Linear absorption spectroscopy of the iridium-bound carbonyl on an iodated adduct of Vaska's complex has shown that the mean vibrational frequency is insensitive to solvation by a broad range of solvents, while the spectral line width changes significantly. Oil depots are parenteral drug formulations meant for sustained release of lipophilic compounds. Until now, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of drug absorption from oil depots is lacking. The aim of this paper was to fill this gap. Secondary benzylic alcohols and diarylmethanols are common structural motifs of biologically active and medicinally relevant compounds. Here we report their enantioselective synthesis by α-arylation of primary aliphatic and benzylic alcohols under sequential catalysis integrating a Ru-catalyzed hydrogen transfer oxidation and a Ru-catalyzed nucleophilic addition. The method can be applied to various alcohols and aryl nucleophiles tolerating a range of functional groups, including secondary alcohols, ketones, alkenes, esters, NH amides, tertiary amines, aryl halides, and heterocycles.

We studied a case of flaccid paraplegia that immediately followed intrathecal injection of cytosine arabinoside diluted in 1.5% bacteriostatic water (1.5% benzyl alcohol in H2O). The complication was reversed by rinsing the CSF space with saline. Autopsy showed fibrosis and remyelination of lumbosacral nerve roots. Herein, we present a silver-catalyzed method for the selective oxidation of benzylic Csp3-H bonds with high chemo- and regioselectivity. This approach efficiently converts toluenes into aldehydes, benzylic methylenes into ketones, and benzylic alcohols into aldehydes. Notably, the reaction also proceeds under in situ generated catalytic conditions and is scalable. Control experiments further indicate that water serves as the oxygen source in the oxidized products.
