Effects of chronic fluorosis on the brain.

This article reviews the effects of chronic fluorosis on the brain and possible mechanisms. We used PubMed, Medline and Cochraine databases to collect data on fluorosis, brain injury, and pathogenesis. A large number of in vivo and in vitro studies and epidemiological investigations have found that chronic fluorosis can cause brain damage, resulting in abnormal brain structure and brain function.Chronic fluorosis not only causes a decline in concentration, learning, and memory, but also has mental symptoms such as anxiety, tension, and depression. Several possible mechanisms that have been pro

Modest hypothermia provides partial neuroprotection for ischemic neonatal brain.

Hypothermia is a frequent occurrence in newborns, and thermoregulatory management is a fundamental part of medical stabilization. Although modest reduction in brain temperature (2-3 degrees C) before ischemia provides neuroprotection in adults, the effect of modest hypothermia on immature brain has not been examined. Nine-day-old swine were exposed to 15 min of incomplete global brain ischemia, with intraischemic rectal temperatures of either 38.3 +/- 0.4 degrees C (n = 10, normothermic) or 35.4 +/- 0.5 degrees C (n = 10, hypothermic). The relationship between rectal and brain temperature was

DNA damage as a marker of brain damage in individuals with history of concussions.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is common in many populations, including athletes, veterans, and domestic abuse victims. mTBI can cause chronic symptoms, including depression, irritability, memory problems, and attention deficits. A history of repetitive mTBI has been epidemiologically associated with developing early-onset dementia and neurodegenerative diseases and, in particular, is thought to be the underlying cause of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)-a progressive tauopathy diagnosed by the presence of perivascular hyperphosphorylated tau protein (p-tau) in the depths of cortical

Hypoxic brain injury with motor apraxia following an anaphylactic reaction to hymenoptera venom.

Hypoxic brain injury can be a complication following several well known situations or disorders. The neurological and neuropsychological characteristics of patients who suffer hypoxic brain injury depend on the mechanism of injury and the structures of the brain that are particularly vulnerable to hypoxia. Injury to the hippocampus with resultant memory impairment is a well described clinical feature. Motor apraxia has not been described as a common feature following hypoxic injury. This paper describes an unusual case of hypoxic brain injury that resulted from an anaphylactic reaction to hyme

[Hypoxic brain damage after carbon monoxide poisoning. Visual agnosia, reduced initiative and memory and delayed sequelae].

Four patients with hypoxic brain damage caused by carbon monoxide poisoning are described. Three of these had attempted suicide with car exhaust fumes. Two patients had visual agnosia due to lesions in the parieto-occipital cortex. Three patients had temporary Parkinsonian symptoms. In two of these patients CT and MRI showed lesions in the globus pallidus. They also showed reduced initiative, and in one patient this was combined with minor tics and obsessive symptoms. One patient had impaired memory as the only symptom. The patient with the longest lasting exposure developed delayed sequelae;

Recent advances in the neuropsychology of human olfaction and anosmia.

Patients' olfactory functioning is rarely considered by rehabilitation specialists because this capacity is seen as unnecessary for most vocational and academic purposes. However, several recent studies have shown that intermittent exposure to fragrances can help subjects sustain attention more efficiently. As this effect is especially pronounced when subjects report attention-maintenance difficulties, accessory olfactory stimulation may enhance the sustained attention capacities of head-injured subjects. Another study is cited in which subjects who lost their sense of smell following head inj

Neurotoxins and environmental poisons.

Recent applications of modern neurobiological techniques have provided an impetus to understanding mechanisms of neurotoxicity. Environmental chemicals, including aluminium, and the organocompounds of mercury, lead and tin, may trigger neurodegenerative disorders. Regional differences in toxicity may be related to the complexity of the amino acid excitatory systems and the ability of individual cell systems to handle long-term abusive stimulation.

Personality change after severe head injury.

Personality change is widely reported after head injury, but rarely investigated quantitatively. This Paper summarises recent quantitative studies concerned with the natural history of personality change after severe head injury; its nature; its prediction; and its consequences. Reports of personality change increase with increasing time after injury, and the changes reflect a variety of phenomena including changes in affect, behaviour, maturity, and responsibility. Although there is a relationship between injury severity and personality change, other features such as premorbid personality and

Recent advances in the treatment of postischemic encephalopathy. A review.

