Forward-masking recovery and the assumptions of the temporal masking curve method of inferring cochlear compression.

The temporal masking curve (TMC) method is a behavioral technique for inferring human cochlear compression. The method relies on the assumptions that in the absence of compression, forward-masking recovery is independent of masker level and probe frequency. The present study aimed at testing the validity of these assumptions. Masking recovery was investigated for eight listeners with sensorineural hearing loss carefully selected to have absent or nearly absent distortion product otoacoustic emissions. It is assumed that for these listeners basilar membrane responses are linear, hence that mask…

Rating the hazard from intense sounds: putting theory into practice.

Basilar membrane mechanics appear to be largely responsible for noise induced temporary threshold shift (TTS). Upon noise exposure, the single fiber loses sensitivity and sharpness. The amplitude and configuration (sharpness) of the basilar membrane vibration pattern is reduced. The "best frequency" changes about half an octave. The result is threshold shift and reduced frequency discrimination. The maximal TTS is generally seen one octave above the peak frequency of the stimulus. There appears to be a critical intensity level for noise exposure. Below the critical level little or no hearing d…

Attenuation of basilar artery spasm after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbit by potassium channel activator cromakalim--a preliminary result.

Cerebral vasospasm associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains a major complication in patients suffering from SAH. Regulation of membrane potential of arterial smooth muscle through activation or inhibition of potassium (K+) channel activity provides an important mechanism to dilate or constrict arteries. The present study examined the effect of a K+ channel activator, cromakalim, on cerebral vasospasm following experimental SAH. By the route of topical application and intra-arterial injection, basilar arteries were exposed transclivally and measured on-line using videomi

Role of Kruppel-like Factor 2 in Intracranial Aneurysm of the Rabbit Model.

We investigated expression of Kruppel—like factor 2 (KLF2) and its correlation with basilar artery blood flow rate in the hemodynamically induced aneurysm model built by different methods. New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into sham—operated group, unilateral ligation of common carotid artery (CCA) group (UL group) and bilateral ligation of CCA group (BL group). Rabbits were cervix—cut to expose the arteries without ligation (sham group), with right—side ligation (UL group) and bilateral ligation (BL group), respectively. Skull Doppler ultrasound was used to mea

An immunohistochemical and electron microscopic study of extra-renal basement membranes in dogs with Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy.

Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy (SHG) in dogs has been employed as a model for human hereditary nephritis (HN), since affected dogs and pa … d dogs. By IF, GPA could be detected only in lens capsule, internal limiting membrane of retina and basilar membrane of inner ear of unaffected and carrier female dogs, but not in affected male dogs. However, eye abnormalities and hearing loss were not present in any dogs, in contrast to their frequent occurrence in human HN. Our findings on extra-renal BM in SHG …

Subarachnoid, subdural and interdural spaces at the clival region: an anatomical study.

AIM: We aimed to show the significance of the anterior pontine membrane as a determining structure between the subdural and subarachnoid space in the clival region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five adult cadaver heads and five cerebral hemispheres were used. The skull vault and hemipheres were removed by sectioning through the pontomesencephalic junction. Five other heads hemispheres were removed but the arachnoid membrane was protected and the cerebral side of the clival dura mater was dissected. In another specimen, the dural porus of the abducens nerve was sectioned for histological evaluation.

Bioinspired Suspended Sensing Membrane Array with Modulable Wedged-Conductive Channels for Crosstalk-Free and High-Resolution Detection.

High spatial-resolution detection is essential for biomedical applications and human-machine interaction. However, as the sensor array density increases, the miniaturization will lead to interference between adjacent units and deterioration in sensing performance. Here, inspired by the cochlea's sensing structure, a high-density flexible pressure sensor array featuring with suspended sensing membrane with sensitivity-enhanced customized channels is presented for crosstalk-free and high-resolution detection. By imitating the basilar membrane attached to spiral ligaments, a sensing membrane is f…

Vesiculo-bullous mucocutaneous disease: benign mucous membrane and bullous pemphigoid.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) and benign mucous membrane pemphigoid (BMMP) are autoimmune diseases characterised by subepithelial bulla formation … uclear leukocyte accumulation. The target antigen in BP is a 180-230 kD protein associated with the basilar membrane of basal keratinocytes. The gene encoding the BP antigen has been partially cloned. It is likely that the same antigen is involved in BMMP, but the mechanism of scarring is not understood. Treatment of BP and BMMP includes systemic steroid and azath …

Otosclerosis and sensorineural hearing loss. A clinical study.

