Evaluation of glucocorticosteroid injection for the treatment of trochanteric bursitis.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted an open observational study to assess the short and longterm effect of single local glucocorticosteroid injection for trochanteric bursitis. METHODS: 75 patient diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis based on clinical criteria were injected; 20, 32, and 22 patients each received 6, 12, and 24 mg betamethasone, respectively, mixed with 4 cm3 of 1% lidocaine. A standardized baseline questionnaire was administered to assess the severity and functional limitation due to trochanteric pain, including the visual analog scale for pain. Patients were followed at Weeks 1, 6, and 2…

Aspergillus terreus as a cause of septic olecranon bursitis.

A 72-year-old, non-insulin-dependent diabetic man with a 2-month history of painful right olecranon bursitis was examined after a fall on the sidewalk that resulted in some abrasion of the skin overlying the elbow. Fluid aspirated from the bursa showed growth of Aspergillus terreus, as did tissue from a bursectomy performed 1 week later. Septic bursitis is an uncommon disease that is nearly always caused by Staphylococcus aureus or hemolytic streptococci. Mycotic bursitis is very rare and this is the first reported instance of any Aspergillus species causing septic bursitis.

Complication of barbotage, acute calcific bursitis treated successfully.

One of the most common causes of chronic shoulder pain that significantly impairs patients' quality of life is rotator cuff calcific tendinitis. The supportive approach of analgesics, anti-inflammatory medications, and physiotherapy is preferred to treat mild symptoms. However, severe intractable symptoms necessitate alternative treatment, and ultrasonography-guided percutaneous barbotage is regarded as an effective treatment technique due to its minimal invasiveness, low cost, and rapid significant pain relief. Post-barbotage complications are reported as acute calcific bursitis along with in…

[Arthroscopic Treatment of Chronic Retrocalcaneal Bursitis - Endoscopic Calcaneoplasty].

INTRODUCTION The authors evaluate the results of endoscopic treatment and analyse the causes of persisting difficulties in retrocalcaneal bursitis unresponsive to conservative treatment. Stated as one of the causes is the possible chronic irritation of minor/partial tears of anterior parts of the distal portion of the Achilles tendon, which have no chance to heal due to continued overload and impingement syndrome of the superior prominence of the calcaneal tubercle. MATERIAL AND METHODS The authors evaluate the group of 24 patients (10 women and 14 men) diagnosed with retrocalcaneal bursitis, …

[Rapidly destructive hip disease with resultant iliopectineal bursitis].

A man aged 72 years developed complete destruction of his right hip joint within 12 weeks: 'rapidly destructive hip disease' (RDHD). Analysis of weight loss also revealed iliopectineal bursitis. Nine months after total hip arthroplasty, the patient was free of complaints and the bursitis had disappeared. The cause of RDHD is unclear. Associations have been made with osteonecrosis, chondrocalcinosis and arthropathies of other joints. The destruction of the acetabulum and the femoral head can lead to hydrops in the hip joint and, via a communication between the joint and the iliopectineal bursa,…

Semimembranosus-tibial collateral ligament bursitis: MR imaging findings.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe the MR imaging characteristics of semimembranosus-tibial collateral ligament (SMTCL) bursitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients (37-68 years old) with medial joint pain and presumed internal derangements of the knee underwent MR imaging. Fluid collections around the SMTCL were found prospectively in five patients. Our retrospective evaluation of recent MR imaging cases that had been previously diagnosed as pes anserinus bursitis revealed 10 additional cases with similar findings. RESULTS: We believe that SMTCL bursitis clinically expla…

Bursitis in the nonarticular part of the mandible in atopic dermatitis.

The most common sites of bursitis are articulations, such as the elbows and knees; it rarely occurs in the head and neck or in non-articulation sites. A report of bursitis in the anterior tibial region, a nonarticulation site, during a flare-up of atopic dermatitis (AD) led us to suggest an association between atopic dermatitis and bursitis. We report the case of a 42-year-old man with severe AD and rare bursitis of the mandible, a nonarticulation site. He underwent several resections of his bursitis but repeatedly recurred. We treated him simultaneously with surgical treatment of his bursitis…
