Photodegradation of TBBPA/ABS materials and exposure to brominated residues during WEEE recycling.

Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), the main brominated flame retardant in acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastics, is widely found in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). As an additive, it can migrate from the polymer matrix and degrade, forming hazardous brominated compounds. The photochemical behavior of TBBPA in ABS, however, has not been systematically investigated, limiting accurate evaluation of occupational exposure during recycling. This study examined the photodegradation of TBBPA-containing ABS under controlled UV and thermal conditions using spectroscopic, chromatog

Associations between exposure to brominated flame retardants and hyperlipidemia risk in U.S. Adults.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure to toxic brominated flame retardants (BFRs) has been confirmed to have detrimental effects on human health. The impact of serum BFRs on hyperlipidemia risk has not been sufficiently examined. Our objective is to identify both the individual and combined effects of serum BFRs on hyperlipidemia and to further investigate the most influential chemicals. METHODS: We included 7,009 individuals with complete details on 9 types of serum BFRs, hyperlipidemia, and other covariates from the NHANES in 2007-2016. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to evaluat

Risks of Birth Defects Following In Utero Exposures to Unregulated Brominated Haloacetic Acids.

INTRODUCTION: Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are water disinfection byproducts (DBPs) regulated as a mixture of five species (HAA5) in the United States and Canada. To date, two brominated HAAs (BrHAAs) in HAA5 (monobromoacetic acid [MBAA], dibromoacetic acid [DBAA]) have been associated with birth defects in some epidemiologic studies, but the other four unregulated BrHAAs remain understudied. METHODS: We analyzed registry-based case-control data on 16 birth defect phenotypes in relation to temporally weighted first-trimester exposures to the four unregulated BrHAAs (tribromoacetic acid [TBAA], bro

Associations between exposure to brominated flame retardants and gallstones risk in U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND: Gallstones, affecting 6-13.9 % of adults worldwide, have been associated with metabolic disturbances and environmental pollutants. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), a class of persistent organic pollutants with hepatotoxic potential, have been hypothesized to contribute to gallstone pathogenesis; however, the extant epidemiological evidence remains inconclusive. This study aims to investigate the association between serum BFRs and gallstone risk, exploring nonlinear relationships, mixed exposures, and mediating mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 15,560 participants in NHANE

Bromination of Carbon and Formation of PBDD/Fs by Copper Bromide in Oxidative Thermal Process.

Brominated aromatic compounds are unintentionally generated during various thermal processes, including municipal solid waste incineration, electric-waste open burning, and secondary copper smelting. Copper (Cu) plays an important role in the formation of brominated aromatic compounds. In the present study, the thermochemical behaviors of Cu and Br in model samples, including copper bromide (CuBr2) and activated carbon, were studied using in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and thermogravimetry. Quantification of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) was also condu

Formation of new brominated disinfection byproducts during chlorination of saline sewage effluents.

Chlorination could be the most cost-effective method for disinfecting saline sewage effluents resulting from toilet flushing with seawater. Upon chlorination, the high levels of bromide ions in saline sewage effluents (up to 32 mg/L) can be oxidized to hypobromous acid/hypobromite, which could then react with organic matter in the sewage effluents to form brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs). In this study, primary and secondary saline sewage effluents were collected and chlorinated at different chlorine doses, and a powerful precursor ion scan method using ultra performance liquid chr

Formation and decomposition of new and unknown polar brominated disinfection byproducts during chlorination.

Brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) are generally more cytotoxic and genotoxic than their chlorinated analogues. A great portion of total organic bromine in chlorinated drinking water is still unknown and may be ascribed to polar Br-DBPs. In this work, a novel approach, precursor ion scan using ultra-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, was adopted and further developed for selective detection and identification of polar Br-DBPs, which made it possible to reveal the whole picture of the formation and decomposition of polar Br-D

A Theoretical Study of Brominated Porphycenes: Electronic Spectra and Intersystem Spin-Orbit Coupling.

In this paper, a time-dependent density functional theoretical study (TDDFT) has been carried out for brominated 2,7,12,17-tetra-n-propylporphycenes. Their potential therapeutic use in photodynamic therapy (PDT), a noninvasive medical treatment of cancer diseases, is due to the strong absorbance in the red part of the visible spectrum and the presence of heavy atoms (bromine). The prediction of electronic spectra for photosensitizer molecules can be a valuable tool in the design of drugs for application in PDT. Singlet and triplet vertical excitation energies have been calculated by means of t

Electrophilic bromination of alkenes: environmental, health and safety aspects of new alternative methods.

More than twenty new alternative methods for bromination of alkenes have been evaluated taking into consideration their resource demands, waste production as well as environmental, health and safety aspects. The cost of bromine and the substances designated to circumvent the application of molecular bromine have also been taken into account. As bromine is only one of several problematic substances being used, its avoidance-by applying bromine supported on solid material or by performing the in situ generation of bromine-does not significantly reduce the technological requirements. On the contr

Spectrophotometric and titrimetric determination of certain adrenergic drugs, using organic brominating agents.

