Complex electrocardiographic findings in a neonate with long QT syndrome.

A case of long QT syndrome diagnosed in the early neonatal period is described. A full-term male baby was delivered by cesarean section at 38 weeks of gestation. The indication to cesarean section was sudden marked fetal bradycardia. At birth, he presented the following rhythm disorders: a) an ectopic atrial rhythm with T wave alternans, and b) atrioventricular conduction disorders. Sinus rhythm, with a prolonged QT interval and T wave alternans, was recovered soon after birth, before starting beta-blocker therapy. The family history was negative for the long QT syndrome: sudden unexpected dea

Long term effects of atenolol in patients of mitral stenosis & normal sinus rhythm.

We studied the effect of atenolol 100 mg/day in 50 symptomatic patients of mitral stenosis and normal sinus rhythm, in a placebo controlled study. Atenolol caused significant bradycardia as compared to placebo (vitamin C; P < 0.001) without any adverse effects. It also increased exercise capacity significantly as compared to placebo (P < 0.001). All the patients were followed up to the period of 9 months and no adverse effects were seen. We conclude that beta adrenergic blocking drugs like atenolol can be used as the only treatment for patients with mitral stenosis without congestive heart fai

Resting heart rate in ambulatory heart failure with reduced ejection fraction treated with beta-blockers.

AIMS: Current guidelines recommend beta-blocker therapy in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) titrated according to tolerated target dose. The efficiency of this strategy to obtain adequate heart rate (HR) control remains unclear in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to determine, in a real-world setting, the proportion of HFrEF patients who fail to achieve beta-blocker target doses, whether target doses of beta-blockers have a relationship with the adequacy in reducing resting HR over time. METHODS AND RESULTS: Beta-blocker dose and resting HR of consecuti

Reduced fronto-cortical brain connectivity during NREM sleep in Asperger syndrome: an EEG spectral and phase coherence study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sleep macrostructure and EEG power spectral density and coherence during NREM sleep are different in Asperger syndrome (AS) compared to typically developing children and adolescents. METHODS: Standard all night EEG sleep parameters were obtained from 18 un-medicated subjects with AS and 14 controls (age range: 7.5-21.5years) after one adaptation night. Spectral, and phase coherence measures were computed for multiple frequency bands during NREM sleep. RESULTS: Sleep latency and wake after sleep onset were increased in AS. Absolute power spectrum density (PSD

Rate Versus Rhythm Control for Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia characterized by disorganized atrial activity with an associated unevenly irregular ventricular response on an electrocardiogram. It is the most common sustained arrhythmia, with a lifetime risk of 25% in patients older than 40 years old. The incidence of AF increases with age and is associated with an increased risk for heart failure, stroke, adverse cardiac events, and dementia. The 2 main aims of AF treatment include anticoagulation for thromboembolism prophylaxis as well as rate vs rhythm control. The focus of this article will be on the treatment

Quantified EEG in different G situations.

The electrical activity of the brain (EEG) has been recorded during parabolic flights in trained astronauts and non trained volunteers as well. The Fast Fourier analysis of the EEG activity evidenced more asymmetry between the two brain hemispheres in the subjects who suffered from motion sickness than in the others. However, such a FFT classification does not lead to a discrimination between deterministic and stochastic events. Therefore, a first attempt was made to calculate the dimensionality of "chaotic attractors" in the EEG patterns as a function of the different g-epochs of one parabola

Alpha and high beta subthalamic intermittent activity correlates with freezing of gait severity in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling symptom that affects over half of Parkinson's disease patients (PD) and hinders the ability to walk. Subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) effectiveness in ameliorating the FOG remains controversial, lacking a reliable electrophysiological biomarker from local field potentials (LFP). METHODS: The LFP-STN rhythms bandpower and dynamics were characterized at rest across groups in a cohort of 23 patients (14 with FOG, and 9 without, n-FOG). RESULTS: FOG patients presented enhanced alpha bandpower (FOG vs. n-FOG: 0.331 ± 0.087

Electrophysiological correlates of focused attention on low- and high-distressed tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed at determining the EEG correlates of concentration on either low or high-distressed tinnitus. METHODS: Sixty-se … cative for elevated tension or augmented cognitive/emotional processing of tinnitus sound. Enhanced beta rhythm in patients with high versus low tinnitus distress, observed independently of the study condition, may be due to greater self-focused attention or more active processing of sensations derived from the own body.

Theanine boosts frontal theta and hippocampal beta and gamma oscillations for familiarity in object recognition.

Object recognition memory encourages animals to distinguish between new and known objects, supported by neural activity in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and perirhinal cortex. Theanine, a non-proteinogenic amino acid derivative from green tea leaves, enhances object recognition memory in rats through facilitated neurogenesis. Although the cellular mechanism for the theanine-enhanced object recognition memory has been elucidated to some extent, physiological evidence still remains unclear. To tackle this issue, we chronically fed mice with theanine (or tap water) for three weeks, implante

Beta and Theta Oscillations Differentially Support Free Versus Forced Control over Multiple-Target Search.

