Previous experiments in this laboratory have shown that transplants of a fetal olfactory bulb into a neonatal rat are viable and that they establish connections with the olfactory peduncle and olfactory cortex. The focus of this experiment was to investigate the anatomical correlates of any behavioral recovery seen in rats that had one olfactory bulb removed along with an immediate transplant of a fetal olfactory bulb. Anatomical details, such as transplant organization and olfactory nerve repenetration patterns were analyzed using a variety of histological and immunohistochemical techniques.

This study investigated the relationship between the pain of sciatic endometriosis and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling pathway. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats successfully received sciatic endometriosis induction. Mechanical paw withdrawal threshold and paw withdrawal latency were recorded to assess the mechanical hypersensitivity and thermal hyperalgesia. Quantitative real-time PCR, Western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to detect PI3K, Akt, and mTOR expressions and their phosphorylation a

Behavior controlled by various schedules of reinforcement is useful for characterizing drugs as well as for analyzing the mechanisms of action of their effects on behavior. Conditioned avoidance techniques have been useful for studying neuroleptics and for predicting their clinical antipsychotic acitivity; the possible involvement of dopaminergic mechanisms in the effect of neurolpetics on avoidance behavior is discussed. Tricyclic antidepressant agents have been studied in assays involving interactions with other agents, such as cocaine, amphetamine and tetrabenazine. One type of operant beha

An inadequate parent-child relationship with hostility, low warmth, and a lack of responsiveness/sensitivity on the part of the primary caregiver often accompanies a child's externalizing disorders and predicts a negative developmental course. The Preschool Five Minute Speech Sample (PFMSS) was developed to enable an economic assessment of components of an inadequate parent-child relationship. In this article we investigate aspects of the validity of the German version of the PFMSS. We analyze whether the PFMSS scales are associated with observed maternal sensitivity, symptoms of attention def

Agoraphobia is the commonest and most severe form of phobic disorder. Techniques presently available for its treatment fall into the broad categories of behavior therapy, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy. Of the behavioral approaches in current use flooding is probably most effective. Group exposure methods are valuable and have the advantage of conserving therapist time. Pharmacological agents of demonstrated value include monoamine oxidase inhibitors (phenelzine) and tricyclic antidepressants (imipramine). These drugs are capable of preventing the spontaneous panic attacks observed in agor

Oppositional defiant disorder, one of the disruptive behavior disorders, has far-reaching consequences for the individual, family, school, community, and society. Early recognition allows interventions geared toward promotion of prosocial behaviors, possibly halting progression to the more deviant conduct disorder. Awareness of this disorder and associated comorbidities is the first step that enables the school nurse to use assessment techniques and to assist in planning of interventions for the child. Children at risk often show tendencies toward oppositional defiant disorder as early as pres

Researchers believe that the development and prevalence of abnormal behaviors in horses may be caused by several environmental and biological factors, and the literature offers numerous reports that discuss the causes and effects of stereotypies in these animals. In this light, this study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the scientific literature, summarizing the main risk factors associated with the development of abnormal behaviors in horses. The searches were conducted over the course of four years in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. The publications reviewed were

A probe technique requiring convergent and divergent semantic behavior and representing five levels of communicative responsibility served as the research tool. Stimuli were presented to 29 asphasic adults (13 Broca's, 7 Wernicke's, and 9 anomic), 26 adults with chronic undifferentiated schizophrenia, and 32 normal elderly control subjects. Within each group significant differences were observed on the semantic task (convergent and divergent) and on level of communicative responsibility. Among subjects with aphasia, differences appeared to relate more to severity than type. Differences between

BACKGROUND: This study compared the effects of the several doses of the opioid agonists heroin and hydromorphone across two routes of administration in humans. The goal was to guide development of human laboratory studies of opioid effects and inform subsequent injection pharmacotherapy trials of hydromorphone-assisted treatment.
METHODS: A within-subject (N = 16), double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, evaluation of acute doses of heroin and hydromorphone was completed at four dose levels (placebo, low, medium, high) across two routes of administration (intravenous, subcutaneous) in

In cancer tissue diagnostic studies of clinical medicine, cell morphology is a key indicator for assessing the behavior of cellular physiological activities. Currently, the method of using thermotherapy as an adjunct to cancer treatment has gradually become a trend. Assessing the morphological characteristics of wound tissue cells during the hyperthermia process is particularly important for providing feedback on the therapeutic efficacy of hyperthermia-assisted treatment. Among the existing cell observation techniques, optical bright-field microscopy can only perform static observations of ce

