Sexual abuse and violence among adolescent girls in Botswana: a mental health perspective.

The presence of sexual abuse among societies in Botswana is a phenomenon whose occurrence is usually denied albeit the police report on it and legal frameworks have been established to combat it. Several factors influence the concealment of sexual abuse among adolescent girls, which includes cultural factors and social status of the perpetrators. This paper espouses the concept of sexual abuse among adolescent girls, the existence of the problem, its magnitude, the factors that increase vulnerability to violence and abuse, and how these factors intersect with HIV and AIDS. Two case studies usi…

The validity of HIV testing using sputum from suspected tuberculosis patients, Botswana, 2001.

SETTING: The World Health Organization recommends that sentinel HIV surveillance be conducted on tuberculosis patients. However, serum HIV testing is complicated in the TB clinic context, and may not be acceptable to patients. DESIGN: To determine the utility of the OraQuick HIV-1/2 Assay for the detection of HIV antibodies in sputum, we consecutively enrolled adult in-patients in Botswana who had sputum sent for acid-fast bacilli testing and serum sent for HIV ELISA testing. OraQuick HIV-1/2 Assay was applied to gingival secretions according to manufacturer's guidelines, and was also dipped …

Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis among employees in a US government office, Gaborone, Botswana.

SETTING: A US government office located in Botswana where two office employees, one negative and one positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), were diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in January 1998. One employee had been symptomatic with untreated laryngeal TB for 8 months. OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of and risk factors for TB transmission in the office. METHODS: Office contacts were interviewed and a tuberculin skin test (TST) was performed. A positive TST was defined as > or = 10 mm induration for employees from countries where TB is highly endemic, and as > or …

Schistosoma mansoni: intensity of infection and morbidity among schoolchildren in Matlapaneng, Ngamiland, Botswana.

Recent surveys in Ngamiland, Botswana, indicate increasing prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infections. With the introduction of a schistosomiasis control programme, 354 of 373 schoolchildren were examined quantitatively for eggs of S. mansoni, and 317 were examined clinically for hepato- and splenomegaly. 80.5% of the children examined parasitologically were found infected. Among these the arithmetric mean egg output was 744.7 and the geometric mean 307.3 eggs per gram of faeces (epg), 46.0% were excreting more than 400 epg. 23 children were found to have an enlarged liver, whereas none was …

Phylodynamic analysis reveals disparate transmission dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex lineages in Botswana.

Tuberculosis epidemics have traditionally been conceptualized as arising from a single uniform pathogen. However, Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (Mtbc), the pathogen causing tuberculosis in humans, encompasses multiple lineages exhibiting genetic and phenotypic diversity that may be responsible for heterogeneity in tuberculosis transmission. We analysed a population-based dataset of 1,354 Mtbc whole-genome sequences collected over four years in Botswana, a country with high HIV and tuberculosis burden. We identified Lineage 4 (L4) as the most prevalent (87.4%), followed by L1 (6.4%), L2 (5…

Dolosigranulum savutiense sp. nov., isolated from human upper respiratory samples collected in Botswana.

Four strains (MSK211, MSK294T, MSK312, MSK433) of a novel Dolosigranulum species were cultured from nasopharyngeal swabs collected from mother-infant dyads in southern Botswana. These strains grew optimally on tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep blood solid medium and in fastidious bacteria broth. Colonies on tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep blood agar appeared grey or white with a flat, smooth surface and variable alpha haemolysis. Cells were Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci that lacked catalase or oxidase activity. Major fatty acids were C16 : 0 (palmitic acid), C18 : 1 ω9c (oleic…

Improving the reading skills of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities: Preliminary study from Botswana.

In Botswana, Special Needs Education has been implemented for 25 years with some success but there is still a need for evidence-based methods like Frequency Building, behavioural fluency, and Precision Teaching to be used to measure and improve school performance and learning. We explored the impact of these behavioural technologies on reading performances of four children with learning disorders (ADHD, speech impairment and acquired brain disorder) in a special school in Gaborone. At the assessment, two children were unable to read letter sounds and two could not read sight words. Reading per…

Molecular Surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum Drug Resistance Markers in Clinical Samples from Botswana.

Drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum is a major threat to global malaria control and elimination efforts. In Botswana, a southern African country approaching malaria elimination, P. falciparum molecular data are not available. Parasites were assessed through pollymerase chain reaction (PCR) for confirmation of positive rapid diagnostic tests, multiplicity of infection (MOI), and drug resistance markers among isolates from clinical uncomplicated malaria cases collected at health facilities. Of 211 dried blood spot samples selected for the study, 186 (88.2%) were PCR positive for P. falciparum. …

HIV Prevalence Among Hospitalized Patients at the Main Psychiatric Referral Hospital in Botswana.

We examined HIV prevalence among patients 18-49 year olds admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Botswana in 2011 and 2012. The retrospective study analyzed females (F) and males (M) separately, comparing proportions with Chi square test and continuous variables with Wilcoxon rank-sum test, assessing significance at the 5% level. HIV seroprevalence among hospitalized psychiatric patients was much more common among females (53%) compared with males (19%) (p < 0.001). These women also appeared more vulnerable to infection compared with females in the general population (29%) (p < 0.017). Among bo…

Economic losses resulting from bovine cysticercosis with special reference to Botswana and Kenya.

Economic losses from cysticercosis are determined by disease prevalence, grade of animals infested, potential markets, prices of cattle and treatment costs for detained carcasses. The main features of the livestock economics of Botswana and Kenya are discussed. Botswana is more dependent on meat exports than Kenya and its cattle prices are much higher. The incidence of cysticercosis at export abattoirs in Botswana and Kenya is about 8 and 20% respectively. Annual losses in Botswana now approach 0-5 million pounds, while in Kenya they are about 1 million pounds. The loss per animal slaughtered …

Tuberculosis screening and care delivery in pregnant and postpartum persons living with HIV in Botswana.

Tuberculosis (TB) disease during pregnancy, particularly in persons living with HIV (PLHIV), is associated with poor maternal and neonatal outcomes. There are barriers to TB screening and care for PLHIV in the pregnant and postpartum period given atypical clinical presentation and service delivery challenges. Our objective was to understand barriers and facilitators to TB screening and care delivery during routine antenatal and postpartum care in Botswana government health centers among PLHIV and healthcare providers. In this mixed methods study conducted between April 2022 and November 2023, …

Alterations of the Upper Respiratory Microbiome Among Children Living With HIV Infection in Botswana.

Children living with HIV (CLWH) are at high risk of colonization and infection by respiratory pathogens, though this risk can be reduced by other microbes in the upper respiratory microbiome. The impact of HIV infection on the pediatric upper respiratory microbiome is poorly understood, and we sought to address this knowledge gap by identifying associations between HIV infection and the nasopharyngeal microbiomes of Batswana children. We enrolled Batswana CLWH (<5 years) and age- and sex-matched HIV-exposed, uninfected and HIV-unexposed, uninfected children in a cross-sectional study. We used

Accuracy of Pathologic Diagnosis in Patients With Lymphoma and Survival: A Prospective Analysis From Botswana.

PURPOSE: With intense HIV epidemics, southern African countries have a high burden of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, suboptimal access to pathology resources limits subtype classification. We sought to assess the diagnostic accuracy of specimens classified as lymphoma and to determine association between discordant pathologic diagnosis and overall survival. METHODS: Seventy patients with CHL or NHL and treated at three Botswana hospitals from 2010 to 2016 were analyzed. Local pathologic assessment relied primarily on morphology. All cases underwent sec…

No evidence of Trichinella spp. in domestic pig carcasses at a selected abattoir in southern Botswana.

Trichinellosis is a worldwide zoonosis with genotypes affecting different domestic and wild animals and is widely distributed throughout the world. Species and genotypes of this genus affecting different animals have been identified. Despite its occurrence in Sub-Saharan countries, the presence of trichinellosis in Botswana is yet to be confirmed. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Trichinella infection in domestic pigs slaughtered at an abattoir in Gaborone, Botswana. Of the 111 pig carcasses selected, 5 g of crus of the diaphragm was collected from each carcass, t…
