A prospective study of sow mortality in breeding herds.

This investigation was conducted to study the incidence and the causes of sow mortality in breeding herds. Data were obtained from 24 swine breeding herds with an average inventory of 3755 sows and served gilts for the total sample. Producers were involved for 12 consecutive months and agreed to submit to the diagnostic laboratory every dead or moribund sow and served gilt. The average herd death rate was 3.3% +/- 0.5 (SEM), but varied considerably among herds, ranging from 0% to 9.2%. A total of 137 sows and mated gilts died during the year, and these females had produced an average of 4.2 li…

Mortality among Swedish reindeer breeding Lapps in 1961-85.

We analyzed the mortality pattern among Swedish reindeer breeding Lapps, a unique group with a carefully preserved culture and a lifestyle that differs considerably from that of the rest of the population. The cohort consisted of 2,034 Lapps who were recorded in the 1960 Population and Housing census as members of a household where someone were occupied in reindeer breeding. The cohort was followed-up in the Swedish Cause-of-Death Register from January 1, 1961 until death or December 31, 1985. The total mortality was similar to that of the entire population. Four hundred and twenty eight death…

[Bronchial hyperreactivity of employees in swine and cattle breeding].

In order to estimate the frequency of nonspecific bronchial hyperreactivity we investigated 167 pig farmers, 102 cattle breeders and 112 control persons with a bronchial screening test with acetylcholine. We found a significant higher rate of bronchial hyperreactivity in pig farmers (16.2%) versus 7.8% in cattle breeders and 4.3% in control persons. Smokers showed a higher rate of hyperreactivity than non-smokers but non-smoking pig farmers had a higher rate of hyperreactivity (11.5%) than smokers in the control group (4.3%). In farmers with respiratory symptoms we found more positive test-res

The proposed use of melatonin in controlled sheep breeding.

The regulation by melatonin of hypothalamic-pituitary events in the ewe to advance seasonal oestrous activity, with no undesirable effects upon fertility, and its induction of those seasonal responses associated with short days indicates an essential role for melatonin in controlled-breeding programs in major sheep-producing countries. The development of suitable controlled-release systems to provide a choice of practical methods of melatonin delivery under field conditions is discussed as also are geographical and breed factors in controlled breeding with melatonin.

Abnormalities in the axial skeleton of broiler breeding fowl.

The spinal region containing caudal notarium, free thoracic vertebra (T6), and cranial synsacrum was collected from 27 male broiler breeding fowl which were about 60 weeks old when killed. In 12 birds minor abnormalities were detected on gross morphological examination, with minimal scoliotic curvature being the most frequent finding. Particular attention was paid to articulations. Radiological and histopathological examination revealed subchondral defects due to articular osteochondrosis in every spine examined. Such lesions must represent the sequelae of disturbed endochondral ossification i…

Epidemiology of Uncinaria stenocephala infections in greyhound breeding kennels.

Field observations at breeding kennels in eastern England support the view that perinatal transmission is of minor importance in the epidemiology of Uncinaria stenocephala infections in greyhounds. Patent infections became established soon after weaned pups were put onto gas paddocks. Egg-counts rose to high levels, tending to peak in dogs 25-35 weeks old and to decline thereafter. This pattern was related to the age of the host and was not seasonal. The consequent deposition of large numbers of eggs onto the paddocks at irregular intervals distorted the seasonal fluctuations in herbage larval…

Breeding of a non-obese, diabetic strain of mice.

A female mouse spontaneously exhibiting polyuria and glucosuria accompanied by rapid weight loss waa found in one of two sublines derived from the CTS mice. Eight mating pairs were made using its offspring and selection was performed for both spontaneous diabetes and reproductive ability. After six generations of the selective breeding the diabetic (nod) and the control (non) lines were established. A marked sex difference was observed in the incidence of diabetic symptoms in the nod mouse. The cumulative incidence of the onset up to 30 weeks of age was 80% in females and less than 20% in male…

Morbidity and mortality in a closed foxhound breeding colony.

A 3-year mortality and morbidity survey was conducted in a research foxhound breeding colony. Its purpose was to identify specific problem areas for further study and rectification. Three-hundred and thirty-nine litters (2,872 puppies) were whelped. Seventeen percent (17.4%) of the puppies died before weaning and 4.0% died between weaning and 30 weeks of age. Major puppy losses (55.6% of the total mortality) occurred during the 1st week after birth. The majority of deaths during this period was attributable to stillbirth, immaturity or runting, trauma and congenital abnormalities. The predomin…

Successful breeding of the laboratory-housed gibbon (Hylobates lar).

A cage was developed which included a squeeze wall for easy handling of the gibbon (Hylobates lar) and which provided gibbon breeding pairs with privacy from others of the same species. Females living in this environment displayed menstrual and vaginal eversion cycles averaging 30 days (range 22-44). Twelve compatible pairs produced eight live infants from 15 conceptions in a 33-month period. Two full term stillbirths, two abortions, and three current pregnancies accounted for the other seven conceptions. Monthly uterine palpations were performed and pregnancy could be detected as early as 27 …

Primate breeding season: photoperiodic regulation in captive Lemur catta.