Numerous publications have documented that the immortal cells grown in three-dimensional (3D) cultures possess physiological behavior, which is more reminiscent of their parental organ than when the same cells are cultivated using classical two-dimensional (2D) culture techniques. The goal of this study was to investigate whether this observation could be extended to the determination of LD(50) values and whether 3D data could be correlated to in vivo observations. We developed a noninvasive means to estimate the amount of protein present in a 3D spheroid from it is planar area (± 21%) so that

Understanding pedestrian dynamics is critical for mitigating crowd-related risks and improving public safety. In this work, we propose a novel data-driven mesoscopic modeling framework that combines the kinetic theory of active particles (KTAPs) with data assimilation techniques, thereby offering a data-driven learning approach applicable to collective systems with learning and decision-making behavior, in line with recent KTAP developments in this area. The framework uses an ensemble Kalman filter to sequentially estimate the time-dependent spatial distribution of pedestrians and model parame

Scientific studies have demonstrated how certain insect species can be used as bioindicators and reverse environmental degradation through their behavior and organization. Studying these species involves capturing and extracting hundreds of insects from a colony for subsequent study, analysis, and observation. This allows researchers to classify the individuals and also determine the organizational structure and behavioral patterns of the insects within colonies. The miniaturization of hardware devices for data and image acquisition, coupled with new Artificial Intelligence techniques such as

The marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus is a main contributor to global photosynthesis, whilst being limited by iron availability. Cyanobacterial genomes generally encode two different types of FutA iron-binding proteins: periplasmic FutA2 ABC transporter subunits bind Fe(III), while cytosolic FutA1 binds Fe(II). Owing to their small size and their economized genome Prochlorococcus ecotypes typically possess a single futA gene. How the encoded FutA protein might bind different Fe oxidation states was previously unknown. Here, we use structural biology techniques at room temperature to probe

Background: Opioid overdose deaths continue to present major public health challenges in the U.S. Harm reduction agencies have begun using drug checking technologies to identify adulterants in the local drug supply and reduce overdose risk among people who use drugs (PWUD). Through qualitative and ethnographic methods, we assess the use of portable mass spectrometers at a harm reduction agency in a Northeastern U.S. city. Methods: We conducted participant observation, and on-the-spot qualitative interviews with harm-reduction staff members (n = 10) and their clientele (n = 17) between May 2019

Biofilms are frequently related to invasive fungal infections and are reported to be more resistant to antifungal drugs than planktonic cells. The structural complexity of the biofilm as well as the presence of a polymeric extracellular matrix (ECM) is thought to be associated with this resistant behavior. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after room temperature glutaraldehyde-based fixation, have been used to study fungal biofilm structure and drug susceptibility but they usually fail to preserve the ECM and, therefore, are not an optimised methodology to understand the complexity of the fun

Multimodal artificial intelligence (MMAI) is transforming biomedicine by integrating heterogeneous data, e.g., images, speech, behavior, physiological signals, and text, into unified representational spaces. This enables powerful cross-modal inference and data synthesis, with potential gains in diagnostic accuracy, early detection, and patient support. However, these capabilities introduce ethical challenges that exceed existing AI governance frameworks. MMAI can infer sensitive information without patient awareness, and can convert such inferences into new data objects (e.g., images, clinical

To observe the expression of drebrin in the distal cerebrospinal fluid contacting neurons (dCSF-CNs) of rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) of sciatic nerve by immunofluorescence technique, male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, sham surgery group and CCI group. The behavior of rats was scored. After choleratoxin subunit B-conjugated horseradish peroxidase (CB-HRP, 3 muL) was injected into the lateral cerebroventricle to trace dCSF-CNs, the expression of drebrin was observed in the dCSF-CNs through immunofluorescence double staining and laser s

A major challenge facing the genetics of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is the large and growing number of candidate risk genes and gene variants of unknown functional significance. Here, we used Caenorhabditis elegans to systematically functionally characterize ASD-associated genes in vivo. Using our custom machine vision system, we quantified 26 phenotypes spanning morphology, locomotion, tactile sensitivity, and habituation learning in 135 strains each carrying a mutation in an ortholog of an ASD-associated gene. We identified hundreds of genotype-phenotype relationships ranging from seve
