OBJECTIVE: Birth weight is an important indicator of prenatal environment, and subtle variations of birth weight within the normal range have been associated with differential risk for cognitive and behavioral problems. Therefore, we aimed to determine if there are differences in birth weight between full-term children with uncomplicated new/recent-onset epilepsies and typically developing healthy controls. We further examined the relationships between birth weight and childhood/adolescent cognition, behavior, and academic achievement.
METHODS: One hundred eight children with new-onset/recent…

Introduction Low birth weight has been associated with an increased risk of hypertension in children. Less clear is whether high birth weight is also associated with risk. We evaluated overall and age-specific risks of primary hypertension in children and young adults associated with birth weight and birth weight for gestational age. Methods We conducted a population-based case-control study using linked Washington State birth certificate and hospital discharge data from 1987 to 2003. Cases were persons hospitalized with primary hypertension at 8-24 years of age (n = 533). Controls were random…

PURPOSE: One of the major causes of bowel obstruction in extremely premature infants is a meconium obstruction. However, there are many challenges not only in the recognition and diagnosis, but also in the management of meconium obstruction. This study aimed to find perioperative clinical features and determine the postoperative course of meconium-related ileus in very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of premature infants (n = 11, VLBW infnats; n = 16, ELBW infants) with a meconium-related ileus who u…

The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians2017eng
It is estimated that six million perinatal deaths occur every year worldwide, with premature birth being the main cause. Scientific evidence has shown that there is an association between periodontal health during pregnancy and adverse outcomes of labor, although interventional studies based on the treatment of periodontitis have failed to document an impact on reducing the incidence of preterm birth (PB) or low birth weight (LBW). Two pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed to explain this association. The direct pathway is based on the presence of gram-negative anaerobic bacteremia originat…

There were 351 liveborn infants of birth-weight 500-999 g born in the State of Victoria in the years 1979 and 1980; 89/351 (25.4%) survived to the age of 2 years: 42 (47.2%) survivors were of gestational ages of 24 to 26 weeks and 47 (52.8%) were born at 27 to 32 weeks' gestation. Survival of these extremely low birth-weight infants was significantly better (71/245, 29%) for births in tertiary centres compared with those born elsewhere (18/106, 17%). Of the 351 livebirths, 69.8% occurred in 1 of the 3 tertiary centres. All 89 survivors were traced; 84 (94.4%) were assessed at the age of at lea

IMPORTANCE: Adverse birth outcomes in the US, including preterm birth and low birth weight, are strongly tied to socioeconomic disadvantage and disproportionately impact infants of Black mothers. Increasing investments in social programs represents a potential policy approach to addressing disparities in birth outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine state-level associations of government expenditures on social programs with rates of preterm birth and low birth weight both overall and by race.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional, ecological study was conducted among liveborn infan…

BACKGROUND: Newborn admission temperature is a strong predictor of outcomes across all gestations. Hypothermia immediately after birth remains a worldwide issue and, if prolonged, is associated with harm. Keeping preterm infants warm is difficult even when recommended routine thermal care guidelines are followed in the delivery room.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of interventions designed for prevention of hypothermia in preterm and/or low birth weight infants applied within 10 minutes after birth in the delivery room, compared with routine thermal care or any other single/com…

BACKGROUND: As multiple pregnancies show a higher incidence of complications than singletons and carry a higher perinatal risk, the calculation of birth weight - and gestational age (GA)-specific perinatal mortality rates (PMR) for multiple births is necessary in order to estimate the lowest PMR for these groups.
METHODS: Details of all reported twins (192,987 live births, 5,539 stillbirths and 1,830 early neonatal deaths) in Japan between 1990 and 1999 were analyzed and compared with singletons (10,021,275 live births, 63,972 fetal deaths and 16,862 early neonatal deaths) in the annual repor…

BACKGROUND: Early gestational weight gain (E-GWG) plays a crucial role in fetal development. Its timing and sex-specific impacts have not been thoroughly investigated, especially in Asian populations.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 66,291 mother-infant pairs from the Tianjin Women and Children's Health Care System were analyzed. Linear and logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between E-GWG and birth weight outcomes across BMI groups. We also analyzed the effects of E-GWG on the birth weight of infants born to pregnant women carrying male and female …

Prospective data from 696 adolescents who delivered at 37 weeks or more gestation were analyzed to determine factors associated with weight gain during pregnancy and effects of pregnancy gains on birth weight and other outcomes of pregnancy. Pregnancy weight gain was found to be associated with the following factors: mother's ethnicity, length of gestation, parity, and presence of pregnancy-related hypertension. Maternal weight gain during pregnancy markedly increased infant birth weight. The risk of a low birth-rate infant was greatly reduced (OR = 0.14; CL = 0.1-0.2), and the risk of a macro…