A causal relationship between otosclerosis and sensorineural hearing loss is thought to exist. Forty-nine patients with unilateral otosclerosis were studied by comparing the bone conduction threshold in the otosclerotic ear to the bone conduction threshold in the uninvolved ear. This difference was analyzed using the paired Student's t test, and significant differences were found at 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz but not at 500 Hz. This effect on the higher frequencies may be due to a change in the motion mechanics of the basilar membrane and is greatest at the basal end of the cochlea.

Effects of the BKCa channel activator, NS1619, on rat cerebral artery smooth muscle.

1. We have investigated the actions of NS1619, a putative activator of large conductance calcium-activated potassium channels (BKCa) by use of the patch-clamp technique on smooth muscle cells enzymatically isolated from the rat basilar artery. 2. Using whole cell current-clamp to measure membrane potential, addition of 30 microM NS1619 produced cellular hyperpolarization, moving the membrane potential towards the calculated equilibrium potential for potassium. This hyperpolarization was rapidly reversed by IbTX (100 nM), a selective inhibitor of BKCa. 3. In whole cell recordings made from cell

A model of viscoelastoplasticity in the cochleo-saccular membranes.

INTRODUCTION: Variations in the distensile behavior of the cochleo-saccular vestibular membranes may contribute to lesion evolution of endolymphatic hydrops in Meniere's disease. Such variation may be mediated through membrane viscoelastoplasticity. This feature may provide insight into the distensile process at work in these membranes. HYPOTHESIS: A precipitated collagen matrix can provide a suitable in vitro model of viscoelastoplasticity in cochleo-saccular vestibular membranes. METHODS: An in vitro extra-cellular matrix of precipitated collagen was evaluated as a model of suspected visco

Round window membrane and labyrinthine pathological changes: an overview.

The round window membrane is considered the most likely pathway from the middle to the inner ear. Various substances placed in the middle ear have been seen to pass through the round window membrane. Once toxic substances or inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and nitric oxide enter the inner ear, various inner ear sequelae such as labyrinthitis, endolymphatic hydrops, sensorineural hearing loss or more insidious diseases can occur.

Ionic mechanism for contractile response to hyposmotic challenge in canine basilar arteries.

A hyposmotic challenge elicited contraction of isolated canine basilar arteries. The contractile response was nearly abolished by the removal of extracellular Ca(2+) and by the voltage-dependent Ca(2+) channel (VDCC) blocker nicardipine, but it was unaffected by thapsigargin, which depletes intracellular Ca(2+) stores. The contraction was also inhibited by Gd(3+) and ruthenium red, cation channel blockers, and Cl(-) channel blockers DIDS and niflumic acid. The reduction of extracellular Cl(-) concentrations enhanced the hypotonically induced contraction. Patch-clamp analysis showed that a hypo

An optically-guided cochlear implant sheath for real-time monitoring of electrode insertion into the human cochlea.

In cochlear implant surgery, insertion of perimodiolar electrode arrays into the scala tympani can be complicated by trauma or even accidental translocation of the electrode array within the cochlea. In patients with partial hearing loss, cochlear trauma can not only negatively affect implant performance, but also reduce residual hearing function. These events have been related to suboptimal positioning of the cochlear implant electrode array with respect to critical cochlear walls of the scala tympani (modiolar wall, osseous spiral lamina and basilar membrane). Currently, the position of the …

Modeling otoacoustic emission and hearing threshold fine structures.

A class of cochlear models which account for much of the characteristic variation with frequency of human otoacoustic emissions and hearing threshold microstructure is presented. The models are based upon wave reflections via distributed spatial cochlear inhomogeneities and tall and broad cochlear activity patterns, as suggested by Zweig and Shera [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 2018-2047 (1995)]. They successfully describe in particular the following features: (1) the characteristic quasiperiodic frequency variations (fine structures) of the hearing threshold, synchronous and click-evoked emissions,

Transvascular in vivo microscopy of the subarachnoid space.

BACKGROUND: The micro-architectonics of the subarachnoid space (SAS) remain partially understood and largely ignored, likely the result of the inability to image these structures in vivo. We explored transvascular imaging with high-frequency optical coherence tomography (HF-OCT) to interrogate the SAS. METHODS: In vivo HF-OCT was performed in 10 dogs in both the posterior and anterior cerebral circulations. The conduit vessels used were the basilar, anterior spinal, and middle and anterior cerebral arteries through which the perivascular SAS was imaged. The HF-OCT imaging probe was introduced

Direct evidence for a key role of protein kinase C in the development of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Vascular contraction is induced by the activation of intracellular contractile proteins mediated through signal transduction from the outside to the inside of cells. Protein kinase C plays a crucial role in this signal transduction. It is hypothesized that protein kinase C plays a causative part in the development of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). To verify this directly, the authors measured protein kinase C activity in canine basilar arteries in an SAH model with (gamma-32P)adenosine triphosphate and the data were compared to those in a control group. Protein kinase C is tran
