Black adolescent males are disproportionally impacted by violence exposure and violent loss. The primary aim of this study was to explore the bereavement experiences of Black adolescent males who have lost a friend or family member to murder. Participants were Black adolescent males between the ages of 14-19 years. This was a purposive sample recruited from a community-based study that took place in urban neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Participants who completed their final survey for the parent study were recruited from January to June 2017. Participants completed a brief computer…

OBJECTIVES: The death of a loved one in the intensive care unit (ICU) may have a psychological impact on relatives of deceased ICU patients. The first aim of this review is to give an overview of different bereavement support strategies and possible different effects on anxiety, depression, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and complicated grief. Secondly to assess if there is a difference in organization among bereavement support strategies mentioned in literature.
METHODS: A multi-database search (Pubmed, Web of Science, PsychInfo, Medline, and Embase) was conducted until February 6, 2…

PROBLEM: Sibling bereavement is one of the most distressing adverse life events during childhood but has received less attention in research than other forms of childhood bereavement. This integrative review identifies potential risk and protective factors for maladaptive coping following sibling bereavement and the influence of these factors on adjustment to loss.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Articles were limited to peer-reviewed studies, published in English in 2000 and beyond. Target population was bereaved siblings 0-18 years, and outcomes examined grief experiences by child self-report or pare…

It is estimated that between 36,000 and 360,000 people are affected by suicide every year in the UK, and a proportion may develop depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, or engage in high-risk behaviours. Recent systematic analyses have revealed a clear gap in research on suicide bereavement in minority ethnic groups. This study aimed to understand the experiences and support needs of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds bereaved by suicide and was the first in the UK to investigate this matter. The study was a secondary analysis of data. Participants were 7158 people residing i…

ObjectivesThe objective of this research was to determine the unique contributions of sudden death bereavement to the mental health of university students compared to non-sudden death bereaved university students. Methods: We surveyed 1047 bereaved university students (retention rate 92%) and compared the non-sudden death bereaved university student population to the sudden death bereaved university population on outcomes including mental health symptomatology, and complicated grief using logistic regressions. Results: Sixty two percent of the sample reported sudden death bereavement. There we…

The death of a parent or sibling during childhood is an adverse experience that increases risk for future behavioral health, academic, and relational problems, as well as earlier mortality. Efforts to estimate childhood bereavement prevalence rates have been hampered by methodological, reporting, and data source limitations. In the absence of national tracking systems in the United States, a quantitative statistical model has been introduced with the aim of estimating the prevalence of this public health issue to aid in needs assessment and service provision. A hybrid of binomial probability a…

OBJECTIVE: To develop global consensus on a set of evidence-based core principles for bereavement care after stillbirth.
METHODS: A modified policy-Delphi methodology was used to consult international stakeholders and healthcare workers with experience in stillbirth between September 2017 and October 2018. Five sequential rounds involved two expert stakeholder meetings and three internet-based surveys, including a global internet-based survey targeted at healthcare workers in a wide range of settings.
RESULTS: Initially, 23 expert stakeholders considered 43 evidence-based themes derived from…

Psychological adaptation following homicide loss can prove more challenging for grievers than other types of losses. Although social support can be beneficial in bereavement, research is mixed in terms of identifying whether it serves as a buffer to distress following traumatic loss. In particular, studies have not parsed out specific domains of social support that best predict positive bereavement outcomes. Recruiting a sample of 47 African Americans bereaved by homicide, we examined six types of social support along with the griever's perceived need for or satisfaction with each and analyzed…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination, a risk factor in adjustment to bereavement, has often been considered a confrontation process. However, building on research on worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and rumination in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers recently developed the Rumination as Avoidance Hypothesis (RAH), which states that rumination after bereavement serves to avoid the reality of the loss. In the present study, RAH was tested by investigating if rumination is associated with implicit loss avoidance.
METHODS: An Approach Avoidance Task (AAT) was used to …