Many important situations require human observers to simultaneously search for more than one object. Despite a long history of research into visual search, the behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with multiple-target search are poorly understood. Here we test the novel theory that the efficiency of looking for multiple targets critically depends on the mode of cognitive control the environment affords to the observer. We used an innovative combination of electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye tracking while participants searched for two targets, within two different contexts: either both t

Alpha and beta band power changes in normal and dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research with healthy subjects suggests that the lower alpha band reflects attentional whereas the upper alpha band semantic processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether dyslexics show deficits in attentional control and/or semantic encoding. METHOD: The EEG was recorded while subjects were reading numbers, words and pseudowords and analyzed in a lower and upper alpha and two beta bands (spanning a range of about 8--16 Hz). A phasic response is measured in terms of a decrease in event related band power during reading with respect to a reference inter

Late EEG after-effects following short-lasting ventilatory interoceptive influences (hyperventilation and breath holding) in man.

The application of two kinds of ventilatory interoceptive influences with opposite effects on the acid-base balance (hyperventilation and breath holding) results in appearance of late nonspecific after-effects in human EEG, which do not disappear until the 30th min after the stimulation. They consist in local and spatial synchronizing processes in the alpha and beta EEG spectrum, being most pronounced in the beta-2 range (23-36 Hz). These changes are considered as a sign of a development of readjustment in the functional state of the central nervous system in the direction of its improvement.

Mozart's rhythm influence on Alzheimer's disease progression via modulation of pathological damage and cognition.

Rhythm perception is considered a conserved trait across species, and musical rhythm exposure (MRE) has been demonstrated to enhance cognitive functions in healthy individuals. Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by cognitive decline and pathological degeneration, may potentially be delayed by MRE. In this study, the APP/PS1 AD mouse model was exposed to Mozart's K.448 rhythm for six months, with APP/PS1 and wild-type C57BL/6J mice serving as controls. The Morris water maze test was employed to assess the impact of MRE on spatial learning and memory. Pathological damage was evaluated throu

[Medicinal rate control in atrial fibrillation].

Atrial fibrillation is the most common form of persistent arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation frequently causes rapid ventricular response with severe clinical symptoms requiring acute control of the ventricular rate. This leads to hemodynamic stabilization and improvement of symptoms. The long-term treatment target is to minimize patient symptoms and prevention of complications. As a rhythm control strategy does not provide a survival benefit compared to a rate control strategy, decisions on the best long-term treatment have to be individualized. Important factors affecting this decision are age

Clinical-psychophysiological studies of patients with panic attacks with and without agoraphobic disorders.

A total of 77 patients with panic attacks (PA) with and without agoraphobic disorders were studied, along with 28 healthy subjects. Use of clinical-neurological investigation methods was supplemented by psychological methods, EEG recordings, and auditory event-linked evoked potentials (EP). Patients with PA with agoraphobic disorders were found to be characterized by significant decreases in the power density of the alpha rhythm and increases in the power density of the beta rhythm in the right hemisphere, reflecting significant activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation; th…

Theta and Beta1 Frequency Band Values Predict Dyslexia Classification.

Dyslexia, impacting children's reading skills, prompts families to seek cost-effective neurofeedback therapy solutions. Utilising machine learning, we identified predictive factors for dyslexia classification. Employing advanced techniques, we gathered 14-channel Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) data from 200 participants, achieving 99.6% dyslexic classification accuracy through cross-validation. During validation, 48% of dyslexic children's sessions were consistently classified as normal, with a 95% confidence interval of 47.31 to 48.68. Focusing on individuals consistently diagnose

Diagnosis and subtyping of depressive disorders by quantitative electroencephalography: II. Interhemispheric measures are abnormal in major depressives and frequency analysis may discriminate certain subtypes.

Seventy-six inpatient RDC major depressives (51 primary and 25 secondary), drug free for at least ten days, and 93 normals were examined by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). Multivariate analyses of variance were performed on several diagnostic subgroups using QEEG variables identified in an earlier study as discriminators. Decreased interhemispheric coherence in the delta and/or theta frequency bands was present to a statistically significant degree in depressed subjects. Secondary major depressives showed a lesser decrease than did primary major depressives in both anterior and pos

A Single Case Feasibility Study of Sensorimotor Rhythm Neurofeedback in Parkinson's Disease.

Electroencephalographic activity over the sensorimotor cortex has been one of the best studied targets for neurofeedback therapy. Parkinson's disease patients display abnormal brain rhythms in the motor cortex caused by increased synchrony in the basal ganglia-cortical pathway. Few studies have examined the effects of sensorimotor-based neurofeedback therapy in humans with PD. In this pilot study, one patient, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 10 years prior, participated in two consecutive days of EEG neurofeedback training to increase sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) power over the motor cortex. Diurnal pineal 3-O-sulphotransferase 2 expression controlled by beta-adrenergic repression.

The 3-O-sulfotransferases (3OSTs) catalyze the addition of sulfate groups at the 3-OH site of glucosamine in heparan sulfate proteoglycans, which serve as critical mediators of various biological functions. We demonstrate that the 3OST2 isoform is expressed at high levels in the rat pineal specifically during the daylight hours. The dramatic diurnal rhythm of 3OST2 is regulated by central clock-controlled activities of the superior cervical ganglion, persists in constant darkness, and is inducible by light at nighttime. Importantly, 3OST2 transcription is blocked by beta-adrenergic agonists th

Cortical sources of resting state EEG rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have been inconclusive whether dominant resting state alpha rhythms differ in amplitude in dyslexic subjects when compared to control subjects, being these rhythms considered as a reflection of effective cortical neural synchronization and cognition. Here we used a validated EEG source estimation to test the hypothesis that resting state alpha rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic subjects and are related to reading deficits. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) data were recorded in 26 dyslexics (12 males, mean age of 11 years ± 0.5 standard
