BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Traumatic spine injuries are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Kinetic therapy (KT) beds were designed to minimize skin breakdown and enhance clearance of pulmonary secretions by rotating the patient from side to side. However, little evidence exists to suggest that fewer complications occur in patients with thoracolumbar spine injuries (TLSIs) treated preoperatively with a KT bed. We investigated the effect of KT bed use on infectious complications and respiratory failure in patients requiring surgery for TLSIs.

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) relies on an obligate mutualism with the Wolbachia strain wCle to supplement B vitamins deficient in human blood. Using metatranscriptomic and metagenomic sequencing of hospital-collected bed bugs, we found that some individuals also harbor a second strain of Wolbachia (wChem). Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) of the placental bed represents a recognizable pattern of placental injury related to altered uterine and intervillous blood flow. MVM consists of a constellation of placental pathologic findings seen in the maternal decidual vessels, reflecting abnormal spiral artery remodeling, as well as in the villous parenchyma, reflecting abnormalities in oxygenation and flow dynamics in the intervillous space. This review is dedicated to the gross pathology, microscopic pathology, updated terminology, and clinical implications of MVM.

Nail bed injuries are the commonest pediatric hand injuries presenting to the emergency department. If managed correctly, the patient recovers quickly and complications are rare. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to assess the effect of bed rest in hospital for women with a multiple pregnancy for prevention of preterm birth and other fetal, neonatal and maternal outcomes.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (May 2010).
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised trials which compare outcomes in women with a multiple pregnancy and their babies who were offered bed rest in hospital with women only admitted to hospital if complications occurred.

All medico-legal cases of unexpected death during hospitalisation or accommodation in rest or nursing homes, which were investigated at the Department of Forensic Medicine during a 30-year-period, have been reviewed. AIM: To investigate inefficiencies during patients' stay in neurosurgical beds.
METHODS: A prospective audit of neurosurgical inpatients was conducted over approximately 2 months. We recorded the causes and duration of inappropriate delays, defined as actions requiring more that 24 h from initiation until completion.

This study determined the extent of reemerging bed bug infestations in homeless shelters and other locations in Toronto, Canada.
