Anatomical MRI and CT Imaging Atlas of Lanyu Pigs: A Foundational Resource for Translational and Biomedical Research.

The Lanyu pig, a genetically unique miniature breed native to Taiwan, represents a valuable yet under-characterised large-animal model in biomedical research. Here, we present a detailed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT)-based anatomical atlas of male and female Lanyu pigs at 5-6 months of age. MRI effectively visualised brain, reproductive and abdominal structures, with T1-weighted images providing sharp anatomical boundaries and T2-weighted images enhancing cerebrospinal fluid and soft-tissue contrast. CT provided high-resolution visualisation of skeletal and card…

Emesis in Rodents: Present or Absent? A Critical Review of the Evidence and Implications for the Use of Rodents in Biomedical Research.

Vomiting, a key defence against accidentally ingested toxins, is widely present in mammals. Notably, rodents (e.g., rats, mice) are generally assumed to be unable to vomit, as commonly reported over the last ~100 years, but they are used extensively for biological and particularly biomedical research. However, three recent mouse papers reported 'emetic-like' responses induced by substances that are emetics in humans. Therefore, we critically re-examined the literature underpinning this longstanding view, integrating the recent and largely overlooked historical evidence challenging this consens…

Enabling end-to-end secure federated learning in biomedical research on heterogeneous computing environments with APPFLx.

Facilitating large-scale, cross-institutional collaboration in biomedical machine learning (ML) projects requires a trustworthy and resilient federated learning (FL) environment to ensure that sensitive information such as protected health information is kept confidential. Specifically designed for this purpose, this work introduces APPFLx - a low-code, easy-to-use FL framework that enables easy setup, configuration, and running of FL experiments. APPFLx removes administrative boundaries of research organizations and healthcare systems while providing secure end-to-end communication, privacy-p

Contribution of toxicologic pathologists for the safety of human health in biomedical research-past, present, and future of the JSTP.

The research field of "Toxicologic Pathology" evaluates potentially toxic chemical exposures and chemically mediated illnesses in humans and experimental animals. Comparative studies of chemical exposures between model organisms and humans are essential for the risk assessment of chemicals and human health. Here we review the development and activities of the Japanese Society of Toxicologic Pathology (JSTP) during its 37-year history. Toxicological pathology studies provide many interesting and valuable findings. Rodent cancer bioassay data demonstrate the importance of dose levels, times, and

Mistrust in biomedical research and vaccine hesitancy: the forefront challenge in the battle against COVID-19 in Italy.

Researchers have been working quickly and collaboratively for the development of vaccines against the COVID-19 virus. The effort of the scientific community in searching a vaccine for COVID-19 may be hampered by a diffused vaccine hesitancy. Two waves of data collection on representative samples of the Italian population (during the "first" and "second" phase of the Italian Covid-19 mitigation strategy) were conducted to understand citizens' perceptions and behaviors about preventive behaviors willingness to vaccine for COVID-19. Our study shows that willingness to COVID-19 vaccine is correlat

The bovine lung in biomedical research: visually guided bronchoscopy, intrabronchial inoculation and in vivo sampling techniques.

There is an ongoing search for alternative animal models in research of respiratory medicine. Depending on the goal of the research, large animals as models of pulmonary disease often resemble the situation of the human lung much better than mice do. Working with large animals also offers the opportunity to sample the same animal repeatedly over a certain course of time, which allows long-term studies without sacrificing the animals. The aim was to establish in vivo sampling methods for the use in a bovine model of a respiratory Chlamydia psittaci infection. Sampling should be performed at var

Safe and efficient methods of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for biomedical research in cynomolgus monkeys.

We have established safe and efficient methods for autologous hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) that include regimens of supportive care to ensure survival during hematopoietic reconstitution following otherwise lethal total body irradiation. Eleven young adult cynomolgus monkeys were studied. Bone marrow was aspirated from the ilium and/or tuber ischiae after administration of recombinant human stem cell factor (SCF) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Using the immunomagnetic selection method, CD34+ cells were then isolat

Case studies from the biomedical and health systems research activities of the Swiss Tropical Institute in Africa.