Irreversible brain damage after a short period of cerebral ischemia is a clinical drama. Not neuronal dead in se, but a hemodynamic event, described as no reflow phenomenon (NRF) seems to be the primary pathogenetic factor towards fatal outcome. A combination of four flow promoting therapeutic measures (heparinisation, hemodilution, systemic arterial hypertension and brainflushing with dextran 40) greatly improves recovery of the brain function after 12 min. of cardiac arrest in dogs. Short acting barbiturates provide remarkable amelioration of postischemic encephalopathy in the monkey.

[Psychiatric sequelae of craniocerebral trauma--a review of the literature].

In a brief review psychiatric aspects of head-injured patients are discussed. The topic is put into a historical perspective. Examples of recent developments in head-trauma research are given. Differentiation between focal and diffuse brain injury is suggested to be of clinical relevance. Little is known as yet about the neuropsychologic and psychiatric sequelae of diffuse axonal injury to the brain.

The role of DKK1 in Alzheimer's disease: A potential intervention point of brain damage prevention?

Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), a secretory glycoprotein discovered for 'inducing generation of head', is an endogenous inhibitor of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. It was found to be involved in many pathophysiological processes in vivo. Abnormal expression of DKK1 will alter expressions of related proteins and genes not only in canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway but also in other signaling pathways. Previous studies of DKK1 focused on its function in tumors. In recent years, a large number of studies have shown that it plays an important role in embryonic development, neural regener

Atypical brain development: a conceptual framework for understanding developmental learning disabilities.

This article presents ideas that are, in part, a response to the ambiguity in the neurological research on learning disorders, the growing awareness that developmental disabilities are typically nonspecific and heterogeneous, and the growing scientific literature showing that comorbidity of symptoms and syndromes is the rule rather than the exception. This article proposes the term atypical brain development (ABD) as a unifying concept to assist researchers and educators trying to come to terms with these dilemmas. ABD is meant to serve as an integrative concept of etiology, the expression of

Deep venous thrombosis in the spastic upper limb.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of the upper extremity (UE) is an uncommon diagnosis, whereas DVT of the lower extremity is a well-known cause of morbidity and mortality in the rehabilitation patient. Patients with UE DVT secondary to venous stasis, vessel wall abnormalities, hypercoagulability, venous instrumentation and cancer have been previously reported in the literature. To our knowledge no case of DVT in a spastic upper extremity has been noted. A case report of a patient with UE DVT in a spastic extremity secondary to traumatic brain injury is presented, with a discussion of the aetiology

Cerebrospinal fluid lactate levels in term infants with perinatal hypoxia.

The prognostic value of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate concentration after an hypoxic-ischemic brain insult was evaluated. Three groups of neonates were studied and followed. Group 1A included 19 asphyxiated neonates who subsequently developed normally, Group 1B included 6 asphyxiated neonates who died or developed neurologic sequelae, and Group 2 consisted of 20 control (comparison) infants. A CSF sample was obtained within the first day of life for cytochemical analysis, culture, and lactate determination with simultaneous determination of serum lactate. The mean CSF lactate level in Grou

A method for provoking EEG abnormalities by administration of nialamide.

Nialamide, a kind of monoamine oxydase inhibitor, was used for provoking centrencephalic EEG abnormalities and 6-14 Hz positive spikes. It was assumed that these EEG abnormalities have close relationship with dysfunctions of the brainstem which is rich in monoamines and monoamine oxydase. The nialamide provocation was carried out on 49 inpatients who had centrencephalic discharges in their EEG reports. These patients consisted of four cases of epilepsy, one case of anorexia nervosa, two cases of narcolepsy and 42 cases of diencephalosis. Another series of 22 patients suffering from other disea

Term infants with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy: poor neurodevelopmental outcome despite standard neonatal intensive care.

Perinatal asphyxia may be severe and affect the neurological system, causing hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). Twenty-three term infants with HIE were studied over 3.5 years. Nine died and of the 14 survivors, eight were normal and the rest had abnormal neurological sequelae. Favourable prognostic markers were a 5 minute Apgar score > 5, first pH > 7.1, and stage I HIE. Despite standard neonatal intensive care management, the mortality and morbidity rates for these infants remained high.
