Linking intrinsic brain dysfunction to behavioral outcomes in combat-exposed males with PTSD symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to trauma produces abnormal intrinsic brain activity, but its association to stress-related symptom severity is often elusive, and the relationships with co-occurring psychiatric and cognitive changes are poorly understood. METHODS: This study investigated the neurobehavioral mechanisms of persistent disability in male combat-exposed military personnel and veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (CE-PTSD) (n=19) and trauma-exposed healthy controls with similar combat experiences (n=24). Disturbances in intrinsic activity during resting-state fMRI were i

Cognitive, behavioral and psychiatric symptoms in patients with spinal cord injury: a scoping review.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a condition where the spinal cord is damaged and experiences partial or complete loss of motor and/or sensory function, which is typically less than normal. After SCI, patients may exhibit more severe psychiatric symptoms and experience cognitive impairments, including reduced speed and attention processing capacity, as well as difficulties with executive function and episodic memory retention. Among the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms, depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder are the most common. This review aims to investi

Diagnosis of behavioral symptoms as a predictor of institutionalization among Medicaid patients with dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral symptoms are commonly observed in the course of dementia. This study aimed to assess the association of the diagnosis of a cluster of behavioral symptoms (e.g., agitation, aggression, psychotic symptoms, and delirium/wandering) with the likelihood of subsequent institutionalization. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adults aged 65 and above diagnosed with dementia identified in the IBM® MarketScan® Multistate Medicaid database between October 01, 2015, and September 30, 2019, was conducted. The index date was defined as the first diagnosis date of dementia. The p

Gender Differences in Adolescents' Affective Symptoms and Behavioral Disorders After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are considered self-limiting and full recovery is expected. Recent studies identify deficits persisting years after mTBI. Large-scale prospective data permit testing the hypothesis that mTBI increases incidence of affective and behavioral symptoms after new, past , or new and past mTBI. SETTING: The study involved secondary analyses of survey responses from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents in the ABCD Study ( n = 11 869; Wave 1, aged 9-10 years; Wave 2, aged 11-12 years) whose parents reported a

Deficiency Citations on Inappropriate Psychotropics Use Related to Care for Behavioral Symptoms of Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) initiated the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes in 2012, which helped decrease antipsychotics use. However, inappropriate use of antipsychotics and other psychotropic medications to control behavioral symptoms associated with dementia persists. Nursing homes (NHs) can be flagged for inappropriate psychotropics use as a deficiency of care citation (F-758 tag). The purpose of this study was to comprehensively explore inappropriate psychotropic medication use deficiency, F-758 citations, in caring for NH resident

The Clinical value of brain-gut behavioral therapies for functional esophageal disorders and symptoms.

Functional esophageal disorders (functional chest pain, functional heartburn, reflux hypersensitivity, globus, and functional dysphagia) are the disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBI) and present with esophageal symptoms not associated with a structural, major motility or underlying inflammatory condition. Notably, many patients with the latter conditions may still experience esophageal symptoms beyond what could be attributed to their underlying disorders. Esophageal visceral hypersensitivity and hypervigilance are the two pathways which drive functional esophageal disorders and symptoms.

Acupuncture for Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Dementia is an important health issue worldwide, and non-pharmacological strategies for the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are considered to be important. This review analyzes the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for BPSD. Thirteen electronic databases were comprehensively searched to find clinical studies using acupuncture on BPSD, published up to December 2020. Five randomized controlled clinical trials and two before-after studies, mainly on Alzheimer's disease (AD), were included. Meta-analysis suggested that the total effective rate based on

Developmental-behavioral profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring gastrointestinal symptoms.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently reported in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We evaluated the frequency and severity of GI symptoms in preschool-aged children with ASD compared to participants with typical development (TD). Our goal was to ascertain whether GI symptoms are associated with differences in sex or developmental and behavioral measures. Participants were between 2 and 3.5 years of age and included 255 children with ASD (184 males/71 females) and 129 age-matched TD controls (75 males/54 females). A parent interview was used to assess GI symptoms (abdominal

Gender differences in presentation of behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's disease in Taiwan.

Objectives: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are frequently met in Alzheimer's disease (AD), especially in their late stages. BPSD has been reported to be associated with gender for its biological characteristics and severity of dementia. We aimed to investigate the gender differences in presentation of BPSD in AD in Taiwan. Methods: We recruited patients with clinically diagnosed AD by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS) - Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association (ADRDA) criteria. Demographic data and annual psychometrics, inclu

Behavioral approach system activity and self-reported somatic symptoms in fibromyalgia: an exploratory study.

The first objective was to investigate the behavioural activity in the systems of Gray's theory; these are the Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS) and Behavioural Approach System (BAS), in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. The second aim was to assess in FM patients whether there is an association between BIS or BAS with self-reported somatic symptoms. Twenty FM patients and 20 healthy controls completed questionnaire measures of BIS and BAS activity (Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire), self-reported somatic symptoms (Somatic Symptoms Scale Revised), positive and nega

Adding thin-ideal internalization and impulsiveness to the cognitive-behavioral model of bulimic symptoms.

This study evaluated the cognitive-behavioral (CB) model of bulimia nervosa and an extension that included two additional maintaining factors - thin-ideal internalization and impulsiveness - in 327 undergraduate women. Participants completed measures of demographics, self-esteem, concern about shape and weight, dieting, bulimic symptoms, thin-ideal internalization, and impulsiveness. Both the original CB model and the extended model provided good fits to the data. Although structural equation modeling analyses suggested that the original CB model was most parsimonious, hierarchical regression

[Anticonvulsant mood stabilizers in the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD)].

INTRODUCTION: Dementia, besides the dominant cognitive disorders that define it, is associated with behavioral disturbances, the consequences of which are, on various levels, a determining factor for the handling of these patients. The treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms is essential and although, to date, no therapeutic solution is satisfactory, it is necessary to look for an alternative to the neuroleptics usually employed, which raise real problems of tolerance in this geriatric population. BACKGROUND: For several years, anticonvulsants, among which some have shown mood stab

Comparison of behavioral and psychological symptoms in early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: When comparing with early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EO-AD) and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LO-AD), some symptomatological differences in clinical features can be seen between them. Rapid progression, more severe language problems or visuospatial dysfunction occur more often in EO-AD patients. However, there have been very few reports about the differences in behavioral and psychological symptoms between these two groups. AIM: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the differences in behavioral symptoms between EO-AD and LO-AD groups. METHOD: Three hundred and seven consecu

Effects of donepezil on neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with dementia and severe behavioral disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct exploratory analyses of data pertaining to the efficacy of donepezil treatment of patients with severe behavioral disturbances. Preliminary studies suggest that cholinesterase inhibitors, including donepezil, may reduce behavioral disturbances in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). Most patients included in clinical trials have had low levels of psychopathology at baseline, and the effect of cholinesterase inhibitors on patients with more severe behavioral disturbances is unknown. The authors report the effects of donepezil on behavioral

Rasagiline-associated motor improvement in PD occurs without worsening of cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive and behavioral adverse events (AEs) such as hallucinations, confusion, depression, somnolence and other sleep disorders commonly limit effective management of motor symptoms in PD. Rasagiline (N-propargyl-1(R)-aminoindan) mesylate is a novel, second-generation, selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase type B inhibitor, demonstrated in monotherapy and adjunctive trials to be effective for PD with excellent tolerability. METHODS: The occurrence of cognitive and behavioral AEs and the change from baseline in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) part I menta
