Severe Gastrointestinal Mucositis Following Concurrent Palbociclib and Palliative Radiation Therapy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Palbociclib is an FDA-approved cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor for the treatment of advanced breast cancer. Limited information is available regarding the toxicity of palbociclib and concurrent radiation therapy. CASE REPORT: Herein, we report a case of esophageal toxicity in a patient treated with palbociclib and radiation therapy. A 63-year-old woman was treated with palbociclib followed by palliative radiation therapy. The patient presented three days after completing radiation therapy with severe odynophagia, and dysphagia and was found to have grade 2-3 esophageal ulcer

Severe radiation therapy-related soft tissue toxicity in a patient with porphyria cutanea tarda: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Some porphyrias are associated with cutaneous phototoxicity due to photoactivation of porphyrins, but whether ionizing radiation can have an additive effect is not clear. We report a case of severe radiation therapy-related toxicity in a patient with porphyria cutanea tarda and review the literature. METHODS: A 50-year-old man with porphyria cutanea was treated for lower lip squamous cell carcinoma with definitive radiation therapy. During radiation therapy, acute toxicity was of an expected onset and severity. Six months after treatment completion, he developed skin hypopigmentat

[Radiation retinopathy in patients treated for sinus and epipharingeal malignancies].

BACKGROUND: Radiation retinopathy is vasculopathy induced by ionising radiation delivered by either brachytherapy or teletherapy for ocular and nonocular malignancies. The first signs of radiation retinopathy typically occur a few months to a few years after the exposure to ionizing radiation. CASE REPORT: In the 3 of our patients, changes like capillary telangiectasia, microaneurysms, intraretinal hemorrhages, hard exudation, and capillary nonperfusion showed a clinical picture of macular edema. Two of the patients were suspected of diabetic retinopathy, and 1 patient had optic neuropathy. I

Evaluation of short-chain fatty acid enemas: treatment of radiation proctitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a common complication of abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy; unfortunately, there is no established effective therapy for radiation proctitis. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) have been effectively used to treat a variety of colitides. We sought to determine whether SCFA enemas have a role in the treatment of radiation proctitis. METHODS: Seven patients completed an open-labeled, pilot study to evaluate the effect of SCFA on clinical, endoscopic, and pathological parameters of radiation proctitis. RESULTS: Four weeks of treatment with SCFA enemas resulted in c

Delayed cerebral vasculopathy following cranial radiation therapy for pediatric tumors.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced cerebrovascular injury is a well-known phenomenon. We analyze reported cases of delayed radiation-induced cerebrovasculopathy that present as moyamoya syndrome and/or intracerebral hemorrhage and to statistically analyze the relationship between radiation dose and the interval period between radiation and the presentation of cerebrovasculopathy. METHODS: Patients ages <21 years at the time of radiation were included in analysis. A review of previous publications yielded 77 cases of delayed radiation-induced cerebrovasculopathy consisting of 45 cases of moyamoya s

Radiation-induced fibrosarcoma after breast-conserving therapy for breast cancer: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) has a 10-year incidence of 0.2-0.27% and a poor prognosis, although the radiation should need for breast-conserving surgery. In particular, radiation-induced fibrosarcoma has been rarer, and its incidence is 2.6-3.7% of RIS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman with pT1N1M0 breast cancer underwent breast-conserving surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy 8 years ago, and continued hormonal therapy. She complained of a hard unprotruded mass palpated in her right upper outer quadrant of breast. Although we suspected local recurrence, core needle bi

Attributable risk for radiation in the presence of other risk factors.

Two motivations for studying radiation risk are (1) to quantify the magnitude of risk as an aid to setting radiation protection standards and (2) to understand causality as an aid to assigning compensation for radiation exposed individuals whose disease or death may have been related to radiation exposure. Although it has long been known that radiation risk is modified by factors such as sex, age, and time, it is now apparent that radiation risk may also be modified by other risk factors, such as smoking, inflammation, genotype, and certain pathogens. Even apart from considerations of etiologi

Is radiation therapy for keloids acceptable? The risk of radiation-induced carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Keloids have been treated by using radiation for over a century, and it is currently suggested that keloids are best treated by a combination of surgery and postoperative radiation therapy, although randomized controlled trials testing this are still lacking. However, plastic surgeons tend to avoid radiation therapy for keloids for fear of inducing malignant tumors. Thus, the authors searched for previous reports of associations between carcinogenesis and keloid radiation therapy, and examined the evidence-based opinions of radiation oncologists regarding the acceptability of using

Chronic radiation proctitis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing use of radiation therapy in pelvic malignancy has led to an increase in the incidence of chronic radiation proctitis. The commonest presenting complaint is rectal bleeding. METHODS: A comprehensive MEDLINE search was undertaken for all articles relating to radiation proctitis. RESULTS: The natural history of the disease is poorly documented but improvement is likely in milder forms, with persistence of symptoms in more severe forms. The pathological manifestations of the disease are summarized with particular comparison to acute radiation proctitis. The common clinical
