurements were recorded while 20 males Ss listened to a series of tones in two body positions (horizontal and vertical). Half the Ss were tested in the horizontal position, then raised to a vertical position. The other half were tested vertically first. The results showed body position significantly influenced basal levels for heart rate (HR), finger volume (FV), skin resistance (SR) and blood pressure (BP). In the vertical position, sympathetic arousal was higher than in the horizontal position. In addition, the sequence in which a S was tested influenced physiological a