Bereaved spouses or partners are thought to be at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. However, there are few large prospective studies and results are inconsistent. We estimated the relative mortality, prescription of psychotropic medication and use of primary medical care services in adults whose cohabitee died of cancer. To do this, we undertook a cohort study using The Health Improvement Network (THIN) UK primary care database. Participants were 1) people aged over 40, who were registered with general practices and had been exposed to the death of a cohabitee from cancer; and 2) a co

Caregivers experience multiple losses during the downhill trajectory of a loved one's terminal illness. Using mixed methods, this two-stage study explored caregiver grief during a terminal illness and after the care recipient's death. Caregiver grief was a state of heightened responsiveness during end-stage care: anxiety, hostility, depression, and trouble concentrating, remembering, and getting things done. Following the death, caregiver grief became a state of sustained reactivity: Overall distress was diminished and anxiety and hostility decreased significantly, but loneliness, sadness, and

Although the adverse mental health consequences of caregiving for a relative with a progressive dementia are well documented, little is known about caregivers' adaptation after bereavement. This longitudinal study examined changes in three groups: continuing caregivers, who had been caregiving across a 4-year period (n = 98), bereaved caregivers, whose impaired relative died between Years 1 and 4 (n = 49), and controls (n = 107). Although a mean of 19.8 months had elapsed since bereavement by Year 4, bereaved and continuing caregivers did not differ on syndromal depression or depressive sympto…

A longitudinal follow-up study which examined changes in 48 families over time (7-9 years) following a death of a child with cancer was conducted. The loss of a child required individual reorganization and adjustments within the family system. Changes in marital status and/or the addition of other children required adjustment in the relationships of family members. Some of the changes were developmental in nature while others, according to the informants, were directly related to the death of the child.

Through a case study approach involving seven respondents and intensive personal interviews, the authors explored grief and bereavement issues for survivors experiencing multiple loss of persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A three-stage model of grief including avoidance, confrontation, and reestablishment was used to explore the issues faced by survivors. The compounding factors of this phenomenon include society's unwillingness to validate the gay identity, the intensity of multiple loss, the lack of time between losses, and the subsequent impact on self-identify and sel…

OBJECTIVE: The distress of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) family caregivers may not end after bereavement. Yet, the prevalence of psychological distress and support needs after bereavement are unclear. This study examined the prevalence and predictors of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), anxiety and depression, and level of needed and received support after bereavement.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of a national cohort of bereaved ALS family caregivers recruited through the National Rehabilitation Center for Neuromuscular Diseases in Denmark. Questions included dis…

Art has long supported healing, and, in nursing, creative practices such as music, writing, and photography enhance holistic care by fostering connection, emotional well-being, and comfort during end-of-life moments. Bereavement photography, particularly in neonatal and pediatric settings, provides families with a tangible way to honor and remember their child, while also helping nurses and caregivers process their grief. Research shows that images are deeply valued as keepsakes of life and love, and when offered with ethical, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed approaches, photography b…

Introduction: Friendship bereavement is under-recognised, and grief following a drug-related death may be compounded by stigma and limited social validation. This study examines how bereaved friends understand and experience grief, focusing on how relational dynamics, social context, and existential concerns shape bereavement. Methods: We undertook a qualitative study embedded in a Norwegian project on drug-related death bereavement. Fourteen bereaved friends (8 men, 6 women; 21-54 years) completed semi-structured interviews. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, de-identified, and a…

Background/Objectives: Bereavement care is widely endorsed as a standard of pediatric oncology and palliative care, yet it remains inconsistently implemented across pediatric oncology programs in the United States, and few programs have reported longitudinal delivery metrics. We aim to describe the iterative development and delivery of a multi-component bereavement program within an outpatient pediatric palliative oncology (PPO) program, characterize the population served, and benchmark delivery against national guidelines. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive analysis of bereavement …