New oxidimetric titrants, bromamine T, dibromohydantoin, N-bromophthalimide, and N-bromosuccinimide, were applied to the determination of ephedrine.HCl, norephedrine.HCl, and methyldopa. Direct potentiometric and visual indicator titration methods as well as back-titration procedures have been developed for their determination. Oxidation of ephedrine and norephedrine produces benzaldehyde, which is extracted from pH 11.0 phosphate buffer with ether or hexane and determined spectrophotometrically at 242 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range from 0.2 to 2 mg ephedrine.HCl and from

[Simple analytical method of bromine in fruits and grain products with wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer].

A simple analytical method was developed for the determination of total bromine in fruits and grain products by means of wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF).Five gram samples of fresh fruits, frozen fruits, dried fruits and grain products were extracted with distilled water twice and diluted to 25 mL with distilled water. The sample solution (0.5 mL) was dripped onto the filter paper, which was dried and analyzed by WDXRF. The working curve was linear in the range of 0 to 10 microg/mL. Recoveries at the level of 5 microg/g were 76-104%. The detection limit was 0.5 mic

Extension of a temperature-dependent aqueous solvation model to compounds containing nitrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and sulfur.

Most methods for predicting free energies of solvation have been developed or validated exclusively for room temperature. Recently, we developed a model called SM6T for predicting aqueous solvation free energies as a function of temperature for solutes composed of C, H, or O, and here we present solvation model 8 with temperature dependence (SM8T) for predicting the temperature dependence of aqueous free energies of solvation for compounds containing H, C, N, O, F, S, Cl, and Br in the range 273-373 K. We also describe the database of experimental aqueous free energies of solvation used to par

A gas-phase kinetic study of the reaction between bromine monoxide and methylperoxy radicals at atmospheric temperatures.

The rate constant of the reaction of BrO with CH(3)O(2) was determined to be k1 = (6.2 +/- 2.5) x 10(-12) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) at 298 K and 100-200 Torr of O2 diluent. Quoted uncertainty was two standard deviations. No significant pressure dependence of the rate constants was observed at 100-200 Torr total pressure of N2 or O2 diluents. Temperature dependence of the rate constants was further investigated over the range 233-333 K, and an Arrhenius type expression was obtained for k1 = 4.6 x 10(-13) exp[(798 +/- 76)/T] cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1). The product branching ratios were evaluated and th

Bromine-Functionalized Lanthanide MOF with Acid-Base Dual Active Sites: Catalysis for CO2 Cycloaddition and N-Formylation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a prominent research direction for the heterogeneous catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2), with substantial implications for resource utilization and sustainable development. Herein, a bromine-functionalized lanthanide MOF (Eu-DBT) was synthesized via solvothermal reaction of Eu3+ ions with 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid (H2DBT), constructing a bifunctional acid-base catalytic system. Eu-DBT exhibits excellent catalytic performance in two key CO2 fixation reactions. It achieves a 98.4% yield and 99.5% selectivity for the cycloaddition of CO2 with

Airborne Observations of Reactive Inorganic Chlorine and Bromine Species in the Exhaust of Coal-Fired Power Plants.

We present airborne observations of gaseous reactive halogen species (HCl, Cl2, ClNO2, Br2,BrNO2, and BrCl), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nonrefractory fine particulate chloride (pCl) and sulfate(pSO4) in power plant exhaust. Measurements were conducted during the Wintertime INvestigation of Transport, Emissions, and Reactivity campaign in February-March of 2015 aboard the NCAR-NSF C-130 aircraft. Fifty air mass encounters were identified in which SO2 levels were elevated ~5 ppb above ambient background levels and in proximity to operational power plants. Each encounter was attributed to one or m

Effect of temperature and pH on dehalogenation of total organic chlorine, bromine and iodine in drinking water.

Disinfection byproduct (DBP) concentrations in drinking water distribution systems and indoor water uses depend on competitive formation and degradation reactions. This study investigated the dehalogenation kinetics of total organic chlorine (TOCl), bromine (TOBr) and iodine (TOI) produced by fulvic acid under different pH and temperature conditions, and total organic halogen (TOX) variations in a treated drinking water under simulated distribution system and heating scenarios. TOX dehalogenation rates were generally in the order of TOI ≅ TOCl(NH2Cl) > TOBr > TOCl(Cl2). The half-lives of diffe

Adsorbable organic bromine compounds (AOBr) in aquatic samples: a nematode-based toxicogenomic assessment of the exposure hazard.

Elevated levels of adsorbable organic bromine compounds (AOBr) have been detected in German lakes, and cyanobacteria like Microcystis, which are known for the synthesis of microcystins, are one of the main producers of natural organobromines. However, very little is known about how environmental realistic concentrations of organobromines impact invertebrates. Here, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was exposed to AOBr-containing surface water samples and to a Microcystis aeruginosa-enriched batch culture (MC-BA) and compared to single organobromines and microcystin-LR exposures.