Neither high theoretical efficacy of disease control tools, nor diagnostic accuracy, nor good compliance, nor adequate coverage can lead on its own to the final goal of community effectiveness. There is a complex relationship between these factors. The different steps in the process leading to effective health care in the community are discussed on the basis of biomedical and health systems research activities of the Swiss Tropical Institute. Schistosomiasis and malaria control provide the background to problems related to the efficacy of tools. In particular, information on the trial of a mal

Methods Used and Application of the Mouse Grimace Scale in Biomedical Research 10 Years on: A Scoping Review.

The Mouse Grimace Scale (MGS) was developed 10 years ago as a method for assessing pain through the characterisation of changes in five facial features or action units. The strength of the technique is that it is proposed to be a measure of spontaneous or non-evoked pain. The time is opportune to map all of the research into the MGS, with a particular focus on the methods used and the technique's utility across a range of mouse models. A comprehensive scoping review of the academic literature was performed. A total of 48 articles met our inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The

Critical analysis of the value of the rabbit median nerve model for biomedical research on peripheral nerve grafts.

The rabbit has been proposed to represent an animal model that allows studying peripheral nerve regeneration across extended gap lengths. We describe here our experiences with the rabbit median nerve model and the obstacles it comes along with. This short communication is meant to inform the community and to prevent other researcher from investing time and animal lives in a model with low translational power.

Improving the evaluation of worldwide biomedical research output: classification method and standardised bibliometric indicators by disease.

ObjectiveSince most biomedical research focuses on a specific disease, evaluation of research output requires disease-specific bibliometric indicators. Currently used methods are insufficient. The aim of this study is to develop a method that enables detailed analysis of worldwide biomedical research output by disease.DesignWe applied text mining techniques and analysis of author keywords to link publications to disease groups. Fractional counting was used to quantify disease-specific biomedical research output of an institution or country. We calculated global market shares of research output…

Current and Future Research Trends in Agricultural and Biomedical Applications of Medicinal Mushrooms and Mushroom Products (Review).

Here, we analyze the status and future trends in the study of medicinal mushrooms (MMs) in agriculture and biomedicine. Fruiting bodies of mushrooms are heterotrophic organisms that obtain all their nutritive requirements from the substrate. Mushroom substrates are agro-industrial plant residues and forest byproducts, which are usually called lignocellulosic materials. A good substrate for mushroom growth must be suitable both chemically and physically, as well as have the proper conditions for microbial activities. Under suitable conditions, mushrooms can excrete key enzymes for unlocking ind

Research prioritization through prediction of future impact on biomedical science: a position paper on inference-analytics.

BackgroundAdvances in biotechnology have created "big-data" situations in molecular and cellular biology. Several sophisticated algorithms have been developed that process big data to generate hundreds of biomedical hypotheses (or predictions). The bottleneck to translating this large number of biological hypotheses is that each of them needs to be studied by experimentation for interpreting its functional significance. Even when the predictions are estimated to be very accurate, from a biologist's perspective, the choice of which of these predictions is to be studied further is made based on

Differences in the gastrointestinal microbiota of specific pathogen free mice: an often unknown variable in biomedical research.

Large differences were found in the numbers of facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of mice from 3 major specific pathogen free (SPF) units in Australia. The species isolated also differed between mouse colonies. In one unit the presence of Enterobacter cloacae was found to dramatically influence the survival of mice following total body irradiation. This finding conforms with previous studies which have shown the influence of variation in gastrointestinal microbiota on the immune system and on susceptibility to infection. Given that the presence or abse

Health Economics Research on Non-surgical Biomedical HIV Prevention: Identifying Gaps and Proposing a Way Forward.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although HIV prevention science has advanced over the last four decades, evidence suggests that prevention technologies do not always reach their full potential. Critical health economics evidence at appropriate decision-making junctures, particularly early in the development process, could help identify and address potential barriers to the eventual uptake of future HIV prevention products. This paper aims to identify key evidence gaps and propose health economics research priorities for the field of HIV non-surgical biomedical prevention. METHODS: We used a mixed-m
