In addition to controlling pest organisms, the systemic neurotoxic pesticide fipronil can also have adverse effects on beneficial insects and other non-target organisms. Here, we report on the sublethal effects of fipronil on the farmland butterfly Pieris brassicae. Caterpillars were reared on plants that had been grown from seeds coated with fipronil or on leaf discs topically treated with a range of fipronil dosages (1-32 µg kg-1 on dry mass basis). Females that had developed on fipronil plants laid ca half the number of eggs than females that had developed on control plants. In the bioassay

BACKGROUND: Meato-mastoid fistula is a connection between the external auditory canal and the mastoid cavity. It may be iatrogenic or pathological. The repair of these focal canal wall defects is necessary to prevent retraction pockets or sequential cholesteatoma and attain relief from otorrhoea.
AIM/OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of an innovative technique for repair of meato-mastoid fistula (less than or equal to 10mm in size) in the bony external auditory canal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 5 surgeries performed in our hospital between January 2017 a

Photoinduced structural changes (PSC) is one of the fundamental excited-state dynamic processes, and yet often very challenging to distinguish from competing electronic excited-state relaxation channels having similar or even comparable timescales. Here, we report a detailed study on the PSC of a pyrazolate bridged platinum(II) binuclear complex, BFPtPZ (C^NPt(μ-pz')2 PtC^N, C^N=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, pz'=pyrazolate), a molecular butterfly, using time-correlated single photon counting measurements at different wavelengths and sample temperatures. Analysis of the results obtained using

Introduction: There have been significant increases in the number of acetabular fractures in elderly patients with primarily ventral pathology and medial protrusion of the femoral head. We have developed the "acetabulum wing plate", which is designed to facilitate repositioning, with its anatomically precontoured structure, and which offers full support of the quadrilateral surface, thus counteracting the force of the femoral head pushing inwards. Conventional plate osteosynthesis only provides insufficient support to the medial surface. After a successful series of biomechanical tests, we now

OBJECTIVES: To identify the disease-causing mutation in a large family segregating dominantly inherited butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy (BPD) and to describe the microscopic pathological changes observed in a member of this family.
METHODS: Seventeen individuals at risk for dominantly inherited BPD in a family were examined and blood samples obtained. Linkage analysis and mutation screening of the human retinal degeneration slow (RDS)/peripherin locus were performed. Light and electron microscopic examinations were performed on 1 postmortem eye of 1 affected individual.
RESULTS: Four indi

Jean Dominique Bauby, former editor of Elle, suffered a stroke to his brain stem that left him with locked-in syndrome. Subsequently, through blinking his left eye, he writes his memoir of this experience, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This paper explores the meaning of embodiment, especially as one's body bears upon one's personal identity. It explores the various challenges and threats to selfhood that result from Bauby's experience and recounts how Bauby rises to the challenge through his memory and imagination.

Climatic stratifications, in particular differences in temperature, occur along altitudinal clines. Understanding divergence across these regions can give insight into speciation and diversification, as well as how species may respond to climate change scenarios. Most past research has focused on temperate regions, yet year-round stable temperatures in the tropics make altitudinal temperature variation more pronounced and increase the likelihood of local adaptation across relatively narrow gradients. Here we investigate how genetics and the environment influence a wide range of traits in two w

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is characterized by vivid, elaborate and recurrent visual hallucinations in psychologically normal people. It most often occurs in older, visually impaired persons. The prevalence of the syndrome has been reported at 1-40% in Asia, Europe and North America. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of CBS in the older aged, visually impaired population in Australia.
METHODS: Two hundred consecutive patients attending ophthalmology clinics aged more than 60 years with best-corrected visual acuity of 6/12 or less were scree

Sexual selection theory predicts that the different selection pressures on males and females result in sexual conflict. However, in some instances males and females share a common interest which could lead to sexual cooperation. In the pierid butterfly Pieris napi the male and the recently mated female share a common interest in reducing female harassment by other males soon after mating. Here we show that P. napi males transfer an anti-aphrodisiac to the female at mating, methyl-salicylate (MeS), which is a volatile substance which mated females emit when courted and which makes males quickly

Evolution has given rise to lifespans in extant species ranging from days to centuries. Given that mechanisms of ageing are highly conserved, studying long-lived lineages across the animal kingdom could yield insights relevant for healthy ageing in humans. The long lifespans reported for the Heliconius butterfly genus position it as a promising new model system for such studies, but its potential is limited by a paucity of available data. Here, we collate data from commercial butterfly houses, mark-release-recapture studies, and insectary populations to reveal the evolution of a three-fold lif

The evolution of more complex brains required existing neurons and neural circuits to accommodate new inputs. The genetic and developmental mechanisms that enable such integration are largely unknown. Butterflies evolved more complex retinal mosaics through the addition of a second R7 color photoreceptor per ommatidium (unit eye). In Drosophila, the unique R7 makes a stochastic choice to express one of two opsin genes. In butterflies, the two R7s make two independent stochastic cell fate choices in each ommatidium, producing three ommatidial types instead of the two in flies. Here, we investig…

In Crouzon syndromes, there is an hypoplasia of the midface. An intermediate midfacial osteotomy between Lefort 2 and Lefort 3, called "butterfly osteotomy", associated wit a rigid external distraction on a Pooley helmet allows to pull the entire middle maxillary, orbital and zygomatic level in one step, and to project the tip of the nose, by a single endobuccal approach. The osteotomy concerns the entire middle level of the face while respecting the upper part of the nose. The external distractor with cranial support makes it possible to reposition the face, corrects the open bite and project

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether fracture shortening, displacement, and the length of butterfly fragments were reliable radiographic indicators of secondary healing failure in displaced midshaft clavicle fractures with butterfly fragments and to determine whether these radiographic parameters were effective in predicting healing disorders and could be utilized as prognostic factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2015 and January 2020, a total of 31 adult patients (29 males, 2 females; mean age: 43.6±13.2 years; range, 21 to 74 years) who presented with a close

Chronic Cardiovascular and Kidney Disorder (CCKD) represents a growing challenge in healthcare, characterized by the complex interplay between heart and kidney diseases. This manuscript delves into the "butterfly effect" in CCKD, a phenomenon in which acute injuries in one organ lead to progressive dysfunction in the other. Through extensive review, we explore the pathophysiology underlying this effect, emphasizing the roles of acute kidney injury (AKI) and heart failure (HF) in exacerbating each other. We highlight emerging therapies, such as renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibi

Memory alloy patella claws for treating patella fractures have been used for more than 30 years with many desirable features including fast healing, quick recovery, and avoidance of top abrasion of Kirschner wires and other complications. However, there are many models and it is difficult to choose the accurate claw for the patient. In this study, a finite element model of the butterfly-shaped patellar claw made of shape memory alloy was established, its mechanical structure was analyzed, and its clinical application was monitored. We used Solidworks Simulation software for modeling and mainly