Under natural light in Portland, Oreg., captive ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) experience a breeding season that differs by nearly half a year from the season in Madagascar. A series of experimental day length changes from 1971 to 1974 demonstrated the ability of both temperate and tropical photoperiod cycles to induce estrous cycles in quiescent animals. After photoperiodic activation, most impregnated females failed to resume estrous cycles even after infant separations unless they received additional photoperiod changes. Unimpregnated females, on the other hand, showed no significant decl…

Breeding pure and crossbreeds of European cattle breeds for milk production improvement under tropical climate conditions-a review.

The aim of this review was to present the breeding status of pure or crossbreeds of European cattle with African indigenous cattle in order to improve milk yield in African tropical conditions. As the African indigenous breeds are characterized by small size, low body weight (300-450 kg) and low production performances (less than 1000 kg per lactation), short lactation length (205-240 days), etc., the crossbreeding with pure European cattle was done in order to ameliorate production performances especially milk and beef production. As results, it was seen that F1 offspring improved output prod…

Evaluating breed and seasonal effects on milk yield, composition, and cheesemaking ability of 2 Italian dairy sheep breeds.

This study aimed to characterize milk yield, composition, and cheesemaking traits of Comisana and Massese ewes managed under uniform conditions and to evaluate the effects of breed, season, and their interaction. Milk samples were collected from 161 ewes across 4 sampling periods, measuring productive, compositional, and cheesemaking traits. A linear mixed model was implemented, with fixed effects of breed, sampling period, stage of lactation, parity, and relevant interactions and random effects of animal and residual. Massese ewes showed higher milk yield, resulting in higher component yields

Effects of the Level and Composition of Concentrate Supplements before Breeding and in Early Gestation on Production of Different Hair Sheep Breeds.

Female hair sheep, 27 Dorper (DOR), 41 Katahdin (KAT), and 39 St. Croix (STC), were used to determine influences of the nutritional plane before breeding and in early gestation on feed intake, body weight, body condition score, body mass indexes, blood constituent concentrations, and reproductive performance. There were 35 multiparous and 72 primiparous sheep, with initial ages of 5.6 ± 0.25 years and 1.5 ± 0.01 years, respectively (average overall initial age of 2.8 ± 0.20 years). Wheat straw (4% crude protein; dry matter [DM] basis) was consumed ad libitum and supplemented with approximately…

Farmers' Perceptions of Dairy Cattle Breeds, Breeding and Feeding Strategies: A Case of Smallholder Dairy Farmers in Western Kenya.

To understand farmers' preference and perceptions of breed attributes, breeding and feeding practices, 419 households in western Kenya were interviewed in a cross-sectional survey. Respondents scored their preference for cattle breeds, traits and breeding methods on a scale of 1 (most preferred) to 5 (least preferred). Preferences were compared using multinomial logistic regression models on weighted scores. The Ayrshire breed was most preferred followed by the Friesian. Using hardship tolerance as a reference trait, the Friesian was preferred 4.86 times more for high milk production and Ayrsh…

Diversifying Selection Between Pure-Breed and Free-Breeding Dogs Inferred from Genome-Wide SNP Analysis.

Domesticated species are often composed of distinct populations differing in the character and strength of artificial and natural selection pressures, providing a valuable model to study adaptation. In contrast to pure-breed dogs that constitute artificially maintained inbred lines, free-ranging dogs are typically free-breeding, i.e., unrestrained in mate choice. Many traits in free-breeding dogs (FBDs) may be under similar natural and sexual selection conditions to wild canids, while relaxation of sexual selection is expected in pure-breed dogs. We used a Bayesian approach with strict false-p…

Antimicrobial use in breeding kennels and antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from healthy breeding bitches in Northern Italy.

Antimicrobials can be overused in dog breeding facilities, leading to increased resistance among commensal bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial use intensity in a professional canine reproduction setting by assessing the resistance profiles of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from healthy breeding bitches, as well as through a questionnaire for breeders. Five bitches from each of 15 kennels in Northern Italy were sampled from the perivulvar skin and rectum, and the susceptibility of the isolated bacteria to a panel of different antimicro…

Latitudinal variation in seasonal migration of Eurasian curlews Numenius a. arquata breeding in Great Britain: breeding failure advances departure timing in southern populations.

BACKGROUND: Migration plays a crucial role in the annual cycle of migratory birds. The Eurasian curlew Numenius arquata arquata, a species of high conservation concern in Great Britain, exhibits a wide range of migratory behaviours across its western distribution, from resident and short-distance movements to long-distance migrations along the East Atlantic Flyway. However, migratory behaviours of British-breeding curlews remain poorly studied. In particular, the ecological and life-history factors underlying variation in migration, such as timing and duration, remain unclear in this declining…
