Efficacy of Prophylactic Knee Bracing in Sports.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries are common knee injuries, which can result from contact and noncontact during sports, recreation, or work-related activities. Prophylactic knee braces (PKBs) have been designed to protect the knee and decrease risk of recurrence of these injuries. Despite their success, PKBs have not been proven to be consistently effective and cost of the device must be evaluated to optimize its use in sports, particularly American football. Biomechanical studies have suggested that increased hip and knee flexion angles may reduce …

Bracing of pectus carinatum: A quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Primary treatment of pectus carinatum (PC) is performed with an external brace that compresses the protrusion. Patients are 'prescribed' a brace tightening force. However, no visual guides exist to display this force magnitude. The purpose of this study was to determine the repeatability of patients in applying their prescribed force over time and to determine whether the protrusion stiffness influences the patient-applied forces and the protrusion correction rate. METHODS: Twenty-one male participants (12-17years) with chondrogladiolar PC were recruited at the time of bra

Results of Bracing for Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative therapeutic clinical study evaluating the results of bracing for juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (JIS) … en final curves greater than 45° were regarded as failure of bracing, the success rate was 41%. The braces used were Milwaukee brace (MB) and thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthosis (TLSO) and no statistically significant difference was found between the two. None of the patients had surgery of any kind during the juvenile phase (ie, at age <10 years). DISCUSSION …

Manufactured Brace Modalities for Elbow Stiffness.

Multiple surgical and nonsurgical treatment options exist for patients with elbow stiffness. Many nonsurgical mobilization bracing options have been implemented to increase elbow range of motion. Three of the main bracing options for these patients are turnbuckle, static progressive stretch, and dynamic bracing. The purpose of this study was to review the current literature on turnbuckle, static progressive stretch, and dynamic bracing to provide information for practitioners and patients regarding which brace is more appropriate to use for elbow stiffness. Specifically, the authors compared t

[Dynamic compression brace for pectus carinatum].

Pectus carinatum occurs in one of 1500-1700 people and may lead to physical, cosmetic and psychosocial problems. Surgical treatment of pectus carinatum is performed using the 'Ravitch procedure'. An alternative and less invasive treatment consists of external compression with a brace. Results are often disappointing because of skin complications, a low level of comfort of the brace and low compliance. Nowadays a new brace (dynamic compression brace) exists with which the comfort and thus the compliance can be increased by measuring and regulating the pressure of correction during the treatment

Effect of the compressive brace in pectus carinatum.

BACKGROUND: Patients with pectus carinatum complain of cosmetic problems because they stand out in spite of wearing clothes. Surgical treatment of pectus carinatum is resection of the deformed cartilage but a wide operative scar, postoperative pain and complications related with the operation can occur. Therefore we have performed compressive brace therapy as a non-operative treatment of pectus carinatum, and observed the effects and the efficiency of this treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2001 to December 2007, 119 patients with pectus carinatum were treated with a compressive b

Functional bracing of the adult acquired flatfoot.

This article reviews the current orthotic and pedorthic management of adult acquired flatfoot and associated secondary pathology. Appropriate footwear, footwear modifications, custom foot orthoses, and ankle foot orthoses are highlighted for the treatment of this often seen foot disorder. As this pathology progresses through its various stages, the discussion provides conservative and postoperative alternatives for treatment of even the most affected feet.

Brace treatment in neuromuscular spine deformity.

We reviewed 90 consecutive patients with various neuromuscular diseases and a progressive spine deformity treated with a prefabricated Boston-type underarm corrective brace. Of these, 38 patients had spastic tetraplegia; seven, syndrome-related muscular hypertonia; 24, muscular hypotonia; and 21, myelomeningocele. The mean age at the treatment start was 9.2 years (range, 1.4-17.7 years). Twenty-four were ambulating and 66 wheelchair-bound. Hypotonia was the dominant type of muscle involvement in 49, spasticity in 28, and athetosis in 13 patients. The mean pretreatment Cobb angle was 47 degrees

Bracing of stable shaft fractures of the ulna.

In the laboratory an ulnar osteotomy was performed in 10 cadaveric specimens, which included 5 distal-third junctions and 5 middle-third junctions. The interosseous membrane was left intact. Each specimen was rotated through full pronation and full supination. Displacement less than half shaft width was considered stable. The interosseous membrane was subsequently released 2 cm proximal and 2 cm distal to the osteotomy. Repeated pronation and supination range of motion documented gross displacement greater than half of the width of the shaft and was diagnosed as unstable. To evaluate this hypo

Cast-brace treatment of ankle sprains.

Forty-two severely sprained ankles treated by a cast-brace have been reviewed. This method was devised to avoid the disadvantages of immobilization. Diagnosis was based on the history and clinical signs. Strain films were taken in 31 patients but it is submitted that this investigation may be misleading unless general anaesthesia is used. The results of the treatment by cast-brace compare favourably with those by other methods and it is considered that patients were able to return to sport in a shorter time.

Cast bracing for femoral shaft fractures.

The femoral cast-brace offers a new method of treatment for femoral shaft fractures. The cast-brace is especially well suited to fractures below the isthmus, although it can be used to treat those more proximal by giving special attention to detail. The method allows early knee motion without prolonged bed rest. Patients who should not be operated on for any medical reason or whose fracture is not amenable to surgery may be treated with the cast-brace. A series of patients with simple and complicated problems that have been treated with the cast-brace is presented. Comparisons between femoral

Colles' fractures. Functional bracing in supination.

The classic position of immobilization of Colles' fractures with the elbow in flexion, the forearm in pronation, and the wrist in volar flexion and ulnar deviation is probably the main reason for the common and rapid recurrence of the original deformity. Such a position places the brachioradialis muscle, a strong flexor of the elbow and the only muscle attached to the distal fracture fragment, in an ideal physiological position to exert a deforming force on the fracture fragments. Based on this assumption, further supported by electromyographic studies, a method of treatment was developed whic

Lack of in-brace x-rays in compliant AIS patients wearing full-time TLSO braces associates with failure.

BACKGROUND: In-brace correction and brace compliance with thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthotic (TLSO) braces are associated with successful treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This paper compares patients who had consistent radiographic documentation of in-brace correction to those who did not. METHODS: All skeletally immature (Risser 0-2) patients were treated for AIS (25-45°) with full-time TLSO braces that had compliance temperature monitors. All patients wore their braces at least 12 h a day. Brace failure was defined as curve progression to a surgical magnitude (≥ 50°). All pati…

Comparison of Aligners and Braces in Angle's Class III Malocclusion Cases: A Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Angle's Class III malocclusion, characterized by mandibular prognathism and anterior crossbite, presents significant functional and esthetic concerns. Traditionally, fixed braces have been the standard treatment, while clear aligners offer an esthetic and comfortable alternative. The effectiveness of these two modalities in Class III correction remains debated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes, treatment efficiency, patient compliance, and post-treatment stability of clear aligners versus fixed braces in Angle's Class III malocclusion cases. METHODS: A ret…

Nickel-induced labial angioedema in a pediatric patient with orthodontic braces: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Angioedema is a condition marked by sudden, intense swelling of the subcutaneous and submucosal tissues, typically associated with hypersensitivity reactions, genetic mutations, or reactions to medications. It can also result from contact with allergens such as nickel, leading to dermatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old girl presented at our Pediatric Immunology and Allergology service with recurrent labial angioedema for over a year, linked to the consumption of legumes and tomatoes, and following the use of a metal flute. Despite a nickel-positive patch test and subsequent a
