A patient with rheumatoid arthritis developed hepatic veno-occlusive disease following the use of azathioprine. Although azathioprine induced veno-occlusive disease is suspected to occur more frequently in patients with autoimmune dysfunction, it has not previously been reported as a complication of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism responsible for this condition remains unknown.

Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed in 2 dogs given azathioprine and prednisone. Prednisone and azathioprine had been given as immunosuppressive therapy for pemphigus foliaceus in dog 1 and for polymyositis in dog 2. Azathioprine was discontinued in both dogs. Ureteral obstruction resulting from idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) generally requires a surgical approach sometimes associated with the administration of a corticosteroid. BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is characterised by otherwise unexplained maternal pruritus, increased serum bile acid concentration over 10 μmol/L and spontaneous relief of symptoms and liver abnormalities after delivery. This case report discusses the rare presentation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis in a young patient with moderately severe Crohn's disease managed with low dose azathioprine. CMV pneumonitis was initially suspected on CT chest images and confirmed by PCR for CMV. She was treated with intravenous ganciclovir and later stepped down to oral valganciclovir. Acute erythroid leukemia, also known as acute myeloid leukemia-M6, may be associated with previous chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy. Skin manifestations can herald, co-exist, or follow the evolution of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We report a middle-aged man with recent onset alopecia universalis and a history of intermittent diarrheal attacks for 6 years. Colonscopy and biopsy sampling confirmed ulcerative colitis. Regrowth of hair was achieved by treating the patient with azathioprine and mesalamine. Clinicians have to be aware that a multitude of skin manifestations with history of diarrhea can be an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD such as ulcerative colitis and this warrants further investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies interfere with neuromuscular transmission. Azathioprine (AZA) is an immunosuppressant frequently used for treatment of various autoimmune conditions, including MG. The literature suggests that the rates of AZA-associated hepatotoxicity and myelosuppression in MG are highly variable. A 14-year-old girl with systemic lupus erythematosus presented with a mixed overdose of paracetamol, ibuprofen and azathioprine (1500 mg) following a deliberate self-harm attempt.
