Rising CO2 and Decarbonization Strategies of Aviation in China in the Coming Decade.

The aviation industry, contributing 2.8% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, faces significant decarbonization challenges. This study examines China's aviation sector, which is expected to become the world's largest market. An integrated model incorporating travel demand, fleet turnover, and technological improvements is developed to project future CO2 emissions. The results indicate that China's revenue passenger kilometers are expected to double by 2035, requiring an expansion to over 8,000 aircraft from 3645 in 2019, with 72% of the current fleet replaced, primarily by narrow-body air…

Photorefractive Keratectomy in Experienced U.S. Naval Aviators: A Prospective Evaluation.

PURPOSE: To report on the prospective evaluation of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in experienced ametropic naval aviators that led to the approval of refractive surgery for military pilots. METHODS: This was the first study evaluating refractive surgery in naval aviators. Return to flight status after PRK and clinical outcomes and subjective and objective flight performance were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 785 U.S. naval aviators were enrolled in the study. Average preoperative refraction was -2.92 ± 1.73 diopters (D) (range: +5.25 to -9.13 D). By 6 months, 85.9% of eyes were within ±

Aeromedical Concerns in Asymptomatic Aviators with Left Bundle Branch Block.

INTRODUCTION: Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is disqualifying for aircrew in the U.S. Air Force (USAF), although outcomes for these patients is limited. We used data from the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine to study this population. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on aircrew with LBBB identified using the Central Electrocardiographic Library database. Analysis included baseline participant demographics, cardiac risk factors, and any available cardiovascular results. Critical endpoints were coronary artery disease (CAD), cardiomyopathy (CM) (left ventricular ejection fraction

The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018.

Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change via a complex set of processes that lead to a net surface warming. Of importance are aviation emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increased cloudiness due to contrail formation. Aviation grew strongly over the past decades (1960-2018) in terms of activity, with revenue passenger kilometers increasing from 109 to 8269 billion km yr-1, and in terms of climate change impacts, with CO2 emissions increasing by a factor of 6.8 to 1034 Tg CO2 yr-1. Over the period 20…

Midair collisions: limitations of the see-and-avoid concept in civil aviation.

INTRODUCTION: Midair collisions cause loss of life and property and undermine general aviation; they also represent failures of the see-and-avoid concept in air traffic control. This study identifies limitations of the see-and-avoid concept. METHODS: Analysis of National Transportation Safety Board data on 159 U.S. civil aviation midair collisions and limitations of the see-and-avoid concept. RESULTS: On average, there were 15.6 midair collisions annually from 1991 through 2000. At least one aircraft was maneuvering in 88% of collisions, and both in 70%. There were 77% that involved arrival …

[Visual tests and their score for selection of candidates to higher aviation schools].

In the majority of countries the requirements to refraction and visual acuity into the distance of candidates to aviation schools are extremely high. However, despite rigorous selection the number of students expelled from aviation schools for the reason of myopia remains impressive and even tends to rise. Aside from high incidence of myopia, this is the consequence of considerable visual loading of students and low-informative methods of examination. Simple and easy accommodation tests, the so-called visual loading tests, were applied to 628 candidates to aviation students. Analysis of result…

Diabetes mellitus: rates and outcomes among U.S. Army aviators.

The U.S. Army Aviation Epidemiology Data Register (AEDR) was queried for Army aviators with the finding of glycosuria, hyperglycemia, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes mellitus (DM), use of oral hypoglycemic agents, or use of insulin for the period 1988-92. The study tabulated the incidence and age-specific annual rates of DM, and tabulated the distribution and reasons for aeromedical dispositions of aircrew with DM. U.S. Army aeromedical planners can expect an incidence of 0.47 cases of DM per 1000 aviator-years per year. Aviators over 35 yr old were at the greatest risk. About 78% of the …

Evaluation of an aviator with chronic disequilibrium, oscillopsia, and central sleep apnea.

A case is presented of an aviator with chronic disequilibrium, oscillopsia, and central sleep apnea. History, physical examination, and special studies are presented establishing a diagnosis of epidermoid tumor at the foramen magnum. Differential diagnosis and relation of findings to the lesion are presented. The aeromedical significance of this case is to reinforce the importance of persistence and the team concept in establishing diagnoses when aviators present with confusing or unexplained symptoms.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery in aviators with recurrent sinus barotrauma.

Recurrent sinus barotrauma in an aviator is difficult to treat successfully. Exacerbations frequently result in marked aviator discomfort, cycles of temporary restriction from aviation duties, or even permanent disqualification for flying duties. Medical management and standard sinus operations are often ineffective, seldom curative, and have a disappointing record in returning the aviator to flying duties. Detailed computerized tomographic scanning of the paranasal sinuses coupled with the functional endoscopic sinus surgery approach directs treatment at the causative pathology. Sinus ventila…

Two case reports of bacterial prostatitis with a proposed treatment for aviators.

Bacterial prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland secondary to a bacterial infection, characteristically having a chronic course with sporadic acute exacerbations. While considered to be the most common cause of recurrent bacterial urinary tract infections in the middle-aged adult male, bacterial prostatitis can be difficult to manage satisfactorily, particularly from the aeromedical perspective. The recurrent infection pattern, common for chronic bacterial prostatitis, has recently been better defined with the localization of the bacterial reservoir as being within the lumen of

A Report of Transverse Process Fractures Secondary to the Centrifuge in a Healthy Aviator.

BACKGROUND: Centrifuge training, while an integral component in pilot training, is not without risks. To date there has never been a reported case of isolated transverse process fractures associated with centrifuge training. CASE REPORT: A 32-yr-old Flight Surgeon underwent centrifuge training as part of an educational course. She had increasing back pain after exposure to the centrifuge. Follow-up studies showed left L2 and bilateral L3 transverse process fractures. No other contributory causes could be identified except for mild vitamin D deficiency. DISCUSSION: The etiology, incidence, an

An aviator with cardiomyopathy and genetic susceptibility to hereditary hemochromatosis: a case report.

A 44-yr-old male pilot was diagnosed with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, possibly as a complication of hereditary hemochromatosis, 8 yr after an acquired left bundle branch block was discovered on a routine ECG. Biochemical testing returned high levels of iron and percentage transferrin saturation, and genetic testing for hemochromatosis was remarkable for a heterozygous H63D mutation in the HFE gene on chromosome 6. Hereditary hemochromatosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis when a patient presents with cardiomyopathy and genetic testing for HFE gene variants influencing iron

Blood-injection-injury phobia in a commercial aviator: a case report.

A small percentage of the population suffers from blood-injection-injury phobia. These individuals can have vasodepressor syncope related to episodes when their phobia is triggered by a stimulus such as the sight of blood or receiving an injection. A case is presented in which a commercial aviator had a vasodepressor syncopal event during flight. She is referred for evaluation. A discussion of the diagnosis, disease, treatment, and follow-up recommendations are included.

Primary idiopathic optic neuritis in U.S. Air Force Aviators.

The records of 31 male aviators seen at the Ophthalmology Branch of the USAF Aeromedical Consultation Service (formerly the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine) for a diagnosis of primary idiopathic optic neuritis (PION) were reviewed. Each subject received comprehensive ophthalmologic and neurologic examinations. The long-term follow-up data were collected through repeat examinations and by survey. Despite 39% of aviators being grounded due to complications of their PION or multiple sclerosis (MS), many aviators diagnosed with PION may be safely returned to flying duties. However, any aviator d
