Calcinosis cutis results from the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Herein, we report a case of extensive metastatic calcinosis cutis in an 18-year-old woman with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma with skeletal involvement. With combination therapy including radiation directed at her lymphoma and diltiazem, her lesions improved dramatically. This case demonstrates the previously unreported association between calcinosis cutis and Hodgkin lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP) is a rare disorder, and often presents to an orthopaedic surgeon as recurrent fractures, dislocations, pseudoarthrosis, osteomyelitis etc. Here, we report a case of congenital insensitivity to pain presenting with distal femoral physeal separation in a child.
CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old girl child came with complaints of limp while walking and swelling in the left knee for past 5 weeks. Mother gave a history that the girl is a known case of congenital insensitivity to pain with clear history of no pain on intramuscular injection since birth.

We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology in a 50-yr-old female who presented with a subcutaneous swelling near the left iliac crest. Cytological finding of amorphous calcium salts with histiocytes and the appropriate clinical background led to the cytodiagnosis of idiopathic calcinosis cutis as subsequently confirmed on histopathology. Pitfalls in the diagnosis of calcinosis cutis on cytology smears are also discussed.

Calcinosis cutis is a rare condition characterized by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Dystrophic calcinosis cutis appears as a result of local tissue damage or abnormalities, such as alterations in extra-cellular matrix proteins or subcutaneous tissue with normal calcium and phosphate serum levels. It has been rarely described as a late complication of burns. Latency periods of 15-54 years have been reported. We describe the case of a 57-year-old man with dystrophic calcinosis cutis in a burn scar, which developed 42 years after the skin injury. T…

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis is an uncommon condition characterized by calcium deposits in the dermis, subcutis, and muscles that most commonly are localized in one area. We report the rare case of a 16-year-old adolescent girl who exhibited unusually widespread calcium deposits. The laboratory results showed a normal biochemistry profile. Ultrasonography revealed calcifications in the fat tissue under the skin but not in deeper tissues or muscles. The histopathologic evaluation showed deep cutaneous and subcutaneous calcium deposits. Laboratory investigation revealed normal calcium, phosphate,…

Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy with characteristic cutaneous manifestations. We describe a case of a 55-year-old woman with dermatomyositis who presented with dystrophic calcinosis resistant to medical treatment.

Calcinosis cutis is common in several connective tissue diseases such as dermatomyositis, scleroderma or lupus erythematous. In dermatomyositis, it is more likely to concern children than adults but it is not exceptional in adults. Several treatments have been used empirically with inconsistent success. We report a case of adult cutis calcinosis associated with dermatomyositis which responded dramatically to treatment with diltiazem.

Calcinosis cutis, an uncommon disorder characterized by hydroxyapatite crystals of calcium phosphate deposited in the skin, has been described infrequently in childhood. Cutaneous calcification may be divided into four major categories: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, and iatrogenic. Here, we report an example of iatrogenic type with a 4-year-old boy who diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, and developed calcinosis cutis secondary to a tumour lysis syndrome with induction chemotherapy.

Calcinosis cutis, deposition of insoluble calcium salts in cutaneous tissues, is an uncommon disorder. This condition can be classified as metastatic, dystrophic, idiopathic, and iatrogenic based on the pathogenesis of the deposition. Whereas dystrophic calcinosis cutis is a fairly common condition, idiopathic cases are very rare. Distinct cutaneous anatomic areas, the vulva, scrotum, penis, and breast, have been reported to develop this disorder. Nevertheless, our case who had idiopathic calcinosis cutis in her neck may be a proof that this condition is not confined to genitals or the breasts…

Pillars of calcification are rarely found in the skin. An interesting case is described where rows of new bone developed in the skin which had been grafted 31 years previously to cover partial skin thickness burns of the shin. The problems of heterotropic ossification are discussed.

Recent surgical experience with 11 cases of calcinosis cutis has given the authors an opportunity to define the role of surgery in the management of this condition. In scleroderma associated with dermatomyositis, when complications or disability arise from one or more areas of calcinosis, surgery may give significant palliation. Wound healing, although a potential problem, does not constitute a contraindication to operative treatment. Damage to deep structures usually is avoidable, but in some instances is a reasonable trade-off for the benefits obtained. Follow-up has confirmed that surgery i…

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an immune-mediated myopathy characterized by proximal skeletal muscle weakness, muscle inflammation, and distinct skin manifestations. Calcinosis cutis, involving the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the soft tissues, affects approximately 8% of DM patients1 and poses significant treatment challenges. It can complicate with inflammation, ulceration, pain, and local and systemic infections, resulting in considerable morbidity. We present the case of a 69-year-old-woman with dermatomyositis who developed an exuberant form of calcinosis cutis.

Calcinosis cutis is a chronic condition involving skin and soft tissue deposition of calcium and phosphate. It is associated with several conditions including idiopathic, iatrogenic, malignant metastasis, calciphylaxis, and connective tissue diseases. The most common connective tissue diseases it is associated with include systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis. We present a case image of a patient with Sjogren's syndrome and calcinosis cutis and its progression over time. The patient was optimized on her current treatment regimen to prevent further progression. Written informed consent was ob…

Cutis calcinosis of the hand in the setting of symbrachydactyly is presented in 2 unique patients. Both lesions were treated based on the standard of care protocols with resection of the calcified mass and hand reconstruction, as appropriate. The patients healed uneventfully without recurrence of the calcification at a the 1-year follow-up. The association between symbrachydactyly and calcinosis cutis is discussed along with a hypothesis on the pathophysiologic mechanism that could potentially explain this unusual occurrence and why it might be more common than previously identified.
