Microbial interactions in agricultural ecosystems are chemically dynamic, with significant implications for ecological balance and crop protection. As synthetic fungicides face increasing regulatory and resistance challenges, applying microbial biological control agents (MBCAs) presents a potential alternative crop-protection strategy. However, the chemical and toxicological consequences of such applications remain poorly understood. Using the model ascomycete Aspergillus nidulans, the response to confrontations with twelve microbial partners, including bacterial and fungal MBCAs, plant pathog…

Certain viruses, such as those that cause smallpox and hemorrhagic fevers, have been identified as possible bioterrorism agents by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They have been designated as potential threats because large quantities can be propagated in cell culture, they are transmissible as aerosols and, for the most part, there are only limited vaccine and pharmaceutical strategies for either prevention or treatment of established infection. An additional concern is the potential to genetically modify these agents to enhance virulence or promote resistance to vaccines or i

Uveitis is an inflammatory condition involving the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, and it represents a significant cause of vision loss in both children and adults. The primary goals of uveitis management are to control inflammation, prevent recurrences, and minimize structural damage and subsequent visual impairment. Currently, corticosteroids remain the mainstay of therapy for noninfectious uveitis. In patients with sight-threatening disease, immunosuppressive or steroid-sparing agents are commonly employed. However, for individuals who are intolerant of or refractory to corticosteroids and

Endophytic fungi are used as the most common microbial biological control agents (MBCAs) against phytopathogens and are ubiquitous in all plant parts. Most of the fungal species have roles against a variety of plant pathogens. Fungal endophytes provide different services to be used as pathogen control agents, using an important aspect in the form of enhanced plant growth and induced systemic resistance, produce a variety of antifungal secondary metabolites (lipopeptides, antibiotics and enzymes) through colonization, and compete with other pathogenic microorganisms for growth factors (space an…

Dengue fever is one of the most severe viral diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, with traditional approaches of disease control proving insufficient to prevent significant disease burden. Release of Wolbachia-transinfected mosquitoes offers a promising alternative control methodologies; Wolbachia-transinfected female Aedes aegypti demonstrate reduced dengue virus transmission, whilst Wolbachia-transinfected males cause zygotic lethality when crossed with uninfected females, providing a method for suppressing mosquito populations. Although highly promising, the delicate nature of populati

UNLABELLED: Phytopathogenic Fusarium graminearum poses significant threats to crop health and soil quality. Although our laboratory-cultivated Pseudomonas sp. P13 exhibited potential biocontrol capacities, its effectiveness against F. graminearum and underlying antifungal mechanisms are still unclear. In light of this, our study investigated a significant inhibitory effect of P13 on F. graminearum T1, both in vitro and in a soil environment. Conducting genomic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses of P13, we sought to identify evidence supporting its antagonistic effects on T1. The results

The risk assessment of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs or prion diseases) can be managed at three levels: 1. control of source material that could be potentially infected (biological products of human or animal origin, instruments in contact with these products); 2. control of the processes for the purification of biological products and instrument decontamination techniques; 3. evaluation of invasive medical or surgical acts. Highest infectivity is found in central nervous system. TSE agents do resist to almost all usual decontamination procedures. National recommended procedu

BACKGROUND: The advent of biological agents has provided significant therapeutic opportunities for patients with AA amyloidosis. However, when these patients reach end-stage renal disease and begin dialysis, some clinicians may discontinue biological treatments due to the heightened risk of infections. Given that AA amyloidosis is a progressive condition, there is a potential for the disease to affect additional organs in these patients. Consequently, we aimed to evaluate the benefits and risks associated with biological agents in AA amyloidosis patients receiving dialysis.
METHOD: We perform

Although mycovirus-based biopesticides have shown promise in laboratory studies, they are not yet widely available. Our previous characterization of soybean leaf-associated gemygorvirus 1 (SlaGemV1) indicated its unique property for extracellular transmission and to evaluate its effectiveness against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, we tested three formulations in greenhouse and field settings. First, in greenhouse trials, introducing hypovirulent S. sclerotiorum infected with SlaGemV1 into soil at the time of planting led to significant improvements in leaf area, plant height, and photosynthetic eff

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is widely employed as a biological control agent against pests in tea plantations, yet its impacts on soil health and microbial ecology remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the effects of two Bt application regimes, namely moderate-frequency conventional Bt application (Bt1, 3 sprays over 21 days) and high-frequency intensive Bt application (Bt2, 6 sprays over 42 days), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial community structure and function in tea soils. The moderate-frequency conventional Bt1 significantly improved

Potato common scab (PCS), caused by pathogenic Streptomyces spp., is a globally significant disease leading to substantial economic losses in potato production. Conventional chemical control methods pose environmental risks and contribute to antibiotic resistance, necessitating sustainable alternatives. This study isolated three novel broad-spectrum bacteriophages (pSt2308, pSt2402, and pSs2407) from potato field soils, exhibiting lytic activity against multiple pathogenic Streptomyces strains while sparing non-pathogenic species. All three phages demonstrated exceptional environmental stabili

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is currently the most successful microbial biopesticide globally. Despite this, its potential to mitigate the devastating effects of chemical pesticides and its widespread adoption in large-scale field applications have not yet been fully realized due to its sensitivity to various environmental stressors. Among these stressors are ultraviolet radiation, temperature, precipitation, pH fluctuations, soil properties, and leaf surface morphology. Previous studies have assessed the individual impact of these factors on the degradation of Bt spores and Cry proteins. This

Soybean is an important global crop, but its production is often limited by root rot, which causes severe yield and quality losses. In this study, a potent antagonistic bacterium, Bacillus velezensis B05, was isolated from the rhizosphere of healthy soybean plants. Genome analysis identified eight biosynthetic gene clusters, including bacilysin and macrolide H, as well as 34 carbohydrate-active enzymes, suggesting its biocontrol potential. Metabolomic analysis detected 621 metabolites, and KEGG enrichment results were consistent with the genomic predictions. The cell-free supernatant of B05 si
